It seems like PlayStation has taken some body blows recently, but stark reality paints a different picture. Sales data shows PlayStation 5 is steadily outselling Xbox Series X|S, while games like the original Horizon and Miles Morales are doing Nintendo first party-level numbers, something its primary competition could only dream of. Heck, with Cyberpunk 2077 sneakily arriving on PlayStation 5 in the shadow of Horizon: Forbidden West's launch, there's much to be excited about. Of course, it isn't all good news. Sony second-party partner Haven has already lost its COO and co-founder -- a bad sign, indeed -- while PlayStation seems to be unnecessarily screwing around with cross-gen pricing. And what's up with Platinum Games' recent desperation and the censoring of horror game Martha Is Dead? We discuss. We then end, as we usually do, with a smattering of listener inquiries. Does the upcoming closure of Wii U's and 3DS' digital storefronts portend bad things for PS3 and Vita? Is Sony Pictures on the verge of taking full advantage of the Destiny IP? What's with all the anti-"gamer" hate in the industry? Will Chris ever return to New York?

Hey dude I hate to be that guy, be careful with the amount of sodium in murachan. This guy I knew in college got really sick from eating those for an entire summer due to the sodium level. He basically has to live a low sodium life now.

Xbox sold some kind of special edition for Forza Horizon 5 that gave players access to the game a few days before it became available on Game Pass. I think people figured out how many people bought that version of the game from the in-game leaderboards (which had zero Game Pass players at that time). It was a high number (I forget what exactly), so it made some news. I forget the details, but I figured I should write in since Colin is very curious about the subject. I think the game might have been on NPD or something else. Again, I don't really follow (or care about) this kind of sales analysis. I just listen to way too many gaming podcasts such that I can vaguely remember a lot of random info.

Let's be real. Paying an extra $10 for simple graphic and frame rate settings is super dumb and should be loudly called out.

Stephen Forgione

Pretty sure the Visual Concepts racing IP could be Midnight Club since Take2 owns that (through Rockstar’s label). It’s definitely popular enough to warrant “world-class” status IMO

LastStandMedia

Yeah, I'm wondering where this bug was set in my head, apart from the dubious Google search. Either way, I need to be more exact. That's my error.

Brandon Soto

Horizon 2 PS5 upgrade just proves that Smart Delivery does work, they just choose not to do it.

Jeremy Seal

I would kill for an Insomniac made Attack on Titan game. A kinetic Attack on Titan gang would sell gangbusters.

LevelWiley

Woo! Typically save SS for Saturdays, but the From Soft one will be enough. :D

Good episode gents! Just a note, another point towards this Capcom reveal being Street Fighter related is that this weekend, the Capcom pro tour season finals are taking place online. The final day will be Sunday, the day the timer runs out and generally fighting game companies do reveals before the top 8 or Grand Finals. So it’s very likely that it’s street fighter related and will be announced during the tournament.

Hey guys just a little insight into the SEO behind the “10 million Forza 5” on Google. I’m a SEO manager/analyst at a Marketing firm in Charleston SC. Those little information blocks from google are called Google snippets. The algorithm pulls that “snippet” of information based on a few things. 1. Date published 2. # of visits to that link and 3. Credibility of the site of which the businesses industry is in. 4. Time spent reading that article. Googles snippet algorithm is not always accurate. Google is also looking at the keyword the user has searched. When you searched “10 million Forza 5” into the search bar, google looked looked to feed the most relevant data that matched those keywords. If you’d have searched including the keyword “sold” it probably would have yielded much different results. Love the content guys. And remember not everything on the internet is true ;)

That sweet oat bread sounds delicious. Could Micah or Dustin show where one could find this recipe? I also bought a kitchen aid stand mixer for my wife. It was really her asking me to get one so that I would make baked goods with it. I've gotten super lazy cooking dinner so this way I can contribute a little more on the food front.

Just got a new car with Bluetooth so now I can listen in my car. Fridays just got better.

Sonic the movie was good but not great. I enjoyed watching it with my 7 year old daughter which probably made it better then what it actually is. If I didn't have a kid then most likely I wouldn't of watched it.

Derek Alcott

Yes Colin played Hades. I look forward to hear more as he gets further along.

What drip are people talking about I only hear voices.

"The PS4 digital versions of launch games include a free upgrade on both PS5 consoles, while the PS4 disc versions of these games include a free upgrade on the PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-Ray disc drive." - Jim Ryan That was the statement. Horizon Forbidden West is not a launch game. Obviously giving an upgrade is the better move, but it was not promised. People don't read things closely, and the internet just runs with a false narrative. Then again, people have repeated the "Hello games promised that No Man's Sky was going to have MMO style multiplayer where anyone could meet" narrative, even while the company was making efforts years out from launch to dispel that idea (see this 2014 Game Informer interview with Sean Murray entitled "Stop Thinking Of No Man’s Sky As A Multiplayer Game" which specifically refutes this narrative: https://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2014/12/10/stop-thinking-of-no-man-s-sky-as-a-multiplayer-game.aspx)

If you like Ramen I 100% recommend the Black Garlic Nissin ramen, it’s on Amazon for sure, haven’t tried it on Walmart.

