Lights Out | Sacred Symbols, Episode 244

As you well-know, Sacred Symbols doesn't work with any publishers, developers, or manufacturers. As such, we're excited to talk about PSVR2 for the very first time now that we've gotten our own purchased units in the mail. We go into some of our varying experiences so far, particularly with Horizon: Call of the Mountain, and Colin in particular wonders if his unit is broken or just permanently blurry ('sweet spot' be damned). We also get into all of the week's news, of course, starting with IO Interactive's big reveal of a new fantasy RPG in the works, Elden Ring's mysterious upcoming DLC, the closure of Square Enix's Luminous Productions, and more. As usual, listener inquiries round things out for us on topics like 3D platformers, endemic industry negativity, the potentially offensive nature of the term 'JRPG', and one funny anecdote from our live show in Houston about a few mystified men who thought they were there to see Moulin Rouge. Would be awesome to see another Sacred Symbols Plus episode with Bryan from Psvr2 without Parol soon after the dust has settled from psvr2 launch.

Next time Vegas please and may record some episodes in Vegas. Maybe smaller episodes. Konami is out there. And the best part you kick back and take in the city.

Chris is back. Balance has been restored!

Gotham Knights did not make the top ten for 2022 in either NPD sales or PSN downloads. I don’t think it will well at all.

Dustin has been asking for a VR title in PS Plus in this episode. Good news: Walking Dead Saints & Sinners will be getting a free upgrade for the PS Plus version that went into the service last year (?). So if you've claimed it, there's a free upgrade for a great game.

@Colin - You may want to check out a couple of other games on PSVR2 to see if what you're experiencing in Horizon is you, the headset, or the game. I haven't actually played Horizon yet, but everything that I have played looks fantastic. That Kayak game is beautiful. The standout for me as an experience overall, however, is Thumper. I played it on PSVR1 and on flat-screen. PSVR2 is a whole different level of awesome.

Colin I had the exact same trajectory with the PSVR2. Day 1 I was fully enamored. Day 2 I started to question blurriness, and couldn't get things to come into full focus. Day 2 though I was using my glasses. I threw in contacts for Day 3, and had a really clear experience again! I'm just curious - I think you mentioned being somewhat nearsighted in the Discord - do you own contact lenses? I really believe that, even if your prescription is slight, it could make a difference given how close the lenses are to your eyes!

Salt and pepper pistachios really are the best Colin. It’s good they’re in shells or I’d be 500 pounds

Hey Colin, the Zelensky quote you heard was clipped and taken out of context. He basically suggested if they lose and Russia ends up attacking a NATO country that we would indeed need to go to war which is true. It's unlikely and he's obviously politicking to get maximum support but not the same as NATO getting into the war right now.

Colin I'm pretty sure the blurriness you see in vr is normal and just a limitation of the technology in its current state. It's always gonna look just one notch below being crystal clear. Its kind of unfortunate because of how expensive it is but it's significantly better than the original psvr which looked a lot worse if you remember. As for the boundaries you can actually adjust it to be any size you want and ignore any objects in your room.

William Aguilar

@Colin to make VR less blurry the headset needs to be higher above your eyes then you might expect to find the sweet spot. Adjust the VR so it's a little higher and it'll look perfect

It's time!!!

Stop. Saying. Almonds.

I feel like you guys were being really obtuse about the term JRPG. The answer to what FF6 and Chrono Trigger are.. is turn based RPGs or call FF6 an ATB game if you want to be specific. The fact that Dark Souls isnt considered a jrpg when jrpgs are already diverse shows how stupid the term is to begin with and that Yoshi P is right when its used to put them in a box. Just because it was used in the early days of games in a specific way doesnt mean it needs to remain. Its like the argument about the term Adventure game.... no one cares that it was originally used to describe point and click games, we can move on.

TheSissyOfFremont

JRPG doesn’t just imply turn based though, most CRPG’s are turn based but clearly not of the same mould as JRPG’s.

