It's a week of surprise turnarounds and unexpected outcomes. First up: Has Sony flown too close to the sun? In trying to halt Microsoft's acquisition of Activision, it may have exposed itself to critical governmental and social scrutiny it would have otherwise never garnered. And the deal's probably going to go through anyway. Meanwhile, reporting indicates PSVR2 is bombing in its first month on the market, which our eyes and ears were already telling us. Plus: E3 is cancelled (probably forever) after the promise of a triumphant comeback, The Last of Us: Part I on PC wildly misses the Naughty Dog bar of quality, once-accused games writer Chris Avellone clears his name, and more news rounds our upside-down episode, dotted as always with listener inquiries. Your topics this week? The potential of animated PlayStation TV series and films, the best third-party publisher ever, a defense of day one DLC, and much more.

Sacred Friday... I mean, Symbols. Thank you for the episode.

https://twitter.com/DealKoopa/status/1639333655959961633?t=H5PEpXnpCe0_kpUx0XSY6Q&s=19 This guy said the exact same thing about Suckerpunch and the TMNT game. I doubt Sony would do it, but I'd bet they'd make a fun TMNT game. But yeah, it'll probably be some AA studio. Which could still work out

Some additional info on Geno Samuel to continue on a question Colin had... he is working on other stuff! He streams every now and then to discuss his work and has apparently been working on a several hour long documentary on the Terra Nova Expedition to the antarctic. I recall he nearly quit doing CC videos for a while due to the severe mental damage of covering that subject so intimately (this was even prior to the jail saga), so it's a good sign he's dedicating some energy to something completely separate.

I didn’t buy PSVR because it’s just something that isn’t super important to purchase at this moment. I have my own sole proprietorship and I have seen 25% less retail clients since November of 2022. I’m not struggling by any means but VR is just an expense that I am not willing make at the moment. I’d rather buy collectibles and games. Plus I have my first 7-8 months of games lined up with a huge backlog as well. I am usually a day one adopter for these things but I’m holding out for a potential “Switch 2” coming out possibly this fall or early next year. I’ll get one eventually though.

MGS3 is my favorite Metal Gear game but I want a remake of 1 way more. But I’ll be stoked if this rumor is true and it turns out well. Frankly I just really want to be able to play the whole series on PS5, already!

GOWR Spoilers potentially to answer what that actor was saying but I’ll try not say anything too big… When you last see Tyr in the game he is making poses in all the realms. They said his poses were hints to GOW future. Tyr in the story was said to be well travelled. I think that when they finally make a new game in a new place he may be an npc traveling the world again after being free so he may just pop up.

Bogey Zero

An Easy Allies x LSM collaboration would be amazing. My two favorite gaming podcasts.

The one thing about COD on ps+ I doubt Microsoft meant they could put it on for nothing. I imagine Microsoft would want a fat check in order for sony to do that. So it's not just loosing sales revenue, it's what they'd have to pay to get it on plus.

Zack E

I literally have no idea what you guys are talking about or who Chris Chan is, besides just now what Dustin explained. And I’m going to just keep it that way lol

Bryant

Thank you for discussing the Chris Avellone situation! I would like to see him help Mundfish out with Atomic Heart 2, and fix that studio’s biggest problem.

Angel DeJesus

I'll say it again, it doesn't help psvr 2 that it's not available in stores. People are walking out of retailers with a ps5, and there is no indication in these stores that psvr2 exist. Glad Dustin mentioned this. And if stores don't want it cuz it's not selling, then sony screwed up by not having them available from the start.

Napoleon in Rags

Another great video game sound: smashing a pile of crates and collecting all the bolts and nuts in Ratchet and Clank

In regards to Resi 4 I didn't mind the knife durability too much because it's op to parry everything. But I was expecting a stronger or permanent knife at the end. Crafting was great because it gave you so much choice in what you use. It also creates fun scenarios where its like "do I want pistol ammo now cos I need it or wait and try and craft shotgun or rifle ammo" for me it worked and I loved it

Kenneth Koepnick

FWIW- I met Yuri Lowenthal over the weekend at a convention. He says he doesn’t know where Tony Todd got that info from, cuz he hasn’t heard anything yet. But that his work on the game has been done for a bit. Also said he didn’t do work for spiderverse.

