Trap Card | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast, Episode 248

It's a week of surprise turnarounds and unexpected outcomes. First up: Has Sony flown too close to the sun? In trying to halt Microsoft's acquisition of Activision, it may have exposed itself to critical governmental and social scrutiny it would have otherwise never garnered. And the deal's probably going to go through anyway. Meanwhile, reporting indicates PSVR2 is bombing in its first month on the market, which our eyes and ears were already telling us. Plus: E3 is cancelled (probably forever) after the promise of a triumphant comeback, The Last of Us: Part I on PC wildly misses the Naughty Dog bar of quality, once-accused games writer Chris Avellone clears his name, and more news rounds our upside-down episode, dotted as always with listener inquiries. Your topics this week? The potential of animated PlayStation TV series and films, the best third-party publisher ever, a defense of day one DLC, and much more. Who knew my beloved Buffalo Sabres would come up briefly on todays show 😨

Samuel

Hello guys, great episode so far - I think Ben’s (Tyr) comments are likely alluding to a miles morales like game with Atreus in the next year or so from Cory B

Ben Strauss

Hey guys, the psvr 2 is failing for all that you stated, but you left a big thing out. People do no care about VR. It is a VERY small minority of gamers. Most people are just not interested in wearing them and the games are really just tech demos. No VR sales have ever been big and it's just been a dwindling market for years now. It was a bad move to invest further into it.

Anonymous

Jesus. The thumbnail making skills are on point today

Anonymous

When you are making statements in absolutes like "most people" do not care VR. Do also provide the data. The way you feel about VR being unnecessary is we exactly how some people it being necessary.

Zack Apuzzo

Greatest thumbnail yet

Sumojoe118

Outside of United States you can buy PSVR2 at any retailer, in Canada I got it at Walmart and Best Buy sells them as well. I assume US is the biggest market though so strange they haven't made it available elsewhere.

Pyo

ok that thumbnail is the best one so far LMAO

@Colin: in relation to that car crash story. That was years ago but in one episode you guys were talking about listening to Sacred Symbols on your deathbed in hospice for everyone to hear. And you said something like: Forget speaking to your relatives during your last seconds. I want you guys to listen to Sacred Symbols 78. - obviously, you were just throwing a random number out there but funnily enough that episode is called "The Witching Hour".

ToiletDrummer

As a former long time Easy Allies Patron who came over to LSM when Ben Moore left, it is fascinating listening to you guys talk about their decline. I'd love a collaboration but can absolutely see why this might be difficult (and it's a damn shame tbh) Well, maybe we'll see Brad and/or Huber eventually cause I think these two would be down for it. Oh and imo Colin is spot on with his assessment that "sounding the same" does play a critical role in listener retention or lets say the lack thereof.

Sindri

Huber and Brad are the two that make me watch anything from EZA. Nothing against the rest of the cast, but they just don't really interest me. Huber's perhaps the most enthusiastic person I've ever heard speak. It's infectious

Sindri

Colin, Ben Hanson from Minnmaxx is the secret weapon over there, in my opinion. I listened to the Game Informer podcast for years when he was the host, and he comes across like just a genuinely upbeat, friendly person. I was a Minnmaxx patron during Covid and ended up quitting my sub to come over here to LSM

Ben Haner

Y’all need to be playing RE4 without headphones, the sound coming out of the duelsense is awesome! And the adaptive triggers/haptics really make it stand out on the ps5, IMO

Zack E

That avatar is FPS in of itself isn’t news. It was known that it would be FPS, and in fact there is first person views in the trailer they released months ago.

Just want to comment positively on the sponsor AG1 or whatever. I don't use this supplement, but Colin made a comment about diet possibly being more important than a lot of other things. It's true that with enough exercise, you can last a lot longer even with a bad diet. What's also true is that eventually, with bad input, all bodies and minds will start to see negative consequences. If you only get little exercise, you really need to at least have your diet under control, Diet is WAY overlooked in healthcare, even for mental health. It is humongous. You are rebuilding your body/mind and fueling it on what you put into it. Think about that. I swear I'm not a health nut.

