Truth be told, we (The Brothers Moriarty) went into The Cabin in the Woods totally blind. Unlike our other romps through horror fare this October, we've both never seen this film... at least until preparing to record this episode. While controversial in nature -- it is, after all, a Joss Whedon joint -- The Cabin in the Woods happens to be a well-respected horror film for one specific reason: It's really good. Turning the genre on its head, poking fun at its archetypes and tropes, and even laying a greater groundwork for the actual meaning behind horror itself, Cabin in the Woods is a clever and thought-provoking flick, and we're thrilled to give it its due here on KnockBack. So listen, before we bind you with ancient logics.

When my friends and I watched this on Blu Ray back in 2012 we thought it was just a slasher as well. We would always just pick random horror movies and hope for the best. With horror sometimes the worst ones are the best ones. I remember we all jumped when the title card popped up and were struggling with the tone of the movie.... And then when the dirtbiker drove into that wall we were like, "WTF IS THIS?" So damn good. It would be hard to pull the off, but a well excuted sequel in which you find out the underworld is also just a giant bureaucracy would be pretty fantastic lol.

"Who gave you these? Who taught you about these?" "I learned it from you!" I learned it from watching you!" 😂🤣 Great horror joint.

By outside looking in Colin seems like an amazing boss, but I did imagine him dressed up as Scrooge as he said this 😂

I had a very similar experience, except I was looking for a horror flick with a serious tone, so this movie threw my night off. That being said the dirt bike scene made me laugh so hard that i think about that moment once a month since that night.

What's so fantastic is when drying into the woods there is a bird in the foreground that dies by hitting the wall. Easy to miss, but great telgraphing. It's definitely a movie the rewards subsequent playthroughs.

Colin I have to say I expected you push back a bit more during the Whedon reputation part of the episode. There are a handful of he said/she saids about him being hard to work with and it's true he was a serial adulterer, but you guys are talking about him in the same breath as paedophiles! The vast majority of his actors to this day talk about his shows being the best environments they ever worked in, here's one from two years ago with Morena Baccarin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcYiYtOMtdU&ab_channel=EntertainmentWeekly

It's as I said: I really don't know the ins and outs. And we made it clear several times that what he's accused of is totally different. We literally lay out the spectrum near the end.

That is true, I was only halfway through the episode when I wrote the message. One thing to point out though: you wondered if his behaviour was due to an overinflated ego from having worked on these shows, when only one of the allegations are about his behavour in the last twenty years (the Ray Fisher one, which got laughed out of Hollywood). I think it's probably more along the lines of his work at the time getting constantly mocked for being quippy and forcing strong female characters on the audience, which later on was what got him the recognition he craved and he mellowed out.

Colin, have you checked out Alice in Borderland? It has that same Squid Game/Hunger Games feel and the second season should be here before the end of the year.
