Over in Japan, Konami is holding a tantalizing contest: Developers can choose from select Konami IP and pitch the publisher on new projects, with potential funding waiting for them on the other side. This raises tantalizing possibilities for the dormant Japanese powerhouse, since they happen to own some of gaming's most beloved licenses, and today's + is dedicated to the what-ifs. Joining me (Colin!) is Ains Bowden, founder and EIC of Seasoned Gaming and a very experienced old-school gamer, just like yours truly. Together, we go through seven games Konami can revive, along with what those games may look like, and -- perhaps most interestingly -- who may make them.

Seriously if anyone fucks up metal gear solid again I am done with Konami.

Josef Barker

I'd rather play remasters or remakes of the old games than anything new without Kojima.

I may be in the minority here, and I really hope this game was mentioned in the episode, but the first game I think about when I see that Konami sign is Sunset Riders.

The creators of Suikoden are actually making a new JRPG called Eiyuden Chronicle. I’m not sure if Konami is involved though.

I'm only 10min in but I'm enjoying what Mr.Bowden is saying so far. "Hire him Colin" isn't that what everyone says nowadays? 😆 Edit: 9/10. Really enjoyed this episode. The only thing I noticed was your mic audio was a bit too loud compared to Bowden's. Maybe it was my headphones. Either way it would be awesome to have him back. Thank you and goodbye😘

Great episode! I have to say that if Metal Gear was to come back in a refreshed way by Kojima, it would be awesome if he puts the “strand genre” onto it. People made fun of him when he said he created a new genre but I actually think he’s right. The strand genre he’s talking about is the game being connected to the internet and other players affecting your world in your game in some way. For example, in Death Stranding if you are halfway into building a road, you can log off and come back at another date and that road will be finished because another player finished it on their game. Now imagine that idea being put into a game like Metal Gear or any other game for that matter. 🤔 it definitely sounds very interesting to me. Keep it up LSM!

I always thought the natural progression for Metal Gear was remaking the NES games on a modern engine… to complete the circle. Maybe one where you play as Big Boss, with this intruder. Then another where you play as Snake.

Craig Mcguire

I don't really follow Ains but I know of him and have seen some of his content, always came across like a very genuine and likable chap, definitley came across very well here. Very good episode Colin you've had a real good run of quality guests touching on interesting topics of late.

Could be cool. I have an affinity for the NES Metal Gear port, and I know Dagan feels the same.

It amazes me we still can't get the early suikodens on mobile. Square has given me the opportunity to get so many of the old ff, but konami won't do the same. Suikoden 2 is maybe my fav rpg of all time. Luca Blight is one of the most evil villains in rpgs I've ever seen. Hated him.

Konami's clearly starting to care more about their legacy games... so don't be surprised for them to reemerge.

Brandon Soto

Shoutout to the Ninja Turtles Konami games. Hope that’s the next collection they make. Turtles in Time is one of my all-time favorites.

Shaun Wilkinson

This was great. Another fantastic guest, I'd love to hear from him again in the future.

With as narrative focused as Metal Gear is, I say have Naughty Dog take it. But instead of Kojimas take on American politics and militarism, maybe flip it and have it be against a highly technologically advanced Japan against a rapidly miltarized world? Tlou2 already has so much stealth gameplay tied into the story, I think they'd be able to make a fresh take on it. Re: Castlevania: give it to Vanillaware. Framework of SOTN, but just in their art style. Story doesn't have to be as insane as 13 sentinels, but multiple protags/not getting the whole story on first playthrough would be awesome. Kinda like mashing up Vanillaware last several games but with a Castlevania coat of paint.

LastStandMedia

I would love to see much less American-centric storytelling overall. I've been beating that drum for years. I'd like a look at some other places! =D

Absolutely great episode. Great and very knowledgeable guest!

Silent hill would be great with remedy in my opinion.Alan wake had an amazingly uneasy atmosphere and a nice combat system.

Greg Hommel

This was a great conversation. I really like the tactic of talking to as many interesting people as possible. I have never heard of this guy but I really enjoyed the back and forth. The guy from Techland was a high point as well. Keep it up. Those sacred symbols mean so much more than PlayStation.

shout out to colin for mentioning killswitch <3 i dont think its well known and i was too young to finish it but that was a neat game

Giovanni D'Amico

Awesome episode. Ains was really well-spoken and well-prepared, and this was a really natural and interesting conversation. Would really love to see him back. Could totally see him contributing really strongly on a spoilercast (or more retro-related stuff?). Great work as always.

Gotta give a shout out to Policenauts. It's a hidden gem because it was never officially localized and takes some leg work to play it in English through ROM patches or downloading a pre-patched .ISO (which is what I did), but the game itself is very good and has a great story and soundtrack. It's what Kojima wrote right before MGS, and I don't know if I'd ever want a new iteration without Kojima, but the world has many other interesting stories that could be told, I'd love to see it continued in some form.

Bart Van Geert

Great guest, easy to listen to. Good episode, keep it up!