LastStandMedia

This seems to be talking past what we were saying, which is that it's dubious to sell the same game for $10 difference.

Mitchell Lundsberg

I love sacred symbols/last stand because everyone here recognizes video games are suppose to be fun. We can joke around and have serious “grownup” conversations. As always, great work gentlemen and I can’t wait to see you in the forbidden west.

Bryce Mccloskey

Colin did you drop persona 4? You didn't mention it this episode I thought you were close to the end? Just wondering and would like to hear your full thoughts about it sometime

Domenico Smarto

Hey Colin, if you’re looking for an FPS Back 4 Blood recently got a patch where you can play solo campaign offline.

Ramen for dessert🤣 love it. Great episode again lads👏

Hose A Contra Razz

Great show, the review system should be, buy new, used, sale, rent or skip.

Just a heads up I really liked the uncharted movie. There was a lot of wink and nods towards fans of the series and you know what it wasn't completely botched so Hey awesome.

The Rose Experience

I don’t think people, including myself, are asking for some lengthy breakdowns of the games you’re into but with the podcast run times climbing up the scale there’s definitely some room for discussion. Would’ve loved to hear your take on Record of Lodoss War for instance, a little more on Death’s Door from Dustin and while one off SS+ episodes are great they’re just dissecting one game and by your own admission, you’re playing a ton. There’s room for it, people want it and consider it a compliment that people care to hear your beneath surface level takes on the latest games you’re delving into. Looking forward to 6 minutes on Life of Black Tiger. Thanks Colin.

The Rose Experience

Just wanted to add, it doesn’t have to be for literally everything, but I’m as interested in the smaller games as I am the large tent pole releases that some are seemingly waiting on with baited breath. I’ve always been a big fan of Colin’s takes in games and frankly, I don’t think there’s been enough of it on the podcasts. I’m here regardless though. Enjoy the weekend.

Artisan Bonez

I heard Dustin is somewhat of a connoisseur for that fire anime drip. Look no further you lint licking scallywag. Look up Artisan Bonez on Instagram. You won’t be disappointed

Zack E

Sony shouldn’t force games to have demos. But they should encourage it. Maybe if your game has a demo, you get 1-2% points more of the revenue split.

Dave Ramos

So I had one friend a few years back who never played a JRPG outside of Pokémon (if you count it as such). I recommended him Persona 5 and he ended up loving it and went back and played P3 and P4. As for me, my first JRPG was actually Tales of Symphonia. Nowadays, I'd recommend people play Trails of Cold Steel. My reasoning beyond just being biased is if you like it, you'll have a great story and amazing turn-based combat to keep you busy for multiple games.

Dang

Ah! Forbidden west is so good! Crazy Sci fi shit is going off! Anyone who criticizes the story I'll have to wonder if they actually played the game

Kyle Fox

I was not impressed with the first game's story. How does it stack up? Better? Different? Worth playing if I didn't like the first? I will say I played about 5 hours and then later watched the cutscenes on Youtube.

MISZCZOGRZMOT

I think Sony is losing money on 1st party games that 'hold their value' longer. They're not Nintendo, there's more 3rd party stuff on PS5, and no one's playing by SONY's rules when it comes to game prices. I've had a PS5 since launch and I haven't bought a single 1st party game yet, cause I can't in good conscience support paying $100 for a base game release (EU prices). A game like RE8 comes out here, and it's not $90-100 at launch on PSN, like all of Sony's exclusives are, it's ~$70 brand spanking new. Few months later you can even snag it for about half of that, on sale, meanwhile Sony exclusives keep hovering around $85-90 even 1+ year later. The price disparity between PSN prices and retail prices are insane, here, too - R&T a Rift Apart is currently $85 on PSN, and I can get it for ~$60 at retail. Miles Morales PS5 - $65 PSN / $22 retail, Returnal - $85 PSN, $30 Retail. Wish I wasn't so comfortable with digital games, and went for a PS5 with disc drive, but alas, here I am - stuck with $100 games, $22 next gen upgrades, and games like Miles Morales that still hold Spiderman's PS5 version hostage behind MM's 'ultimate' bundle. I used to buy every PS4 exclusive before, and Sony got way more money from me when the prices were more reasonable (even though PS4 games were already $85 in EU for at least 10 years), but now 3rd party's getting pretty much all of my money (aside from PS+). Software sales of exclusives seem to be down on PS5, too - A Rift Apart sold barely over 1mln units, meanwhile '2016 was Insomniacs fastest selling game befpre Spiderman (sales estimated at ~6mln). Returnal? 500k+. Demon's Souls? 1.4mln, the PS3 version hit double that lifetime, Souls games weren't really a thing back then, and there was nothing else worth playing on PS5 at launch aside from this and Miles(And Astro, which was free). Speaking of which - Spiderman PS4 sold 3x more than Miles did. Nobody's winning here. (Keep in mind the numbers here are just quick google searches - I'd be more than happy to hear more accurate numbers) $70 (+tax ~$77?) US price makes sense as a base PS5 game price point to me, but the prices in different markets are really all over the place.

