Saudi Arabia Has Entered the Chat | Sacred Symbols+ Episode 172

A few weeks ago, I (Colin) conducted what ended up being a mega-popular episode of Sacred Symbols+ with an expert on China. Why was that relevant to this audience? Well, China is spending a whole lot of money on gaming, and we should at least know what we're getting into. A smaller national player has also entered the arena, though: Saudi Arabia. With one of the world's largest sovereign wealth funds, the Saudi government -- a totalitarian, dynastic Islamist monarchy -- owns pieces of Take Two, EA, Activision-Blizzard, and others, including a full 5% of Capcom and Nacon. And then there's the Saudi government-run non-profit, Misk, which owns a majority of SNK, as well as other tech entities. Now, Saudi money isn't just any money, and Saudi Arabia isn't just any country. It's a mega-rich petrostate, run under Sharia Law, where women don't have anywhere near the same rights as men, where being gay or transgender can get you thrown in prison, and where beheadings are regularly conducted, in public, for all to see. We say it on the show all the time: It's impossible to live an economically moral life. That's true with Saudi Arabia, too. But we should at least have our eyes wide open as to what we're getting into, and to do that, I've invited Dr. Robert C. Mogielnicki, Senior Resident Scholar at The Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington DC, to explain all we need to know about this new, heavily-weighted cash flowing into our space.

Colin, Thank you for the great content! As a lover of politics and a fan of gaming, episodes where those two intersect are especially appealing. Sincerely, Zach

this is becoming a societal issue globally, second captains(An Irish based sports podcast/ patreon) were discussing this recently as the Saudi sovereign wealth fund has bought a premier league football(soccer) team newcastle united and is seemingly set on buying Chelsea football club which was recently seized from a Russian oligarch. World cant keep burying its head and ignoring sports-washing,video games washing or whatever else these regimes buy with money to distract the world. Great podcast

The whole 'fit and proper' test with English Football clubs is a disastrous failure. Hopefully, the Chelsea and Newcastle situation forces the FA into fixing it, once and for all.

Yep,the premier league with a straight face saying we can categorically confirm that the Saudi government will have no say in the SAUDI SOVEREIGN WEALTH FUND owned Newcastle united is up there with the biggest bullshit I've ever heard. the fit and proper person test now coming in reeks of closing the stable door after the horse has bolted. Russian money is no longer good, now its middle east to fill the void

Great show….just this week Saudi Arabia beheaded 81 people on a single day some for “thought crimes” they are evil incarnate. Just today they suggested to sell China oil in yuan not the always standard market currency of the dollar……Never forget 15 of 19 hijacker’s were from Saudi Arabia and they cut up a Washington Post journalist with a bone saw……shame on any games company doing business with the Saudi’s
