This Is Fortnite's World (We're Just Living In it) | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 217

Fortnite, Fortnite, Fortnite. Frankly, I (Colin) am tired of hearing the name. But alas, my feelings have struck headlong into reality, because Fortnite is one of the most popular games of all-time, and it demands at least some of my attention. And yours, too. Here's the rub: Fortnite attracts more than four million concurrent players a day, with more than 80 million unique players a month. That 80 million players is eight times The Last of Us: Part II's cumulative sales, perhaps the most AAA single-player game ever launched on a PlayStation platform. And it took two years to reach that number. So just imagine the reach of Fortnite, the amount of money it makes, and the commercial, cultural, and social gravity it can deploy. To talk about the game -- its origins, its lure, its present and future -- I invited Kazden Risk to the show, who is nearing 2,000 hours played. Forget about a money printer. Fortnite prints billions and billions and billions and billions...

Mentioned this on the audio-only post, but thanks for having me on! Was a blast and dream come true as a long time listener. Hope people enjoy the show (despite it being Fartnite), ha!

FWIW - I'm a pretty jaded person when it comes to Marvel, Star Wars, and other things. Me and some buddies hopped on Fortnite last night and played the No Build Battle Royale mode and just had a lot of stupid fun with how ridiculous and whacky the game is. Adding the no build mode as a permanent option was one of the best things they've ever done to that game.

Fortnite is a fun clusterfuck of IP but I just don't enjoy the actual shooting that much. Anybody agree or do people consider this to be the best battle royale gameplay?

JoshM

I'm glad that Colin now sees the reason why I have such a problem with the insane cost of MTX in games lol Cool episode though - interesting to hear these different conversations on various games!

I agree that the shooting is not great. I play Apex Legends. The shooting is fantastic as its made by respawn who are excellent shooter devs.

Colin I love u man but solid snake is my main in smash & he absolutely belongs there. MGS does have a very important legacy on Nintendo despite it being a PlayStation-centric series. Twin Snakes was exactly what I want from a remake - it wasn’t as good as the original but it wasn’t trying to be the original. I think it was very big of Kojima to endorse & encourage another director to put his own flavor on the game. Also, the Snake Eater 3DS port is criminally underrated, it’s genuinely my favorite place to play the game (although the peripheral with the extra stick is a necessity). Snake is an S-tier smash fighter “full stop” (Colin Moriarty voice)

There are actually some creative maps that focus on parkour or other gameplay elements and since the game's mobility can feel so fluid they may be worth checking out! I did a deathrun thing and it was a bit of fun. I stick with Battle Royale but Creative has a LOT to offer.

Downloaded Fortnite for the 1st time in at least 2 years for the new Dragonball event and I can't lie ...it's really fun. It's no wonder it's stayed so successful and lucrative. To think back to what epic was just merely 5 years compared to now. One wonders what Epic will be in another 5 years. Especially with the continued migration of studios going to Unreal Engine.

One thing I am surprised he didn’t touch on was the music aspect of FortNite. Having major labels sign off on getting songs from Drake, Dua Lipa, BTS, and Halsey in the game and as emotes is a huge cultural significance to the game as well. The fact that FortNite emotes are known across generations of people and even non gamers is what cements the game as the most cultural significant one in video game history. And that doesn’t even look at the future where FortNite is really the first use test case of a Metaverse. Where you could play a competitive shooter, chill and listen to a live concert or the coop/fort building all in one universe. Loved the episode!

They are working on a Creative Mode 2.0, will release this year and allow for a lot more creative control for people that make levels, game modes, etc. I think that will change it even more into this online platform similar to Minecraft and what I imagined Dreams wanted to have.

I've actually attended a lot of the concerts in the game, from the big events (Travis Scott, Ariana Grande, Marshemello) to some more small-scale experiences they have in Creative Lobbies. It is wild, bummed we didn't talk about that more. To be honest there was a lot we didn't get to!

I'm so glad that someone wrote in about the NPC walking/running speed thing. I was literally (in the proper, strictest definition of the word) going to write in the same exact question for next week's episode. I think it was Stray that I was playing the other night that was the straw that broke the camel's back. IIRC, The Witcher 3 has the NPCs match the pace of the player. And something else I played recently. But in 90%+ of games, there's an annoying speed difference between the player and the NPCs that you're required to walk/run with.

Kyle Fox

Guys, we did it, we're in Fortnite...

Kyle Fox

I'll get started on that Colin Moriarty skin, boss!

Tyler Bello

Colin said the word maplestory lol threw me for a bit I've got thousands of hours into it but most people don't know it exists. Surprised at you Colin lol

Joe Piervincenti

Colin, I got a kick out of the fact that you thought Epic made billions of dollars a year off skins that cost a dollar or two 😂 But joking aside, Colin, FFXIV is absolutely the MMO that would be best suited for a primarily single player focused gamer. Best FF story in ages and you very rarely need to group with people if you choose not to. Elder Scrolls Online even more so, but that’s not a franchise you care about :)

LastStandMedia

It's not that unbelievable. I thought people were buying lots of different skins, accessories, etc. for a buck or two each. It's much, much sadder and more grave that they are making their money this way.

easelgames

The main knock against FFXIV is actually that co-op is a terrible experience, so it's not surprising that single player for it is awesome. Also you'd have to get through the ARR (realm reborn) content which is a SLOOG and like 140+ hours of tedious before you get to the expansions where the story and content really excels. It's one of those "it gets good later" situations.

JusticeSoulTuna

I think it's easy to see why kids (and adults too, but still) love this because it's a dream come true, basically an impossible game. Seeing all your favourite game, anime and comic book characters in a 100 player survival shooter is unbelievable. So the appeal of Fornite only grows in value with each new guest character.
