It's been a while (perhaps too long) since we've had tech YouTuber and podcaster Tom on the show. You may know him from his YouTube channel Moore's Law Is Dead and his podcast Broken Silicon, or you may have seen or heard him on a previous episode of +. As usual, I (Colin) pick his brain about all things PlayStation tech. We split our chat into three silos: First, a deep-dive into PlayStation Plus' upcoming revision, with an eye towards apparent difficulties surrounding PS3 and Vita emulation; then we revisit PSVR2, which many are talking about post-GDC in the most glowing of terms; and finally, we end on PlayStation 5 itself and its future possibilities, both in the form of a redesigned "slim" console and a buffed-out "Pro" iteration. One thing is for certain: Exciting (and interesting) times are ahead.

Congrats to Tom joining as a tech analyst contributor. He's awesome and incredibly informative, can't wait to see him come around more. Defining duke ultimate for the Xbox side soon please 🙏

Glad to hear Tom is going to be a bigger part of SS+. I love his Insights into console hardware and games everytime he is here but not so much the PC focus of MLID, so I am very happy that he will be talking more with you. I am a selfish man and would like a Tom show every month, but I doubt that is in the plans. Do you have a rough idea of how often he will be on? Surely this must have been something you two have discussed.

Ps5 pro rumors already? What do they need more power for? Considering the thought they don't make much on selling the consoles, they sure do like making them.

The issues with the games are probably software related - I had an issue with some games not firing up at all, cause I was downloading them in rest mode, and a software update popped up, and installed, at the same time. Couldn't start some of them, and couldn't get past the main menu in others - preinstalled games like Astro, or stuff that I downloaded later worked fine. I tried booting it into safe mode, rebuilding the database, even installing official software from a pendrive - all the steps listed on Sony's site, but nothing helped. In the end that PS5 got replaced, and I'm on my 3rd machine atm (my launch PS5 just stopped turning on after a few months).

There's a 100% chance that a PS5 Pro will be the first one that I'll get, and I'm damned well looking forward to it. There'll actually be games to play, too.

This is why I just bought a brand new 60gb ps3 fat.

Everyone needs to remember what a short time ago it was that Sony locked down the final specs of the PS5. Developers have been aiming for a performance benchmark for plenty of time but the unique combination of the SSD, Kraken, Tempest and Dual Sense was finalized much later. Horizon, God of War and Gran Turismo had no chance of being PS5 exclusives. I would think even the next couple Sony titles were probably pretty far along before they nailed down the PS5. We will see but pay attention to the obvious. Set your expectations in reality.

Horizon Forbidden West at 60fps and 4k for one thing....

I love Tom. It seems most people here share my sentiment. But if you go on the Sub Reddit, it is the complete opposite. So odd to me

Greg Dawson

Will that change the game in any way? Most people won't even notice the difference. 1080p 60 is fine.

One thing I notice doesn't work on my downstairs PS5 only is YouTube. Often having to restart my console.

I'm not sure that they had no chance. Sony made a cross-gen decision for this gen only, and remember that they publicly said otherwise.

Greg Dawson

They've yet to show it so far. GT7 looks good yeah, buggy as hell and took me all of 12.5 hours of race time to finish the single player 'campaign'. What have they done with the ps5 power so far to move gaming forward? So far load times are the main improvement.

Great episode and I really think Tom has a great idea for the upgrade in just unlocking it more storage and better memory. Great idea and keeps the price right during these inflation filled times. Also happy to hear Tom is more closely joining Sacred Symbols!
