As long-rumored, PlayStation Plus is receiving its first major refresh since the subscription service launched in 2010. Beginning in June, the PS+ will split into three, with its base form being the PS+ we're all familiar with. Atop that will be two more tiers, however, giving players access to hundreds of PSone, PS2, PS3, and PSP games, and more. But there are, of course, many catches. We spend a great deal of time delving into the ins-and-outs of PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra, and Premium, and deliver the rest of the week's news, too, including information on April's free PS+ games, details surrounding a possible Knack revival, Gran Turismo 7's ongoing microtransaction saga, Firesprites trio of in-development games, and more. We also focus-in on our experiences with Ghostwire: Tokyo on PS5, which we like a lot. Then: Listener inquiries! Has Elden Ring permanently altered players' expectations for open worlds? How useful are spoilercasts to our audience? What license should get the Hogwarts Legacy treatment? Can we help one listener find love at work?

Anthony’s question about Imagine Dragons hit me in the feels as I went through that exact situation with my kids. And the only thing I can say is that it’s great children have incredibly short attention spans and will move on to the next multi-award winning pop-rock group soon enough. Plus I keep in my mind that my parents put up with nickelback 3-doors down and hoobastank, don’t know how they did it.

My issue with subscriptions like NSO (and PS+++) is that it essentially locks entire games behind a subscription. Yeah I get that people don't care about old games, but could you imagine if Breath of the Wild 2 was only available through the newly announced NSO Expansion Pak Deluxe? Something like that won't happen in the near future, but the dominos have been set. I know people worry about the impact of Game Pass on the industry, but I can buy literally every single game on that service. That said, Nintendo is the market leader so I understand Sony following them and not Microsoft. I am playing a ton of 360 and OG Xbox games without being subscribed to Game Pass (I'm not interested in the service atm or near future), so it would be terrible if these games were "subscription exclusive." Anyway, the new PS+ is ultimately an improvement of what we had before, so I don't mean to complain too harshly.

PS Plus Update. It bugs me that some people are not reading what is written and understanding it, rather they are putting words in PS' mouth for their hopes for the subscription. The PS Plus Premium says you can download & play games from PSX, PS2 & PSP. Nowhere does it market "enhanced", "better than before" or "updated" to play these games. Take it for what it says. You can play them. I read that as I can download those old games and play them as they were. PlayStation had generations to update, boost or enhance games but didn't do anything when PS2 could play PSX games or nothing done to PSX or PS2 games when played on the original PS3. So why would now be any different? Yeah a few games from PS2 got uprezed to play on PS4 but not the whole catalog. Colin and others predicted PlayStation was going to roll PS Now into PS Plus for a long time. So why are people hoping or assuming this has anything to do with GamePass? I do hope the steaming will get better, use the Microsoft Azure service but nothing was mentioned about an enhanced streaming either. I live in Alaska so my internet is shit. Ping is way too high for game streaming from any service. They did not say available a la carte, I could be wrong but they didn't say the backwards compatible games were only for the subscription service. I feel people need to read the blog again and take it for what it is.

Wow. The Keebler elves have developed a bioweapon that can strike a tornado down on our leader at will. Are we sure this is a war we want to wage?

Kyle Fox

The words "Naughty Dog is shutting down" just looks wrong even when I see the other words lol

Peter Pham

My kids loved knack 1 and 2. I'll buy knack 3 day 1 if it comes out!

NeO JD

Plants better than dinosaurs? Wtf? lol Chris says “clearly you’re not playing a fighting game for the story.” But that’s exactly why I play the NetherRealm games. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Is it a common thing to say that God of War(2018) doesn’t play as good as it looks? Because that’s not how I feel at all.

Kyle Fox

3 Doors Down and Hoobastank are still in my Spotify liked!

John Goetz

It's weird they seem to assume it's not a la carte. I saw no indication that that would not be the case for every downloadable game

LastStandMedia

Honestly, I could imagine that, yes. Which is why we should be rebelling against subscription services for new titles and services.

John Goetz

So for instance Siren is on PSNOW right now but I can also buy it for $10 on the store. They didn't really give any indication one way or another but unless there's some insider info here it would be logical to assume they'll keep the same policy they've had for 3 generations and currently have for classics of a la carte purchases

John Goetz

Well I saw no indication from Sony's announcement that they would suddenly stop offering the individual purchases of classic titles. Siren is on PSNOW and yet I can buy it on the store for $10 without being subbed to Now.

That's good to hear. The way Chris was saying backwards compatibility would be locked behind a pay wall made me think that was not going to be the case. Let's hope Sony doesn't pull a NSO here.

Hey I saw your reply to my comment so I figured I'll comment here too real quick. The phrasing Chris used to describe how backwards compatibility would be behind a pay wall is what concerned me, but from your comment I think those may be unfounded concerns. Maybe Chris was just talking about PS3 there and I missed some context. Or maybe he thinks that new PS1 and PS2 stuff won't be put up for individual purchase like I initially thought. Idk what to expect honestly.

John Goetz

For now Sony hasn't clarified either way publicly is my point. It's always been the case that classics on both the PS3 and modern PlayStation store are available for individual purchase aside from the streaming only stuff. So until Sony says otherwise my assumption is that will remain since they already offer a sub that includes PS2 games (PSNOW) and yet I can buy those same PS2 games individually. Now maybe they change as Nintendo used to offer individual purchases too and now locks BC behind a sub but I dunno if I would just assume Sony will do a sudden 180 on what they've always done until I see them say so. Now maybe the guys have some insider info as I'm just going by publicly what Sony has said. They all seem to assume they'll go the Nintendo route so maybe they know something privately but that's just pure conjecture on my part from listening to this and no one bringing up that Sony has given no indication of the sub being the only way to experience those games.
