PlatinumGames Wants Xbox To Acquire Them + PlayStation Censorship | Defining Duke Episode 59

It's a jumbled mess of news this week. Xbox's messaging continues to puzzle the Dukes as Phil Spencer has claimed he wants games like Starfield to be the most played Todd Howard game yet it has the most walls surrounding it. We see "popular Activision Blizzard titles" are remaining multi-platform, so the situation for Bethesda is different. Will this energy be maintained in future deals? That will be most telling and it's possible that Microsoft has a potential candidate. PlatinumGames can't help but want to work with Xbox as it has been two weeks straight of them making headlines with their desires. Last week, it was a Scalebound revival. Now? It's the desire to be acquired. Furthermore, PlayStation is at the center of another "censorship" discussion. This time, the subject is Martha Is Dead which is modifying content and thus delaying the physical release of the indie developer LKA's game. Great episode and I have to echo on Mattys thoughts on Platinum. They can make amazing games but they kinda got themselves in their current situation. And while the mess with Scalebound did lay on MS’s lap, Platinum weren’t no angels either. If MS wants to make a statement about wanting Japanese games, they are a perfect domino to knock over and one of the few they could get right now during the Activison stuff too without setting off regulators.

Man, my back log is insane, I didn't play games besides sports games when I was younger so I'm trying to play games I missed in the ps3, 360 era, playing games I missed in the ps4, xbox 1 era cause of university, games I'm missing now because I was addressing my back log. The only positive is that I get games cheaper cause I rarely play new games. It's a struggle, one I love cause I'm playing great games but it is a MAJOR struggle. Great episode, keep it coming.

I think Xbox should acquire Platinum Studios. It could also possibly strengthen their bond with Nintendo in the Japanese market, and IMO I think Certain Affinity might be reworking ScaleBound.

Hey Matty I just wanted to speak up about a recent episode of DD. You mentioned viewership dropping after Carrock* left but I would like to just say that personally it brought me back. I don't want you to just grab someone that will make your numbers big if that person is not a good fit. Ultimately the decision is yours to make but just wanted to offer up the other side that just because numbers went down doesn't mean your show is worse off. I think it improved 10 fold.

I'm sorry to hear that there was a drop when Cog joined, and it bummed you out sir. For what it is worth I became a regular listener when Cog joined. I like the chemistry of the show a lot better with you two.

Hey Dukes, in regards to Xbox needing more shows like Nintendo Directs. I want to hear more about what’s going on just like everyone else. But I’d encourage you to go back to Matty’s video on Gamescom 2021. Matty was less than impressed. “It was something” I actually enjoyed it. But the issue is one of expectations. Rarely does Nintendo come out of their directs pleasing everyone. People are always disappointed by not seeing their games or seeing genres they don’t love. Fans and content creators are so hard to please, it just feels like the better approach is one or two big preview events and then have dedicated videos leading up to launch like they did for Forza Horizon 5. So, you are on record of wanting more shows. How does Xbox keep expectations in check and not generating negative feedback? Or is this a case when less is more?

Ditto, Mike. No shade to old hosts but I love Cog on this show and the chemistry between him and Matty. It's very clear that Cog wants to be there and just seems to enjoy every single DD and DDU episode.

I wrote this on YT but thought I’d post here too…. Matty, I’ve been listening to this show since you launched it and I have to say, you’ve been KILLING IT from day 1. Cog is undoubtably great, karak was cool but you don’t get enough credit for steering this ship, the effort you put into writing and prepping the show shows in its quality and you should be proud. This is the best Xbox podcast bar none and that level of quality sustained will no doubt drive those numbers higher than they ever were. Don’t rush the third chair, king is a beast for sure but you guys do it your way, we trust you. Peace.
