You may not be familiar with the concept of Shovelry, but veterans of 2014's smash-hit indie darling Shovel Knight will know all about it. Kickstarted nearly a decade ago by a new team called Yacht Club Games and launched to massive commercial and critical success, Shovel Knight is an ode to the NES era, taking liberal amounts of inspiration from the likes of DuckTales, Mega Man, Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden, Faxanadu, Zelda II, Super Mario Bros. 3, and more. Yet, it's also a adventure that can act as an excellent gateway for younger players into the days of yore. Shovel Knight is one of the greatest old-school-style romps ever crafted, full stop, and we're thrilled to talk about it on KnockBack.

Unexpected episode topic! One of my absolute favorite games in the last decade.

Love SMW and SMB3… but I won’t stand for the SMW2 slander. I’ll admit, it’s not quite as fun for me when I’ve returned to it, mainly due to it not being as challenging as I’d like today. I think the hand drawn visuals and music are great. The game is so creative, to this day has some very interesting mechanics. It has some of my favorite representations of signature Mario universe characters and villains. Ultimately I think this game introduced a lot of the more kid friendly and warm attributes to the Mario franchise we see to this day. Is it as good as SMW1 in retrospect? Probably not, but how many games are. Anyways…Great shovel Knight discussion!

Surprised to see this release the day I began revisiting Shovel Knight. Great episode, great game.

Alone in the Snark

I'm guessing most people don't know that the DLC character quests were chosen by Kickstarter backers out of all the bosses. (Including the Enchantress, how she didn't win is beyond my comprehension.) Regardless, probably not something Yacht Club will repeat in the future.

I really hope not. As cool as it was to receive those big bites of DLC, I would have much rather just had a robust sequel. None of the DLC characters felt as satisfying or fun to play as Shovel Knight himself, imo.
