The Terminator | KnockBack: The Retro and Nostalgia Podcast Episode 226

James Cameron's 1984 sci-fi/horror flick The Terminator isn't so much underappreciated as it is oft-overlooked. After all, this film's sequel is one of the most famous action and sci-fi movies of all-time, but its predecessor is something more stayed, grounded, and thrilling. Intertwining themes of nuclear war and time travel with a very recognizable 1980s Los Angeles and a handful of wonderful performances, The Terminator does a lot of heavy lifting, not only in catapulting forward a series that still exists to this day, but in proving what science fiction can accomplish outside of the tried-and-true themes of space travel and spaceships and space battles and... space, generally. And yes: Arnold is awesome. Of course he is! So let's get you up to speed on this classic flick, starting with what year it is.

Bill Paxton was the only guy, until the Masterpiece that is Aliens vs Predator - Then the great Lance Henriksen joined that Legendary Status not meant for us mere mortal Men. Sorry Moriarity men for being that "actually guy" Signed - A very fat Colonel who called you a "Cheeky Fellow"

On the subject of updating/remaking, they re-did some scenes from this movie for Termintor Genisys. It's interesting to see, and they did a good job. But Id prefer the originals get left alone, seeing the evolution of these visual effects from movie to movie is so interesting and the original is like a historic artifact that should be preserved, and the more we move into digital only future, the new versions and remasters could completely eliminate the originals. I'm not digging my vcr out from the attic.

My apologies for my written hiccups, I think I get intimidated by trying to be pithy. Really great episode, I always tend to appreciate the subject matter more after you and Dagan chat about it. In the spirit of KnockBack I'm often obsessed with "old stuff", so when looking for new things to watch I have been going back to stuff I missed or never got around to seeing. I honestly believe that 1984 might be the best year in cinema, at least for Gen Xers and early era Millennials.

I think the Star Wars experience scared us away from these possibilities more than it should have. That's Lucas' fault for being so stubborn.

Woah, I cannot wait to dive into this episode! T1 is amazing, I think I like it even more than T2 at this point.

Fun observation that I found out about. The officer that gets his gun stolen by Reese says that its 12th, May, Thursday. If you follow the events of the movie off that line then that would mean the final chase of the film occurs on the night of a Friday the 13th. I see what you did there Cameron. Anyway, an all time favorite, glad to see it discussed.
