London Calling | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 226

For two decades, Sony's London Studio has been known almost exclusively for its casual fare, usually driven by a peripheral, whether it's a camera, microphone, or even Move. But a recent conversation the team's two co-leads conducted with an industry publication indicates definitively that recent rumors were true: London Studio is pursuing a more hardcore course, specifically with an online co-op game-as-a-service that's set in a fantasy-themed London. (How fitting.) Is PlayStation's most inconsequential team about to run up the pecking order as part of a new, multiplayer-centered initiative? We discuss. Other news this week includes the construction of a new first party team allied closely with Naughty Dog, confirmation of an Unreal Engine 5-run Witcher remake from CD Projekt, the exit of studio Rocksteady's talented co-founders, the potential return of Square Enix's Parasite Eve, and more. Then: Listener inquiries. Will AAA PSVR2 games cost $70, too? How can we get back to the three year dev cycle? Did patching ruin game launches forevermore? Does Dustin know what "Oingo Boingo" means? If you’re interested in ever doing a full episode on extremism in these communities, I recommend reaching out to the guys at Qanon Anonymous Podcast. They’re some of the foremost experts on Qanon and have been covering it since before it was ever reported on by the mainstream media or had entered the public conversation. Extremism, echo chambers (in and out of gaming/conservative and liberal,) and the toxicity of the internet and its effect on our social climate are their focus. I don’t know if they’d be interested in coming on for an episode of +, but perhaps they would be. Here’s a link to an episode from earlier this year if you’re intrigued. Better yet- Dale Beran, co author of this episode, and author of It Came From Something Awful, would be a good person to reach out to. Gamergate is a major area of his expertise, as the history of the Chan boards is his “thing.” https://open.spotify.com/episode/1oVhLTWu74gMFOaAy1qRv6?si=VoAhH3RxQKSBkEToaKNK6g

You should look into that USA trying to buy Greenland thing because it’s very interesting, basically in the next 20 years a new trade route that is thousands of miles shorter then going for the Panama Canal will open up there and if the United States owned Greenland than they would own both ports of Entry to it and would be able to tax it from both sides bringing in crazy amounts of money, it’s also a strategic location so we will invade it if we ever go to war with Europe to prevent them from invading from our weaker northern border

I don't remember you guys mentioning the $700k awarded to Middlebury's CTEC and Take This back in September. While some aspects of their research goals seem harmless, I'm not enthusiastic about this budding relationship between a counterterrorism group and game studios. Of course studios have the right to implement tools that monitor and detect potential extremist activity. But I can't help but wonder what that looks like in practice and be concerned.

Under 4 hours. L Episode. Just kidding fellas, great work as always.

If I may, and this comes with the utmost respect and love: I would appreciate that you guys do a little more research on some of these news items, before discussing them on the show. And maybe you do, and you prioritize some segments more than others, but for the Japanese ban of that one game: there were a lot of questions being posited, that I the viewer now have etched in my mind, that I'd need to research to get answers to. Like if the same ratings board is responsible for anime that is responsible for video games in Japan, etc. And I understand that you cannot research everything before hand, but I thought I'd share this, this one time.

LastStandMedia

It's funny, I looked at the timer when we segued to listener questions, and we were barely at three hours. I thought we'd go way shorter than we did!

LastStandMedia

I appreciate your feedback; we do the best we can. I cannot know everything about everything, and I spend many hours preparing the show, so I'm not sure how much more of a time commitment you'd like from me.

Hire or contract an assistant or part time researcher or editor. Like many other growing business and media companies are doing.

Think Microsoft is ready to strike on Rocksteady / WB Games soon as the Activision deal is done.

Ummm regarding replacing Queen on the bills. In Canada, Queen is also in our paper bills. So they have to be changed too I'd presume. I like the idea of putting in someone dead or better yet let's all agree n put the iconic Mr Bean on the new bills. I think Canada will be happy with him on our paper bills and so will the people of UK and any other country that has her on it. 🤣

I checked with a few people too, NPD doesn't count direct bundle sales like horizon has. So that #5 spot is without bundles, how it counts is the total dollar sales for the PS5. So it adds the 550 bundle to the overall dollar sales for PS5 console but that doesn't count for horizon itself as a game

"I before E, except after C" - - there are more words in the English language where this rule is not true, than there are words for which it is true. Our teachers lied to us. An exception to a rule is fine, but when exceptions exceed non exceptions, the rule fails.

That’s cool man just wanted to plug some good researchers

Danny Elfman actually scored the Fable franchise, Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissor Hands, Beetlejuice and the Tim Burton Batman movies which were all known for their incredible scores. On top of that he also composed the theme songs for The Simpsons, Tales from the Crypt, Batman: The animated series and Desperate House Wives. Needles to say the dude is a beast. I really hope they bring him back for the new Fable reboot.

Great episode guys. The Witcher is the best Rpg out of the 3 of them and I can't wait for the remake. Geralt is represented much closer to his book description in The Witcher compared to the sequels. He's meant to be a mutant, scarred and monstrous.

So, the PS5 availability is getting worse and worse here in Europe. I have checked the price for PS5 digital edition. And the cheapest you can get here in central Europe is 729€. MSRP is of cause 450€. And they are generaly available only for pre-order and not in stock. https://herne-konzoly.heureka.sk/sony-playstation-5-digital-edition/#prehlad/ Just saying.

Not really. As Cog experienced himself lately. He could not use his Series S in Ireland, because we have 220-230Volt power grid. So me and my kids are still on PS4 pro and I have spent my saved money on Xbox. To have a current gen HW. And I am slowly upgrading one of my son's gaming PCs. AFAIK, PS5 is just an Urban Legend.