I'm aware of the origin of PlayStation with Nintendo but I'm curious after this ABK acquisition about a possible partnership of some kind. How viable would it be for Sony not to buy but possibly invest a large sum of money into Nintendo? Especially if they did aquire Square, would it not be in their interest to form some kind of relationship with Nintendo? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Pyo

Also for the psvr2, in the us it's 550-600, in some other places like where I am it's 750-800 euros (with no horizon and with horizon). It's just too much considering the lack of games, excitement and games coming

Cai

Hope Chris has time to relax and play some RE4! Situation sucks 👎

Anonymous

I'm not a fan of durability in games. I'm probably one of the few who don't enjoy Breath of the Wild with that being one of my biggest gripes with it. It makes sense in some games such as in RE4 Remake and it's just one weapon....one really good one.

easelgames

thumbnail wise, the monsters with effects are actually the orange/dark brown colored ones lol. The tan ones don't come with effects, just fyi if you care

Dennis Fox

If they are real I'm buying those Metal Gear remakes day one, I have zero shame.

Gooch Gobbler

man the amount the characters pant in RE4 is ridiculous. Also I remembered loving the merchant but he will NOT shut up. I literally mute the game when I go to the shop. Only thing I don't like about the game though! Plan to finish it up tonight.

RU46N2 (REY)

Dam Collin get out of my head first dredg then vector man reference and now you are the only one that has mention remaking RE 0. One of my faves from the Game Cube era. Dam this is why I am a Patreon subscriber Kick Ass content by host that Kick Ass. Keep up the the great work fellas.

Gooch Gobbler

I would totally be down for more day one DLC or "first 3 months" DLC. Who cares as long as the main game is beefy? That's how DLC is developed anyway most of the time. Multiple seasons of shows or movies are filmed at the same time. Multiple books are written at the same time. Don't understand how it is that different

RU46N2 (REY)

Correction Colin: there were 2 other games one being a psvr Rick and Morty game. And another games called trover saves the universe which could be played in VR and as a standard non VR game.

Germanos

Then you haven't been around the PS3 era when every DLC was considered "cut content" and the harassment campaigns when the developer decided to advertise it before the release. Not gonna happen. People are dumb.

Keith Huntington

i need to issue a quick stand down. dead space is fantastic, resident evil 4 deserves its accolades. but every time either of these games come up on sacred, that's always the end of the conversation. just those 2 games discussed as a duo. is anyone at sacred a fan of silent hill 2? because the general consensus is there's a holy trinity of survivor horror, dead space, re4, and sh2. you cant have one without the other two. they are forever linked and tied together as amazing masterpieces for pushing the genre forward. if i had to choose one, it's sh2 all day, every day, and twice in sunday's. that being said, it's time you boys break out your ps2s and give silent hill 2 some love ahead of the possibly botched remake 😄

Gooch Gobbler

Yeah I was around but idk if I even agreed back then as a broke teenager that it was a money grab. Certain things were though like one mission dlcs or things of that nature

Honestly, if you want games with Chinese Culture, the best place to go is Taiwanese made games. The CCP during the cultural revolution basically annihilated their history, destroying books, statues, architecture, etc from before their rule, and replaced it with USSR culture as far as possible. You pretty much have to get Chinese Culture second-hand at this point, Japan, and Korea have more old Chinese influence in their culture than the CCP does. Taiwan is the only place that fully kept the history and culture of China going. What old chinese culture that mainland china still has is largely what they've re-imported from those other 3 countries, then copied. There's at least one series set in historic China from Taiwan, Xuan-Yuan Sword series. There's a few others that were co-developed by Taiwanese and Chinese companies using Taiwanese IP (Sword and Fairy.)

Eebo85

Gents, I just wanted to give you guys a big THANK YOU! I am nuclear power worker, currently working a 3 week outage straight to manage and oversee the refueling of our reactor. The shows are just a joy and honestly my own fuel to keep me going as I travel back and forth. Much love and appreciation to everyone at LSM!

Christopher Puckett

I think it's pretty obvious that Tyr's voice actor is alluding to the next game in the series. I doubt that Sony Santa Monica would make DLC for Ragnarok, seeing as how they've already said that they're not, and none of the previous God Of War games hade any major DLC. Cory Barlog said that Ragnarok was "the end of the Norse Saga", I would expect that the next GOW game will have Tyr and Kratos traveling to other mythology's.
