Is PlayStation 5 Living Up To Its Promise? | Sacred Symbols+ Episode 140

A few days ago, the publication Wired quietly published a 15 minute-long video starring Mark Cerny -- the lead architect of the PS5, as well as PS4 and Vita -- going over the various features of PlayStation 5, and how things have played out for the console over its first 365 days on the market. It's a really fascinating watch, invoking the beloved Mark Cerny Power Hour from 2020, and while there's no new information in the video, per se, it still readily reminds us of what PS5 has done, can do, and will do. To go over Cerny's video in more granular detail and talk about PlayStation 5's SSD, CPU and GPU, DualSense, and more -- and how all of it has or hasn't lived up to its promise after year one -- I (Colin!) invited Tom from Moore's Law Is Dead to +. The load times are snappy. Should they be snappier? The resolutions are crisp and the framerates are fast. Should they be crisper and faster? Is DualSense DualSensy enough? Let's chat.

Tom just summarized PERFECTLY why I love to game on my Consoles. I love both my Playstation 5 and my Xbox Series X, equally.

Cool idea to bring back Tom for a tech retrospective, love the tech talk. Half way through and I'm enjoying this episode a lot.

I love these tech focused episodes, thanks dude.

They're both incredible consoles. I would love to dive more into the XBOX's unique advantages, too. But this is a PlayStation podcast, so I usually end up talking more about that - although, still not enough haha. The Co-Processors (for example) in the PS5 are criminally under-represented in their importance to the PS5's performance.

They are so different from each other and that's a very GOOD thing to me. When I say I love them equally, I mean each one for very different reasons. My Xbox Series X for my 3rd party games such as Witcher Wild Hunt, Skyrim, AC Odyssey and so on and my PS5 for its wonderful unique games like God of War, Horizon Forbidden West and the recent Ratchet and Clank. I hope that makes sense to you. Thanks for responding to me sir.

Am I crazy or is the outro music mixed a bit differently now? The bass seems a bit more pronounced, sounds great. :-D

I'm technologically illiterate too even though I don't like to admit, but this is why this is the only Patreon or creator content I sub to. Fantastic job guys, keep it up!

Good episode Moore law weird dig at indie games when talking about game pass was weird and unnecessary though.

The talk of Call of Duty on the Wii really brought me back. 13 year old me only had a Wii for a while since the PS3 was so god damn expensive and all I wanted to do was play COD. Those ports are hysertically awful, you should honestly check it out some time. The game he was thinking of was World at War, which cut the plane and tank missions, nazi zombies, half the game modes, and all tank maps from the game. My favorite though, was it cut the "signal flare" AKA WWII flash grenade because the wii couldn't do any lighting effects for it to work!

Tom is easily one of my favorite guests. Up there with Hoeg for sure.