Hey Colin, with the release of PSVR2, I hope that within the next few months you'll organise to perhaps get Bryan back on from PSVR Without Parole for some in depth discussions around PSVR2. There are 8 demos / trials available on the PS store which you should check out. And I hope more devs release more demos for PSVR2. For your blurriness issues, like others have suggested above, you might need to adjust your headset and the way it sits on your head. For me personally, probably due to the shape of my small head, when I did the eye adjustment in the PSVR settings and set my eyes to be in the blue circles, when I am in the game, like Horizon, I still feel that I need to adjust it slightly, and I usually lift the headset slightly higher up on my forehead by a few millimeters, to find that sweet spot. Once I do, everything is super clear, and no more blurriness. So just adjust your headset a bit more, once you are in the game. But check out both PSVR Without Parole's and MysticRyan's videos about PSVR2 and settings and blurriness, they go into depth about the PSVR2. If you still experiencing blurriness, then get your eyes checked at the optomotrist. I wear glasses, and if I do not wear glasses in VR, then everything is blurry. I need glasses for VR. Hope you find that sweet spot. Unfortunately it's very small, compared to PSVR1. Good Luck.

Small correction on Beyond Good and Evil 2. The 2nd trailer with the monkey was 2016. The original announcement teaser trailer dates all the way back to 2008. Yes 2008!

Man Atomic Heart is tragic. I could get over the terrible main character but the platforming is INFURIATING. Then I got a bug in the tube puzzle where I couldnt move the ball so just said fuck it, I'm done

I think the blur Colin describes when looking at close objects in PSVR2 is the vergence-accommodation conflict. I've read that your brain has to get used to it, and I think that's true, because after two weeks of using the headset, I'm preeeetty sure everything is less blurry than before, like the hands in Horizon. So, don't give up just yet, I guess.

Keith Huntington

cashews and almonds are fine, but im going to have to issue a stand down on the ranking and an outright snub. brazil nuts will always be superior to all other nuts. the sweetness. the crunch. the size. very filling.

Keith Huntington

re: ps3. so starting a few weeks ago i've been revisiting the fromsoft games on ps3. and i was playing dark souls 1 the other day and low and behold there was a random player who had a summon sign down on the sanctuary floor of the chapel before the gargoyles. i summoned him in for fun. we both took down the gargoyles. there was also another player who had a sign down before the caprademon fight. and thirdly, i got invaded by another player. i was quite surprised that there was any online activity. but i guess if i'm playing, it stands to reason others would be as well.

mrigamer

Colin you don’t need to buy an additional game for PSVR if you want to just check the blurriness issue. There are about 10 psvr 2 demos on the PlayStation Store. Also definitely watch Bryan’s from Without Paroles video on finding the sweet spot on the headset.

LastStandMedia

Yeah, we'd like to get him back on. I'm not trying to be rude to you or others, but: I'm not an idiot, I know how to wear a headset and try to make it work. It could be a setting, but there's no way I'm wearing it wrong. My vision is near-perfect.

Gooch Gobbler

Just such a shame because the world and enemies are so damn cool. I love the way you gather resources too

Sam Dunham

You do NOT want to know what my grandmother called Brazil Nuts. Let's just say she was a product of her times in some ways.

Suicide Squad looks like that one Crackdown game with Terry Crews. It’s a big departure overall. Won’t be purchasing myself.

Kaz Redclaw

I think the difference between Roguelike and Roguelite depends on what elements they take from the rogue design. If it's just Permadeath with some amount of carryover, then it's probably more of a roguelite. If it keeps the turn based top-down map elements then it's more of a roguelike.

Dylan Neves

I'm probably some sort of hybrid between the listener, Colin, and Dustin in that I try to play only one game at a time to fully immerse myself within it. For some reason, playing multiple games simultaneously just feels distracting. I'd like to give all of my attention to one game to fully appreciate it as much as I can. I'm pretty picky with my games nowadays, so it's rare for games to come out around the same time. But if they do, then I will probably feel out both games and play the one that I am enjoying more, and put the other one in the "background list" until I beat the game I'm currently playing. That way when I get back to the other game, I'm not too far and there's nothing lost in continuing or starting over. I keep the background list small and it's different from the backlog of games I haven't started or barely played. Speaking of this topic... Did Chris leave behind FF7 Remake again lol? I forgot about that.
