Modern Warfare | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 192

The eyes of the world are on Eastern Europe, where the Russian invasion of Ukraine has unsettled the post-World War II order. Perhaps not surprisingly, external forces in the west are bringing their economic might to bear to help halt the senseless violence. While Ukrainian politicians ask the gaming industry to do more, some have already started to do what they can. EA, for instance, has removed the Russian national teams and associated clubs from their FIFA and NHL games, while developers like CD Projekt have halted game sales in Russia, full-stop. Is this the right answer? Will it do any good? Or is the industry contributing to the demonization of a society that doesn't support its government and didn't ask for these actions? We discuss. Plus: Ghostwire gets a visual novel prequel, Twisted Metal's TV show is greenlit by Peacock, Trails From Zero receives a western release date, Capcom's renaissance continues unabated, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Is PlayStation 5 officially a must-buy? With Infamous and Sly Cooper rumors circulating, which teams would be appropriate to tackle both? What's Epic's intent in buying Bandcamp? Should the boys go to a fan's wedding? Thank you guys for reading out my question. I do have a follow up session with the hygienist as she said she will show me how to clean my teeth once I get my new aligners in. For context it was the end of the day so maybe she was just being nice, however thinking about what everyone has said I will ask her out (If I am feeling brave enough) If we do eventually get married I want CDC to fly out to dublin for the wedding haha All jokes aside thanks for the advice and another great episode.

Sick. I got Invisalign in 2020, for about six months. It's a great service. (If that's what you're referring to, and I think it is.)

SO completely with you on review scores, Colin. With them, you get these silly questions like “This game got a 97, but I found a bug, does that mean all these scores are biased?” Like no, that’s just other peoples experiences and opinions, you could write your own review if you disagree. Like good lord, these last few months have been filled with “Do you agree with x score or x review” when the people aren’t even asking about the actual content and written words of the review, which is what actually matters. Some people act like games are just tests for reviewers or themselves to “grade” with their review scores, when that’s not their purpose. So anyway that’s my rant on review scores, good show, guys

Another banger of an episode, of course. Colin, I'm really excited that your conversation with Sale Lilly is leading to a similar one with an analyst on Saudi Arabia, and I can't help but hope that there's somewhat of a recurring cadence with experts on these markets/governments and the many implications on gaming. Not necessarily realistic to have RAND Corp contributors on regularly like Hoeg, but I can imagine a universe where these conversations continue (and are revisited) with a SS+ episode every few months, and I think a lot of the audience would love that.

Is Chris going to put that giant Watch Dogs poster back up in his new space?

It's just strange to try and reduce a subjective experience to the most objective qualifier imaginable.

Thank you Colin about the doctor and the weight issue. Last year was my first time going to the doctor and get a physical done in over 20 years and I was so confused when they told me to get on the scale in the hallway. I thought I guess things have changed after all this time. I saw what they wrote down to see if they subtracted factoring my clothing etc and nope they just wrote down what came up. Same thing when I went this year again. I guess it's something they just don't care about anymore.

They / some patients are shy of nakedness. Also people vainly drop weight by de-hydrating prior to visiting the doctor, so leaving clothes on simulates their hydrated weight.

I can't get enough of that Jim Ryan controller joke. Delights me every time XD

Colin, I see from your comment above that you aren't psyched about mitigating difficulty in ER through online co-op. I'm not either, but if it might ease your thoughts I'll just say that you can find NPCs in the dungeons who will wait outside of the Boss fight arenas should you want to ask them for help. I don't know if they can be found in every dungeon, but from my experience so far there is precedent set for that to be the case, and it was a great help for me when I discovered one while trying to level up for a boss who was giving me trouble. The NPC and I got the job done together and it was nice to have that battle contained in my own single player game.

I respect Elden Ring, and I appreciate the enjoyment people get out of it. I've watched hours of content of it from multiple Twitch streamers. Yet the cult following of this game is a little irksome, because I was hoping it would feel different and 'revolutionary' but it's honestly open world Dark Souls, made for Souls-like fans. And it is DEFINITELY getting a free pass despite its performance issues and other design problems (I've seen some people report input delay and such like). We'd rip apart other games for this, and yet it's okay cause it's FromSoftware??? It just feels like Souls games are given higher status simply for being challenging and having no objective markers, as if that's somehow enough to be more than other games. And I absolutely detest the elitism within some of the Souls-like community, where they seem to make the game harder for themselves and make fun of people that use magic, summons and anything that makes the game more manageable. And if you don't enjoy the game or struggle with it, you're greeted with the usual 'get good' comments. It seems like if you don't worship the ground these games stand on, you're not even allowed to have an opinion on them. Before anyone asks, I haven't played Elden Ring specifically so I am not prescribing any level of objective quality. But I have played multiple Souls' games: Dark Souls 1 and 2, Bloodborne, Sekiro, Nioh, Code Vein; Nioh was the one I enjoyed the most, but even then it's just not for me. I've played them each for at least 3 hours and beaten a few bosses, so it's not a 'get good' situation. I'm more of a Ninja Gaiden/ Devil May Cry fan and I just can't get into these stamina bar action games. Note hate, just my thoughts.
