The Xbox Game Pass "Killer" Has Arrived... | Defining Duke Episode 65

After many weeks of reporting, leaking, and speculating, PlayStation's answer to Game Pass is here. Jim Ryan said as much over a year ago that PlayStation was working on that answer to the booming service and it arrives in the form of a three tier subscription that manages to outprice its main competitor. How does it stand on its own and how does it compare to the current dominance of Game Pass? Is PlayStation bowing out of day-and-date releases enough for them to tread water? The Dukes dig in. On Xbox's own home turf, there seems to be trouble brewing. Former Undead Labs studio head Jeff Strain got ahead of a Kotaku piece on him and the studio with his own response to the questions asked by the outlet. It is merely one half of the tale, but is yet another studio going to come under fire? Time shall tell. More importantly then all of this hullabaloo: Chicken wings and game title abbreviations. This is where the really conversation lies in this week's Defining Duke. Early access to new episodes will go live every Thursday ad-free at 12:00 PM EST at http://www.Patreon.com/LastStandMedia . Episodes will be available publicly three days after. I haven’t heard any PlayStation guys hyping this up as a gamepass killer. I think that has come from the games media and YouTubers to generate clicks on their content. It sounds like a good merging or their existing services.

Happy to see some Kirby love on an Xbox podcast. The Amazing Mirror is a solid Metroidvania on the GBA that you can probably easily emulate. Also Matty Canvas Curse is also very good and super unique, but you need a DS for it (you do platforming with the touch screen and stylus). I think Kirby Super Star might be the favorite among hardcore Kirby fans, but I haven't played it because I missed out on the SNES. I should get around to it though.

I got an update from my coworker on the fly thing lol. He meant to say ‘you’re the fly OR the windshield’ and laughed hard when I told him I did a write in on the comment. Hope you get a good laugh outta this fellas.

Since Matty has a 3ds, I would recommend Planet Robobot and Triple Deluxe too. Both are some of Kirby’s best, especially the former

Yeah I heard good things about those two. I regret never picking up a 3ds.

Definitely would like a full spoiler cast for the Halo show. We need yours and Chris’s thoughts on this full thing

I assumed everybody ate boneless wings with a fork. Why would you get your hands saucy if there is no reason to?

If you want to see higher ups egging on toxic fanboy shit just look at the xbox side. The xbox side is so bad i don't even tell ppl i game mostly on xbox. Its so bad they think phil is like Tyson or ali

I loved and finished Elden Ring....but Cog is SPOT ON with his comments. The game gets in its own way far too often

You guys are missing the main point about "Boneless Wings". That’s because boneless wings are not wings at all. They are typically formed from breast meat and are a spin-off of the breaded chicken nugget. It is just a stupid marketing term in order to save money and improve sales. Boneless wings are no closer to real wings than a Chicken Nugget/Popcorn Chicken/Chicken Finger.

Jamie Anderson

Care to elaborate ? That's something people say when the can't think of anything..

Walker Simmons

No matter how successful this service is I can't see them putting something like God Of War Ragnarok on there day and date when they know that game will sell 20+ million copies. Maybe in the future if subscriptions become the main way people consume games

Ryan Zimm

What do you mean? Do you want me to transcribe what Cog said? Just go listen

First off, I don't think the new tiers of PS+ are going to be a good deal. I'll have to see what the libraries are. I suspect most of the games are going to be ones that I already have copies of, so I probably will continue being on the $3-5/mo tier of PS+. It's kind of a step backward since they had hundreds of games on the PS+ instant game collection 12 years ago at $50/year. But I don't know of ANYONE who pays monthly for the PS+ subscription. Every person I've talked to either buys the yearly cards (often at a discount to take the price down to $35-45 per year) or just pays for the yearly plan automatically at $60. That means that PS+ base tier is effectively $5 per month or less, vs the $10 per month for the lowest tier of Xbox Gold and the base tier of Xbox or PC gamepass. The Yearly price of the other two tiers are $100 and $120 per year, so $8.33 to $10 per month... Thus, the $15 per month Gamepass Ultimate is higher than the $120/year PS+ Overpriced edition, because they don't offer a discounted yearly tier. It's a $96 discount to buy the yearly plan vs paying month to month for the overpriced edition of PS+, so there's very little reason NOT to go for the yearly plan. I suspect that my PS3 BC will be done via Steam Deck in the future.
