Sleepless in Burbank | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 167

It's been well over a year, but finally -- finally! -- Sony has given us some new, much-needed details concerning their upcoming slate of PlayStation 5 games. Word came by way of a tight, 40 minute presentation, and perhaps the biggest news of all was that Sony-owned developer Insomniac, already responsible for two PS5 games, will be delivering two more by 2023. First off, is Insomniac now Sony's uncontested crown jewel studio? And how could they possibly be working at such a rapid clip? We get into all of that, plus all of the other reveals and details from the Showcase, including a PS5 KOTOR remake, Square Enix's Forspoken, cross-gen exclusives God of War: Ragnarok and Gran Turismo 7, and more. We also delve into the week's other news, including the acquisition of a brand-new first party team in Firesprite, fixing Sony's inane game pricing scheme with Horizon: Forbidden West, the PlayStation debut of Alan Wake, and so much more. Then, we dive into some listener inquiries. What indie studios are impressing us most right now? Would we rather 4K resolution at 60 frames or 1080p at 120 frames? Could Parappa the Rapper be a good multiverse IP for Sony to explore? Did Colin sleep without any underwear on when he stayed at Dustin's? I’ve always been a big Marvel fan, I’ve played pretty much every Marvel console game under the sun (even Marvel Imperfects!) so I guess take my opinion with a grain of salt but… I love SE’s Avengers game. I’m over 150 hours into it and that’s very unusual for me. I just got my friend into it and he was pretty surprised by just how fun it is because he’s heard so many people talk shit. It definitely needs a lot of work, the gear/loot sucks but I’m also not a big loot driven player. But I’m really like the live service aspect of it. It feels like a comic book series that I get to continue following and seeing how the story unfolds with new characters. I’d recommend it to anyone who would enjoy playing as those characters because they are a blast to play.

HOT TAKE! lol I'm just joking with ya. Glad your having fun mate.

Hose A Contra Razz

That Spider-Man teaser you missed the Kraven the hunter voice, so technically 2 main villains

Hose A Contra Razz

Quick question apparently most people haven’t read the Texas bill and are just regurgitating lies from the social media and media. No such things as bounties and it’s very specific on who can sue. Its also against the person doing the performing the termination not the mother. And no the rapist can’t sue to stop an abortion. Did you guys actually read the bill or took someone’s word for it? Due Diligence please. Also 8 abortion Doctors have been murdered since 1977, tragic but not common

Fourth dimentional hypercube

About the uncharted 4 remaster, I believe it’s being done by Iron Galaxy which I was kind of surprised by as you’d think it would have been done by Nixxes.

MJ SKA BOI

V E N O M I hope we get a gameplay sequence of chasing venom through the city as a throwback to Spider-Man on the original PS. Also, V E N O M

Matthew Skora

I totally didn’t even think to check Patreon for a questions thread right after the show, whoops! But is anybody else concerned at all about Kena: Bridge of Spirits? I thought it was a 100% lock to get a gameplay trailer or something for the game since its release is imminent. This was going to be one of those games I had been planning on pre-ordering a couple days before launch just to get it downloaded on my PS5, but now I’m hesitant.

Shawn Yorn

Colin, you've been very adamant about not participating in the "voting with your wallet" on lots of "controversial" games BUT you're going to skip an incredible game from Schafer and that dev team because their social media person blocked you? I'm so confused. :/ Amazing episode as always though! @MJ - he absolutely does. I'm saying that he DOESNT participate in this. He's been very adamant about not participating in the "vote with your wallet" mindset for the most part. Which is fine but seems strange in this context.

MJ SKA BOI

Wait a minute, I thought that "vote with your wallet" is exactly what Colin likes to say

Domenico Smarto

I’m also confused on people wondering if this is over the TX bill or him being pro-life. It’s both if you identify as pro-life your going to support pro life legislation. If you don’t your one of those people who say your personally pro life but your actually politically pro-choice.

Michael Thew

I’m sorry but if you approve of planned parenthood, then you approve of Margaret Sanger, founder of planned parenthood, selective breeding and the systematic killing of children that don’t get to live just because they are mentally deficient or poor of any race. It don’t get much more nazi than that. Sorry if people have to live with their decisions, no worries you can still be selfish and your life ain’t over yet, just send the kid to a foster home. It’s better than killing a child. Also the left likes to bring up bounties and snitching, they sure had no problem in New York City when liberals up and down their local government introduced bounties on idling cars.