AllTooEasy_

Probably going to accused of being a fan boy but I don’t mind paying the extra 10 bucks for the HFW PS5 version. I bought my disc version and I just moved on. I like to support these studios by purchasing on launch day and I have a PS5 so I’ll by the PS5 version. I find it weird that so many outlets are directing people to by the 60 dollar PS4 version and upgrade it. IGN and Forbes farming clicks to save people 10 dollars. Should Sony have made it 60 bucks across the board? Yes. But it really isn’t that big of a deal in my opinion.

Dan T

Are you guys planning on doing a Destiny 2 Witch Queen spoilercast? Since Bungie is technically part of the family now, I think an episode focused on this new expansion, maybe with Chris and Cog, would be very cool.

Peabody

I don’t know if it was mentioned, but the multiplayer in Bioshock 2 also covered the fall of Rapture. However, I can see that could be considered non-canon and/or not that well-remembered.

The major license driving game is The Simpsons Hit and Run 2

Missing Chris.

In regards to the last question. I'm not into JRPG games, but ni no kuni was my first and last turned base JRPG game I played and finished. Thanks to Colin's review back in his IGN days. Loved it, but turned base isn't for me. I can see why Dustin didn't like FFXV, but I loved it. Ardyn is one of my favorite video game villain.

Peter Pham

Also, I'm not into roguelite and soul-like games. With that said, I loved sifu. If you're into old school Kung-fu movies, like Jackie chan, Jet Li, or the raid, you'll like sifu. It's my first git gud, roguelite game, possibly my last, but I loved it for its combat and style. If those things tickle your fancy, i recommend it. Dustin, don't be ashamed, but there's YouTube guides on how to beat the bosses. I used it for 3 of the 5 bosses.

easelgames

I keep trying to get into it, but traversal is so empty and bland even with the car I always drop the game.

Samuel Zamora

For Dustin’s bit on Sifu, the best advice I can give with mastering the mechanics is to block… just hold block (L1) and flick the left analog stick in different directions to block. It sounds simple but once it clicks, every enemy becomes wayyy easier. This will help with Sean. With blocking his low sweep, watch for the motion where he starts high and motions lower to initiate the sweep. Hold block and flick analog up, either dodge back (just press R2) or strike him quickly and get ready to block his next attack. That’s the best advice I can give. The other moves can be blocked by holding block and on the last move flick the analog stick in the down direction and follow up with one light and two heavy attacks. Sparing him is another beast, I just got that finished after 30 fights after beating him at age 20 which took about 20 to beat him. Best way to practice blocking/moves is at the first dance floor (The Club) area where there’s several fighters. Just hold block and flick the analog stick in different directions to get the timing and when/where to block. Also another place to practice is starting a new game on a different profile (not to ruin progress). In the new game, practice blocking with Yang at the intro. He can’t die and doesn’t take damage. I believe he has all the moves unlocked except for the focus movesets. I’m loving this game and 7 trophies away from the platinum. I hope there is more content. Sparing bosses is going to be the death of me.

Samuel Zamora

I recently “got gud” last month when I platinum’d Sekiro. It was my first time playing any souls game for longer than 10mins. Coming off of Sekiro and into this , has helped me tremendously.

Kevin Cooper

Shout out to everyone who wears their Welcome Park trophies like a badge of honor.

David Taylor

On the Forza Horizon numbers. I think Forza Horizon 4 was estimated last year to have sold around 10 million copies (it got a massive sales bump after it hit Steam) and I believe hit like 22 million players, maybe more. FH5 just hit 18 million players. There is no sales numbers but I checked the leaderboard a few hours before the game went live on Gamepass and there was 4.5M people on there so I do think it is safe to assume most of those people paid at least $40 for the DLC Pass (which is what I did) and a handful prolly bought the $100 version which also included the early access. Not the biggest numbers of all time but I still see friends playing FH4 pretty regularly (my brother and a couple people I know preferred it to 5 and dropped off of that one pretty quick) and they are prolly all playing on Gamepass so to be fair they have prolly bought the game 5 times over at this point.

David Taylor

There are none, will probably never be any. Just estimates as always. But the leaderboard during the early access period for Forza Horizon 5 gave at least some idea as to how many people were paying for the game since the only ways to have had access was to either be a reviewer, pay $40 for the expansion pass and have Gamepass or buy the version of the game with the expansion pass ($100 I think).