Walker Simmons

A VR Death Stranding mode would be awesome. I'd love to just explore the landscapes while listening to the haunting soundtrack in first person

Stonehorn

Lol it’s worth nothing. Of course he’d say what they told him to say.

Regarding my day one DLC write-in, Colin didn't quite convince me to agree with him but I definitely understand and can see his point more now

Tom Gentry

I’m listening to your segment about the hybrid flatscreen/VR titles, and I cannot help but think it makes the most sense that the Insomniac Wolverine game will be a VR title. We know that Insomniac has made great VR titles before and it wouldn’t make sense to split up their first team studio between Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine. I would love to hear your thoughts on this in the next episode

Brogan Trull

As a long time Easy Allies sub (still do along with Sacred Symbols) your comments are spot on IMO. It is natural to expect a decline, especially with three big hits from Brandon, Ben, and Kyle no longer there. Those days when they were all there were special; still have a good core overall but it is definitely different and will take time to grow again if it does. Love what you guys are doing at Sacred Symbols.

hugplx

As much as I hate Genshin now (as a former whale), I'll say that if you're just interested in the new game's story, you should absolutely be able to do that without ever interacting with the cash shop. Just like you could in Genshin. As long as you're able to ignore the allure of waifus and 'end game' grinds, which, as much as I hate them now, is totally doable. The story was actually the best part of Genshin, and the dialogue very funny.

Zander

Is some able to help me find the The Last of Us Part 2 poster mentioned in the final inquiry? Made by Jay Kantu? Is it public ally available?

James Hill

There is no way Chris-Chan is more documented than Jesus. Unless...

Nulsums

PSVR1 sold half in the same time as PSVR2. The Bloomberg guy, is a Nintendo Fanboy.

Luke Silletta

Having Jeff Gerstmann on SS+ would be amazing. I was a die hard Giant Bomb fan for many many years. Until they became just like the other outlets. I remember when they lost me it was when that Guild Wars 2 writer got fired and they had a really stupid take on it that was my last straw. Until I found you Colin when I heard you on Rogan. Now I've been here.

NeO JD

Col, I love Saint’s Row, and even I’m telling you DO NOT waste your time with the new one. The gameplay is eh, but the writing is some of the worst I’ve ever heard. You’re better off replaying Saint’s Row 2.

TheSissyOfFremont

I am still hugely enamoured with the idea of a AAA Castlevania game from Santa Monica.

lazer_josh

Wow the car accident thing happened to me in January. Same thing. Glasses and phone flew off. Head on collision. Sacred symbols blaring as I almost died.

Noah Friscopp

Something IS mucked up about RE4’s sound in headphones, what is up with that?

Kid-Organic

Perhaps one of the major components to your bump in YT numbers may be the fact that PS5 is now, finally, widely available and they’re has been a string of AAA games for it.

Bailey Callis

Completely, disagree with Colin, to my eye, resident evil looks much better and higher budget than deadspace. And the audio was creepy as hell and of such high quality.

Danfromumbrella

I mean who cares about that when RE4 has far more variety in terms of location and gameplay. Dead Space as far as I know doesn't have 15 enemies on screen at once. It's a much bigger game with much more going on.

Katana Silver

RE4 Remake sounds distant and echoey with headphones and 3D audio, same as the past two remakes

Jeremy Seal

Collin, Sea of Stars comes out on August 29th.

Kyle

I bought my psvr2 at Walmart. Totally spur of the moment. Could’ve got it on Amazon, but once I had a box in my hand it was easier to swipe the visa. This was Canada fwiw

Greg Hommel

I think I’m a good barometer for the PSVR2. I spend a lot of money on Sony products, I bought a PSVR on day one, I already had the Move and all accessories, I’m the guy they want to sell to. The PSVR2 is about $100 to $150 too expensive for me to drop on it without more software. The software for the PSVR was serviceable but more of the same is not going to cut it for me. I want to see more traditional types of games like GT7 and Resident Evil.

Christopher Puckett

I think it's pretty obvious that Tyr's voice actor is alluding to the next game in the series. I doubt that Sony Santa Monica would make DLC for Ragnarok, seeing as how they've already said that they're not, and none of the previous God Of War games hade any major DLC. Cory Barlog said that Ragnarok was "the end of the Norse Saga", I would expect that the next GOW game will have Tyr and Kratos traveling to other mythology's.