NickBLeaveIt

Part of what historically has made PlayStation special is that, you went to Xbox for your big boy shooty shooties, you went to Nintendo for your kid friendly Marios, and PlayStation had the whole kit and caboodle. What made the June 2020 event so great was seeing Ratchet, Sackboy, and Astro, and look how Kena, Bugsnax, and Little Devil Inside really stuck out, but you still had Returnal, Demon's Souls, Resident Evil: Village, etc. One lesser criticism of E3 2018 was that most of the games shown were dark, the only colorful game being Trover Saves the Universe. The same was true of the September 2020 showcase, "dark game dark game dark game Fortnite dark game". Tchia was WELCOME AND A FUCKING HALF, and it sucks that for a hot second the trailer had so many dislikes.

is it confirmed Venom is not playable? they showed his logo just like morales' and parker's

brody_low

Totally just noticed Chris is using mattys studio

I have to say, as a new (technically returning, from the very beginning/pre-Sacred Symbols days) patron, I appreciate how quickly this went up. Coupled with all the other perks, I already feel great about my patronage. Anyway, time to tune in.

Anonymous

I don't feel that supporting the bill means your a bad person but like I had said how can u say your for small government but want the government to impose your Christian beliefs on other people 6 weeks is not intelligent life 8m for small government in every way this is a area where the republican party is hypocritical and I vote republican but I'm a true libertarian

LastStandMedia

It never made much sense to me, how it's conservative to insert yourself into another person's live. Ah well.

Kaleb

I knew Project Eve wasn't a Japanese game because of the design of the protagonist. She has a very generic mobile game idol look to her. It completely turned me off even though the gameplay looked interesting enough.

Matt Wiles

When you say PC owners don’t have to pay for game upgrades, I don’t think PC vs console can be comparable. PS4 and PS5 are two completely different consoles. You wouldn’t see Nintendo you the option of upgrading your Wii U game to Switch, for free. You wouldn’t even see them doing it for £/$30. So why should Sony give us the PS5 version for free? Surely there’s extra costs to make it work better on PS5. I’m more than happy to pay some money for an upgrade from PS4 to PS5. Bizarre comparison to PC, and I don’t agree, that’s all.

Anonymous

Did i miss something? Why does everybody cream themselves at the mention of venom? I’m not especially familiar with the comics, but the Venom movie is absolutely atrocious and i cannot see the appeal of this character no matter how hard i try

Daniel Vacura

It is because of the Spider-Man 90s animated TV show honestly which is a bit melodramatic at times and Venom just looks cool along with getting to play as Spider-Man in the iconic black suit. If the first time you ever saw Venom or were made aware of him was the Venom movie, then that is NOT a good interpretation. Spider-Man 3 is much closer to the comics, but it’s not a very good version of the story either with the execution. In the 90s animated TV show which was fairly close to the comics and later the fantastic Spectacular Spider-Man TV show, the symbiote goes onto Peter first. It makes him do more brutal things where the symbiote loves Peter. However, Peter realizes he needs to get rid of it at a certain point since he is taking things too far with the symbiote trying to take him over. It influences him too much where he thinks he killed it, but it lands on Eddie Brock who becomes Venom. Peter screwed over Eddie so Eddie gives himself over to the suit completely which Peter wouldn’t do. It’s why he gets the white spider as Venom since it was on Spider-Man first. Eddie and Peter parallel each other with their lives and eventually Venom becomes an anti-hero. He’s not meant to be a goofy character. Eddie is like Peter’s big brother as they grew up together in the Spectacular Spider-Man TV show so it’s much more impactful when Eddie becomes Venom since they were so close which was a new interpretation at the time. This version is taking notes instead from the Ultimate version where it was not an alien symbiote. That’s teased with Harry getting it instead in the games. It was a suit designed to cure cancer where Eddie’s and Peter’s fathers created it and it gets out of control. They knew each other as kids, but weren’t that close compared to the Spectacular Spider-Man show. With Harry being Venom instead, it will be more impactful when Peter faces off against him. The conflict matters more when it’s Peter’s best friend becoming Venom in this context.

