Poltergeist | KnockBack: The Retro and Nostalgia Podcast Episode 195

1982's Poltergeist is a fascinating film to examine. It's a Steven Spielberg horror production that also wasn't, a movie with what was essentially a 'shadow director,' allowing Spielberg to navigate around contractual issues with ET, which he (also) directed, and which came to theaters at nearly the same time. But production curiosities aside, Poltergeist is akin to the collision of two Spielberg pictures -- Jaws and The Goonies -- a sometimes dire and scary while at other times upbeat and even funny adventure about a house built on an old graveyard... and the consequences therein. Is the house clean? Well, not exactly. Yet, the TV beckons... and so does this episode of KnockBack. Relate so much with the comment on certain VHS covers taking on a mystique & sticking with you as a kid. Many turned out to not quite live up to the box art but that’s definitely a quirk exclusive to us in that generation.

It's something only a sliver of people will have ever understood... a little mystical element to our upbringing. =)

To me, this was a classic and want to show my fiancé (who has never seen the movie) but she has no interest

“When Satan is on the scene, you know shit is serious,” - Dagan M. Put that on a knockback shirt lol. Great episode as always. This movie scared the shit out of me as well. I didn’t get to see it till the late 90s even in Puerto Rico the rumors about the movie being cursed spread like wildfire due to the deaths of the cast members later on

I was born in 84. I never watched this movie for that reason Colin mentioned: just seeing the VHS box at the video store scared me enough to walk away from it. 37 years later, still haven't watched it haha Maybe I should now, I should be safe now :P

Fernando

What's that movie/show about people killing themselves to go to the after life? I did a google search and only found that Ricky Gervais drama/comedy, some 2021 romantic comedy and some documentary. Is it really Netflix content?

Kenneth Oms

Colin, the series you’re thinking of is actually a movie called The Discovery

I picture Dagan's 5th-grade club as an IRL version of The Tunnel Snakes from Fallout 3. No doubt that journal will be a goldmine for months to come.

We happen to watch this for Halloween this year and my girlfriend pointed out how it was refreshing that the everyone believes everyone, it’s happening. The woman is not hysterical everyone was her team. Good ep cheers guys.
