Fortnite, Fortnite, Fortnite. Frankly, I (Colin) am tired of hearing the name. But alas, my feelings have struck headlong into reality, because Fortnite is one of the most popular games of all-time, and it demands at least some of my attention. And yours, too. Here's the rub: Fortnite attracts more than four million concurrent players a day, with more than 80 million unique players a month. That 80 million players is eight times The Last of Us: Part II's cumulative sales, perhaps the most AAA single-player game ever launched on a PlayStation platform. And it took two years to reach that number. So just imagine the reach of Fortnite, the amount of money it makes, and the commercial, cultural, and social gravity it can deploy. To talk about the game -- its origins, its lure, its present and future -- I invited Kazden Risk to the show, who is nearing 2,000 hours played. Forget about a money printer. Fortnite prints billions and billions and billions and billions...

Lol after hearing you and Dagan on Knockback over the years this doesn't shock me. Different strokes, right?

Brian Comstock

Somebody get that dude a glass of water 🤣

Mark Whittington

The Marvel omniverse has always been assumed to contain all fictional properties, the Fortnite crossover doesn't break any canon.

I wish I was as happy about anything as this guy is about Fortnight 😂 Jokes aside this is a seriously interesting episode. I haven't seriously been into a multiplayer game since Assassin's Creed and The Last of Us Factions. Hopefully Factions 2 can pull me back in

Fortnite can be as soulless and poppy as it wants to be and I have nothing against it or its player base. Bring on the colors. Bring on the characters for no reason at all, a la Roblox. The transgression is the price of digital goods. These prices are ruining monetization and the people paying these prices are to blame. For $300 or less you should be able to own every last item in this game. Especially considering Epic isn’t even creatively building on their vision anyway, they are just stuffing it to the brim with other peoples’ properties. I am not down with OPP in this sense of the term.

LastStandMedia

I agree. I cannot believe people are paying that much money for shit. It's insane. And they complain about The Last of Us: Part I being $70?

You touched on something near the end of the episode that I found really interesting Colin. This notion that games are in the midst of a sea change thanks to games like Fortnite. I wonder if this is a topic you'd consider expounding on in the future because I'd love to hear a more thorough conversation from you about whether we've crossed a point of no return in the industry. While it seems obvious that we have, I wonder then what the "optimistic" view of the industry is for people who aren't interested in games that are following Fortnite in the live service direction, or if there really is an optimistic outlook to be had at all. I know this topic about games-as-a-service comes up in various forms on Sacred Symbols, but I think there's plenty more to explore in this topic. Either way, great episode - was really surprised this was as interesting as it was!

I’ve never played Fortnite because I hate the Battle Royale element, but if it had a Team Deathmatch mode I’d probably be all over it.

RYAN EICHLER

It has a built in team deathmatch mode. It’s slightly different, in that the map still shrinks to force players to engage with each other, but there are respawns and first team to 100 kills wins

NeO JD

I didn’t know this. I will check it out. Thanks.

Dead by Daylight is a game I love to play and have played for thousands of hours as well. I think their system is a little more financially sound/fair for users, but I’m sure if they were as big as Fortnite it would be a different story. I used to play my own Battle Royale with friends using the multi tap and elimination mode with one life and bots back in the day on the Timesplitters games, so for me, this type of game isn’t new. It is certainly more revolutionary.

Yeah -- like Colin said I had COVID in October 2021 and due the ventilator my voice was a bit roughed up but it's actually come a long way if you can believe it. Figured it was at a point that was acceptable but I've received mixed opinions. Some people didn't notice or mind and some people couldn't stand it. Will hopefully continue to improve and maybe one day won't be noticeable at all.

Brian Comstock

I had no idea! It didn’t bother me I was just trying to make a joke. Which now I feel like the biggest asshole in the world :)

Kazden Risk

You're good! To be honest I probably would have benefitted from stopping more often to drink water, haha. I got a couple drinks in but was always so nervous that I just kept talking more lol, whoops. But nah -- you're good!

Kazden Risk

Yes, love Fortnite! LOL! But to be fair I love a lot of stuff, as Colin touched on. Dream consumer for a lot of these mega corporations. I'm hyped for Factions 2, too.

Brian Comstock

You honestly did great! It was a very insightful conversation. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Unfortunately, the ventilator to most people is a death sentence. Glad to see you’re doing well!

Kazden Risk

Thank you very much, means a lot. Yeah -- I had heard that before the vent and it was the scariest thing ever to go on it and I was actually on it longer than normal (more than 3 weeks). It got even worse post-vent so ... yeah, was a thing. Happy to be alive! If Colin ever brings back Fireside Chats it'd be a good convo, I think -- haha!

Marco Maluf

Hahahahahah stand down about the man’s voice, “asshole!” 🤣 j/k

Marco Maluf

I will take a peek on the video, he sounds like Chris, I am crazy?

TL

Your voice was fine overall, you just reminded me of Bobcat Goldthwait a few times, lol,

Kazden Risk

Ha! Thanks for the support, everyone. Some comments across YouTube and Reddit weren't as kind but no surprise that the Patreon community is the best there is (and Discord members were nice, too). inb4 Bobcat Goldthwait is added to Fortnite

Kazden Risk

Ha! I don't think so, although I did joke after recording I should have said "Take care, guys!" I don't know if I did it on the show but I've also started to say "wild" more because of Chris.

Marco Maluf

Great interview btw, and hope you have a full recovery from covid. 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼

Fortnite was basically dead in the water and pubg was big at the time so in a last ditch effort they decided to do the Pubg style of game, that’s what made it big not the original game they had. It was not the thanos event it was the pubg battle royal mode that did it.
