Shovel Knight | KnockBack: The Retro and Nostalgia Podcast Episode 204

You may not be familiar with the concept of Shovelry, but veterans of 2014's smash-hit indie darling Shovel Knight will know all about it. Kickstarted nearly a decade ago by a new team called Yacht Club Games and launched to massive commercial and critical success, Shovel Knight is an ode to the NES era, taking liberal amounts of inspiration from the likes of DuckTales, Mega Man, Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden, Faxanadu, Zelda II, Super Mario Bros. 3, and more. Yet, it's also a adventure that can act as an excellent gateway for younger players into the days of yore. Shovel Knight is one of the greatest old-school-style romps ever crafted, full stop, and we're thrilled to talk about it on KnockBack. Check out our merch store at http://LastStandMedia.Shop A new episode of KnockBack launches each Monday morning. Great episode. It's inspired me to give it a bash again (haven't played it in a few years) and I've beat a few stages fairly fast. Haven't touched any of the dlc before and it's nice that it's just been included automatically!!

Yesssssss One of my fav games of the last decade!

If Koei Tecmo was ever cool with it, and you had the money for it, Lillymo should definitely do a Ninja Gaiden game.

It would have been hilarious if you started off with: (in a serious tone) "Hi Vince, mind if I call you Vinnie?" As an ice breaker 😆

Really enjoyed this episode. Never been much of a retro player, but after hearing this I purchased Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove. It immediately made me think of Rastan and Psycho Fox on the SEGA Master System, which, aside from Alex Kidd (built in) and the secret Snail Trail game, were the first two 8 bit games I owned.

My first ever game was Centipede on the Atari 2600 in the very early 80s, but as Nintendo were not as big here in the UK, the MS was the console that brought me into gaming.

What I love about Shovel Knight is how it feels like the perfecting of 8-bit gaming conventions wrapped into a single package. It's a love letter, a museum, and a blueprint. When someday in the future I want to my daughter the best of classic game ideas, we have some of the originals, but this game is a polished all-in-one interactive diorama of the greatest hits of that era :)

Very cool I always liked Shovel Knight but I wasn't aware of your history with this game and I find that info very interesting
