PSVR2, PS5 Pro, 8K/120, and PlayStation 6?! | Sacred Symbols+ Episode 195

Hello! As always, please welcome Last Stand's tech analyst, Tom from Moore's Law Is Dead, to our show. Tom returns to talk technology, of course, and with recent news percolating from within and outside of the PlayStation ecosystem, we actually have quite a bit to go over. We start with PlayStation VR2, which we know you all saw on the State of Play a couple of days ago, but which we speak about without such foreknowledge. We're excited about what it can be and how much it may cost. But will the games be there? We then get into PlayStation 5 Pro, which will be coming in 2023 or 2024, and its amazing capabilities, including the possibility of games running at 4K and 120 frames. But what about 8K?! For that, we need to consider another console entirely, a hypothetical one, and well... we do. What do the early tea leaves tell us about PlayStation 6? Does a fast-moving tech industry demand a quicker turn-around? Seems there's less time keeping us between the next console then you might think.

I don't see the point of a PS5 pro yet because games aren't even pushing the console to its limit and nobody cares about 8k but a redesigned slimmer version would be great

I think a Pro model makes sense because 4k and ray tracing are really taxing PS5 hardware on their own despite not using new gen engines like UE5. Having a pro model that's capable of boosting performance on existing games like pushing 60fps in cinematic mode for most games, and more importantly, being able to run UE5 games, at 60fps at least at 1440p, would be a welcome upgrade. Remember PS5 is essentially a PC now, in terms of processor, so Sony could possibly do biannual or triannual pro refreshes to extend this gen through another likely recession instead of launching a PS6 in 2026.

I'd definitely buy one but hopefully it's 2 years from now at least and is a big enough improvement to be worth it

I’m passing on PS5 Pro. Really don’t see the point besides a 4K 60 mode, and I’m fine with the Performance mode in every game. My base PS4 was used all throughout last generation.

This was such a good segment. I especially loved the discussion around the expediency of new and improved hardware. I never knew just how quick technology is being iterated upon. Excited for the next one!

Whatever the next hardware is I just don't want to see 30fps games ever again .

Great discussion, love the insight into the PSVR2. This actually got me hyped to purchase one, where I was indifferent before.

There is a good case to be made for the one wire on the PSVR2. I had several times where my Quest 2 has died right in the middle of a game. I dont like playing plugged in on wireless devices but I know people who play with the Quest 2 plugged in and it still dies. There are also reports of people melting their Quest 2 usb-c port with 3rd party cables while they were in the middle of playing. A single cable could provide stable power source and longer playtime.

Great episode. Sony could release a console 50% better every 3 years if they wanted, which would be twice as fast as their first party game Dev cycles 👍
