Tango Gameworks' newest offering -- console exclusive to PlayStation 5 for the next year -- is its strangest game yet. While still in full embrace of its horror roots (this is Shinji Mikami's team, after all), Tango has opted to get away from scripted and linear play reminiscent of its Evil Within franchise in lieu of something quite different: An open world. What results is a truly different experience, wildly underrated, and woefully-ignored by much of the press. Ghostwire: Tokyo is a unique, enchanting, and deeper-than-meets-the-eye first-person action game with a collectathon twist, and we're pleased to gush about it here on Sacred+. Beware of spoilers! They're everywhere (except the very beginning).

I hope more people find this game and give it a chance too. It truly is a great game and experience. As someone who is apart of the evil within cult I was skeptical about this game but I’m glad I gave it a chance. Great spoilercast as well. I wish I knew more about Japan for a little more context about the game but the story, open world, enemies and combat were all fantastic. Side note: the evil within 3 would be the only reason I would buy an Xbox.

I really enjoyed this game. Definitely exceeded my expectations. Fun combat loop and exploration.

It’s a real shame how little promotion this game got from Sony because this game is a real gem. I found the combat to be incredibly addicting and particularly loved the somber ending with the first song that plays at the final credits. I hope when it comes to game pass it can get a resurgence and maybe that could help it receive a sequel. The combat could be taken to another level IMO like from Doom 2016 to Doom Eternal.

I didn't have any excitement for it or expectations about it, which is always the best pocket to be in.

This game suffered from the Bethesda acquisition and the remade realities on the ground, unfortunately.

Great podcast. I loved this game. Great world. It felt a little sluggish at first, but I stopped noticing after a few hours. Took my time with it. It’s my Platinum #130

Sadly I’m not with ya this time. As someone who likes Tango, the theme, lore and collecting stuff but in this game I found the more I played the less fun I had and my score just kept dropping. The game didn’t respect time, the amount of souls was just too much, combat/movement too slow, levelling up was almost meaningless, level cap, not many spells, I could go on but I guess it just wasn’t for me. Glad you guys enjoyed it. I’m still looking forward to what Tango does next, hopefully it doesn’t feel like a padded out budget game like this one did.

There were so many things I liked about Ghostwire but I really wish this game was a linear 10-15 hours. Maybe a couple of open sections like Uncharted 4/Last of Us 2. I'm so SICK of everything being a collectathon and everything being an open world. I was really enjoying this game but because its way too long for me if you want to platinum it everything is losing its luster. The combat for 10-15 hours is unique and fun. For 30+ hours I'm sick of it. I wish I could stop but I need all the spirits for the platinum which is a frustration in of itself. No wonder games have such a low completion rate these days. So many games to play and they are all so long or too long. Anyway.. Respect to Tango for creating a unique, different and interesting game in some ways that I massively enjoyed. Oh and the setting was incredible! Enjoy the rest of your day sacred slitter heads!

I’m playing through the game now. I can’t wait to circle back to this after I beat it!

Just finished the game and immediately came to listen to this spoiler episode. You did a fantastic job of digging into the wonderful cultural subtleties and broader themes of Ghostwire Tokyo. I absolutely adore this game and right now it's my favourite game of the year and I've played a lot of games so far. I'm no Weeb but interestingly Scarlet Nexus was my GOTY last year. I think the western reviews of this game says as much about our culture as Ghostwire Tokyo says about Japanese culture. Thank you for spending the time to cover this gem in as much detail as you did 🙏🏻

I finally got around to circling back to this episode, and I’m so glad that I did. Ghostwire still sits in my top five games of 2022 and I think about it all the time. When I played it, I was grinding through games for YouTube reviews, and feel like I rushed through it. I appreciate you both talking about that aspect of the review cycle. It changed my perspective on my process. Thank you for that. I also totally agree that everything in Tango’s depiction of Shibuya is so thoughtfully crafted and intently connected. Ghostwire is the under-appreciated game of the year, and that’s a shame. Shouts out to LSM for giving it its day in the sun.