Jacob Alexander Irvine

TL;DR Venom is a fan favorite character who actually has an interesting relationship with Spiderman but has been poorly portrayed on screen in mainstream media.

Daniel Vacura

That’s not true though, Jacob. The 90s animated show and Spectacular Spider-Man were both very popular shows that would count as mainstream media. Now they weren’t movies, but it doesn’t change the fact that the character was portrayed really well in those shows. The 90s animated show is the most popular version at this point honestly even though the Spectacular Spider-Man version is better because Eddie has more of a connection to Peter where it’s much more developed. Compared to “The Alien Costume” arc in the 90s show which was 3 episodes and Peter has the symbiote for 2 episodes, Spectacular Spider-Man is A LOT more fleshed out. He has the symbiote for 3 episodes and Uncle Ben in his mind helps him overcome it. The best version of Eddie Brock is in Spectacular Spider-Man who is in the show as a big brother figure from the beginning compared to debuting when the symbiote shows up like in the 90s show. Eddie in the comics didn’t become that interesting until much later in the comics where he was a fairly generic character for a long time.

Matthew Cooper

As for 4k/60 or 1080p/120, in general I prefer 4k/60. The difference between 60 and 120 frames is much more subtle than the jump from 30 to 60 frames. In some games I really can't even see the difference between 60 and 120. But there some games that are an exception to that, like Tony Hawk, Doom Eternal, Call of Duty... 4k/60 is still perfectly good for those, but they are fast paced or twitchy enough to benefit nicely from 120 frames.

LastStandMedia

I wonder if I'd notice. I don't think I've ever even been exposed to faster than 60 frames.

Shane Boyle

As someone who has played Avengers on and off since release, the cadence of play is pretty much as Dustin summed up. I jump in for new content, level whatever hero has been added to the cap, and then bail again. As a live service game, it completely fails on almost every level. Boring loot, lack of engaging end game content and lazy mission design all hold it back. The only saving grace it has, is that Crystal Dynamics nail the actual heroes themselves incredibly well, with each being fun to play as and experiment with on that grind to the level cap, hence why I always jump back in to check out the new characters and their kits. I'm genuinely surprised that it got the green light for another year of content, in all honesty. The game's entire commercial model is based on the sale of in-game cosmetics, which I struggle to believe is sustainable for them long term as such a model, I would have thought, would depend on a huge degree of player retention in order to remain profitable. Maybe the numbers on console tell a different story to the Steam numbers. Either way I'd love to know more as this game getting a second year of content is one of the more bizzare stories I've seen this year.

LastStandMedia

I'm surprised, too, but the best way to financial salvation for this game (or at least lessening the massive loss they took) is by taking the longview.

The Eclectic Gamer

Happy to hear Colin beating the PlayStation drum…I did dabble in Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for the promotional $1 monthly fee… I played and finished 12 minutes Psychonauts 2 and the artful escape and enjoyed all three. I will now have to wait another 6-12 months to play something exclusive.4

flytroop

You should have Raycevick feature in the Gran Turismo spoilercast

Raul Hernandez

Great episode like always guys. Gran Turismo is, in my opinion, still a highly anticipated game. I play both Forza and Gran Turismo (back in the day, Need for Speed and PGR) and for lack of a better comparison, GT is like a Rolex and Forza is like a super nice Casio. Forza lacks the elegance that GT games bring to racing games. I don’t fault Polyphony for taking so long to release their games.

LastStandMedia

I just don't have that poverty mentality, for lack of a better term. I don't need lots of games. Just good ones.

Tony Rivera

"I was looking through my trophies, as I often do.. as I like to regale myself.." My God, Colin.. I almost spit out my margarita when I heard you say this, I was laughing so hard. I love you bro. LOL

easelgames

As I huge GT fan I'm praying it does great. Because if it doesn't... well then Forza will be the only game in the future using a decent amount of Licensed cars. Licensing is INCREABLY expensive, and just not something an indie team or any third party like even Ubisoft can afford to do on a large scale. Because of this it really takes the "big players" to be able to do this. And if Sony backs out.. Well then it's forza and nothing else. Speaking of which FM7 gets delisted this year, and it's less then 4 years old. FOUR. Microsoft would be the only company able to afford to burn the cash for the Licenses, and then every four years the game will disappear. That is not a future of racing, heck gaming, that I want to be a part of.
