We are merely days away from the next anticipated FromSoftware release, Elden Ring. With the insane levels of hype surrounding the launch, I (Dustin) thought it would be a fantastic time to look back at FromSoftware's "Souls" games and what makes them great. Filled with iconic locations, characters, weapons, and boss fights, FromSoftware and their creative mastermind Hidetaka Miyazaki have completely changed the video game landscape over the past 13 years or so. Join Matty and me, as we discuss these treasured titles along with your questions and comments.

The titty gobbler returns to sacred symbols!

This should have been a five hour episode lol. Believe it or not I think I’m more excited for salt and sacrifice than I am for elden ring. I think you should give it a try Dustin. Salt and sanctuary was awesome. Also I want to give you credit for ender lillies last year, that was a great game I beat last year based on your recommendation.

Hell yeah! Can’t wait to listen to this on my next work shift.

Little feedback for my boys, it seems the + episodes have around a 1hr limit. If this is the case, I think yall should just let these babies take their own life and finish when the conversation needs to, I can tell Dustin wanted to keep it going. Maybe I'm wrong and if that is the case just ignore me I'll keep walking that way 👉👉👉😂

Great conversation boys, but I would like to lend some constructive criticism. When I saw the word ‘retrospective,’ I though oh man, this is big business. Then I saw an 82 minute runtime and thought “how in the hell did they cover this all in less than an hour and a half?” Fast forward to the end, Dustin, you say “we barely took any audience submissions” and “we barely scratched the surface, we could’ve talked about this for hours and hours.” So why didn’t you? This is the retrospective, if there was ever a time to do it, it was here and now! Like I said, this was fun, but it didn’t feel complete in any way. And reading through the comments, it looks like the majority of listeners feel this way. But hey, when the listeners want MORE, you’re doing something right. Hope you guys have a good day!

This is the kind of content I can get down with

Great episode. Dark Souls 2 is the only one I played. I really enjoyed it. It's funny to hear it's wildly considered the worst of the series.

Souls is a weird one for me. I adore DS1 more than anything and DeS is great but I really genuinely feel that 2 onwards lost a lot of the fantasy mystique that makes those games special to me. Instead, games like DS3 and Bloodborne lean into trying to be cool and playing up how "hardcore" they are way too much for my liking. DS1 especially is a slow, sombre and sad game and I hate that some of that went away, even starting as early as that games DLC.

Naturally, I totally disagree with Matty regarding the storytelling. Just kidding. But its how its told that is so fundamental to these games. Everytime a new one comes comes out its a community event. Its not only the game itself, its the puzzle of the lore and story that the community is piecing together. I think its such a better use of the medium of interactive video games.

I’m sad I missed the boat on question submission but I’m super pumped to listen to this. Thanks for making it!

Cramming six full games into an 80 minute discussion? That's some dark Souls level difficulty, yo. Each of these games could have their own retrospective, it would do more justice to the discussion.

Hearing this got me excited for Elden Ring or to play Dark Souls again! This did seem like a short one though and I don't think I heard anything about the multiplayer/covenants. I found this to be one of the best parts of souls games. I've never panicked so much in a game when being invaded and helping someone out with a boss fight feels great. Hopefully we get some expanded content in the future. Keep up the good work gents! (and ladies)

I agree with this 100%. Whenever I hear people proclaim bb or ds3 to be the best, I question what a lot of these people even liked about ds1. It seems like there's a schism growing in the fan base in regards to that.

I loved this soo much and can’t wait for elden ring. I will be broken after this game. I love from software to death.

Bloodborne is a true masterpiece. My first fromsoft game, and probably my favorite platinum. Definitely in the top two.

Sony is going to make an acquisition whether we like it or not. From has to be their target right?

Michael Cook

This was excellent. I never finished Bloodborne. Dare I go back...

I don’t even like From Soft games but I enjoyed listening to Dustin and Mattey get nostalgic. Maybe I’ll give one another shot.
