Souls Retrospective | Sacred Symbols+ Episode 165

We are merely days away from the next anticipated FromSoftware release, Elden Ring. With the insane levels of hype surrounding the launch, I (Dustin) thought it would be a fantastic time to look back at FromSoftware's "Souls" games and what makes them great. Filled with iconic locations, characters, weapons, and boss fights, FromSoftware and their creative mastermind Hidetaka Miyazaki have completely changed the video game landscape over the past 13 years or so. Join Matty and me, as we discuss these treasured titles along with your questions and comments.

Wrong names under Dustin and Matty at the start just FYI.

Dustin Furman

Thank you for the catch. I was so confused because I caught this and fixed it in premiere but must have uploaded the wrong file. :(

When this was announced I was so excited. Can't wait to dive in.

I’ll be listening this afternoon / weekend. Do y’all get into “where to start with souls” during this? Excited to hear the convo either way!

Jeffrey Willingham

Yes! So excited for this one. My poor wife has had to listen to me hype up Elden Ring for months lol it’ll be nice to just listen to you guys talk about FromSoft

Dustin Furman

Recording this episode flew by fast. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did making it!

UnkemptHawk

Love seeing Matty and Dustin back together, reminds me of the HAM Radio days, miss you two podcasting together all the time!

Tanner Brant

Glad you guys brought up Berserk! Such a great series

Not to talk shit, love the content. But I was expecting Dustin and Matty to be a little more knowledgeable about these games...

Dustin Furman

I don’t know what you were expecting, but I’m sorry we didn’t meet it.

Oh it's no worries man. Still enjoyed it! I guess I'm just so entrenched in Souls I get a little jaded about lore, narrative design, and the overall experience. To each his own of course, keep trucking!

Austin

This was one of my favorite + episodes, partly because of the casual weeb talk in the beginning. I think we need a recurring show with you two talking anime and other weeberies.

Walker Simmons

Matty didn't beat Dark Souls 3 or Sekiro? Fraud confirmed. Jk boys thanks for the dope content I have the week off of work for Elden Ring 🔥🔥🔥

Love you both and the episode was great, I just want to say a take on the series since it's not a common one. Okay as much as love the series as a whole. I will come in the most hot take of all and say Dark souls 2 Sotfs is my favourite of all of from's games and surprisingly bloodborne is my least favourite. I could get into more detail if asked about bloodborne but for now the reasons I love ds 2. I will admit ds 2 had problems definitely, however I really liked a lot of the changes made to weapon handling in ds2 allowing for left handed people like me to mirror the standard r1 r2 setup to the left triggers. The ability to truly dual weld any weapon combination in the game and the introduction of powerstancing which was a game changer for the pvp scene in ds2. I have to say this is why dark souls 3 is second last since it took away these improvements to combat and became basically more of a direct sequel to ds1 which is fine. As brilliant as Miyazaki is I felt alienated for liking ds2 and it not really being referenced in ds3 since most call backs were to ds1. At the end of the game they are a great series of games and I appreciate them all. Anyway thanks to anyone got this far in the wall of text. I just wanted to talk about one of my favourite games and how it should be appreciated just as much as others in the series.

While I’m absolutely not a huge Souls guy, it was interesting hearing you both breakdown what makes the franchise so special for many. I’m not getting Elden Ring at launch (too much of a souls newb) but hearing this did make me consider trying the series again. And plus, this brought back HAM radio memories hearing you two host a podcast again. Keep up the great work and hope you guys love Elden Ring when it launches

I enjoyed this rare episode. It was like a fine wine with notes of Weebery. Please sir, may I have some more? Perhaps a Persona episode?

I agree Dark Souls 2 misses some of the essence of what makes the others great, but I can’t agree that it’s a bad game at all. The unavoidable deaths are exaggerated, there might be one or two in the whole game. DS1 had them too.

Anthony Longo

Honestly lost s little respect for you Dustin for your list at the end. You obviously didn’t play the games until recent. Still love ya but was really hoping for some Souls representation on CLS abs Mattt did well but damn smh Dustin. Anyway glad you guys at least played some of them. Good vid.

Daryl Rodriguez

Dark Souls 2 isn’t bad, but it has strong Jurassic Park 2 vibes.

Would of loved to know what boss you guys got stuck on for the longest period of time? Mine was Father Owl for 5 hours and then going on to give up playing sekiro once reaching isshin. Happy to say I did go back, 4 months later to replay the whole game and finally beating him

I wish the hosts were a little more prepared for this topic. Seemed somewhat from the hip.
