It's been well over a year, but finally -- finally! -- Sony has given us some new, much-needed details concerning their upcoming slate of PlayStation 5 games. Word came by way of a tight, 40 minute presentation, and perhaps the biggest news of all was that Sony-owned developer Insomniac, already responsible for two PS5 games, will be delivering two more by 2023. First off, is Insomniac now Sony's uncontested crown jewel studio? And how could they possibly be working at such a rapid clip? We get into all of that, plus all of the other reveals and details from the Showcase, including a PS5 KOTOR remake, Square Enix's Forspoken, cross-gen exclusives God of War: Ragnarok and Gran Turismo 7, and more. We also delve into the week's other news, including the acquisition of a brand-new first party team in Firesprite, fixing Sony's inane game pricing scheme with Horizon: Forbidden West, the PlayStation debut of Alan Wake, and so much more. Then, we dive into some listener inquiries. What indie studios are impressing us most right now? Would we rather 4K resolution at 60 frames or 1080p at 120 frames? Could Parappa the Rapper be a good multiverse IP for Sony to explore? Did Colin sleep without any underwear on when he stayed at Dustin's?

A very whelming showcase. Was bored to tears watching it, even God of War looked only "fine" to me. The only upside to this event is I now get to listen to this long podcast, which I'm sure I'll enjoy much more than the PlayStation showing.

Josef Barker

Better settle in for this podcast 4 hours!

Anonymous

It might sound like I'm a psycho but I just hope Wolverine has blood, gore and dismemberment.

Dave Ramos

To Dustin or Ben, or whomever edited the audio version this late: thank you!

Greg McDonald

As Colin would say, a 4-hour Rogan banger I can chew on through the week

Asique Alam

Chris I hate to break it to you but im one of those people that has experienced the pain of my dick popping out and getting caught on the zipper, it was not a happy experience my friend. I have gone zipper less since.

Jack Doheny

Hi Colin just a correction on Ireland's abortion stance, its 66 percent pro choice and 34 percent pro life. We had a referendum in 2018 to legalize abortion and it passed. just wanted you to know thanks for the show and it was a good discussion.

Joshua Brown

Great showcase for me. Still only planning on upgrading to a PS5 once a slim model or pro comes out but man that Kotor remake is tempting. Double dipping on Uncharted though damn that didn’t taste right.

Hi, CDC. Greetings from Brazil (permission granted to do the voice from SF announcer). I would like your opinion on something that I find very interesting from the outside: the number of game journalists writing games of all sizes in the past few years. More interestingly, some of them are either acquaintances or close friends of yours, such as: Ryan Clements (Life is Strange), Alanah Pearce (GoW Ragnarok), Mitch Dyer (SW Battlefront 2, Gotham Knights), Alexa Ray Corriea (CoD Vanguard), Gary Whitta (Walking Dead, Forspoken), our own ColinM (Lilymo) and, to a broader extent, Greg Kasavin (SuperGiant). Do you think this is a trend that will increase or maybe you just see here or there and what do you think this background can bring to this job in gaming? Would love to hear your inputs. Side note: the Minority Report is in good hands from Kevin to Chris. You keep pounding the chicken. Cheers.

GameSimp

I didn’t even watch the event, because 1. I didn’t have time 2. I knew this week’s Sacred Symbols would be juicer going in blind

D'Ante Almo

Insomniac are some machines!! I never expected a new game and Spider-man 2.

Tonys_Always_Write

In reference to Colin sentimental comment on having people and realizing he's a part of something: I just want to say that the feeling is mutual, and that first CLS, and now LSM, has provided that feeling for many of us in the online sphere. As a libertarian since 2012 I have increasingly found I have no place online because of the way politics and Wokeness have invaded every aspect of internet culture. I have zero issues being friends with anyone as long as they don't treat me less than for my beliefs, but much of the internet does not act that way. The community you guys have built here is one of the most understanding and open in throughout the internet. It's only getting better too. Kudos for all you do, and especially the things you are pushing. That Phillip Mucin video proves beyond a shadow of a doubt the level of maturity you hold compared to the rest of the juvenile school yard clique-based internet... Haha 😂 clique-based. Thank you!

Alan Hayden

Insomniac is astounding. In the time ND has announced and released TLOU2, Insomniac has announced 5 top shelf games and released 3. I think I prefer this cycle of multiple top games over 5-6 years as opposed to a similar development time over a 'bigger' more story driven title. Great acquisition! They are Sony's best studio now in my mind.

Dom posa

Infamous and resistance collections will never come

Oliver Johnson

I’m very surprised to hear how positive you all are for Spider-Man 2 potentially having co-op. I can’t think of a single time where forced co-op on what should be a single player game has ever been good. I really hope they just come up with a cool mechanic to play as both of them rather than forcing 60% (or more) to always have a dumb AI teammate running around

Kenneth Oms

I agree with Dustin on insomniac and wolverine. Sony is just pushing out third person adventure games which is fine, but how great would it have been if insomniac announced spider man 2 and a resistance remaster or something. Jaffe also pointed this out that PlayStation right now feels like more of the same and they need genre variety.

Chris

I like Avengers, I hop in a couple times per week to check vendors and do some dailies or weeklies. The game still needs work, and the gear grind isn't rewarding enough because it's too RNG-based. That said, they have done an impressive job of making all of the characters really fun to play as, and that is the game's greatest achievement. They do a great job of making you feel like Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Black Panther, etc, and somehow even make Hawkeye fun to play as. As Marvel movies get back on schedule toward the end of the year, I think this game will benefit immensely, don't count it out just yet

Michael Thew

All I gotta say is winning an optical war doesn’t feed Sony’s employees, especially when Sony is wiping the floor again with XBone with their current business plan. I guess it seems that those that think they are entitled to everything being free or cheap opinion is vastly overrated.

james o halloran

Comments like this are a gross over simplification of the current situation. Why can't we talk about games as adults.

Shaun Wilkinson

Forza is definitely NOT better than Gran Turismo. They are very different games but Gran Turismo will always have that special something that you’ll only get from Polyphony. I’m so hyped for GT7.

Anonymous

My one worry is burnout. Ghost of tushima, hzd, uncharted. The combat in these game feel very different. However a lot of the side content like climbing, story, etc are starting to blur to me.

Anonymous

Hey Colin. I know we say separate the art from the artist. However how can we separate the art from the industry? I’m finding it hard to get excited about games sometimes cause the western industry and companies are getting really toxic. To the point of I almost feel bad for funding people who hate me just cause I’m not a extreme leftist.

Dav9834

Totally off topic, sorry, and not sure it was brought up, but apparently some deep diving into the individual components with delicate sensors shows the new ps5 runs the soc cooler. https://www.tomshardware.com/news/new-ps5-revision-thermals-tested

David P

No Infamous or Resistance. Only Marvel. Wonder what other first party studios are just making more Marvel now?

Joe Perez

10 minutes in and I am rolling! I also instinctively checked my fly 😂

Beau

Bit the bullet this week and paid resale for a PS5 like the guy who wrote in. Just got tired of dealing with this shit, have the income for it and the news about more supply issues got to me.

WalknTalknStvnHawkn

Colin, your little talk about StubHub was too real. Spent $400 on Saints tickets a few years ago. 43-yard line, 12 rows behind the Saints bench. They clinched the 1 seed the weak prior to the game I went to. I ended up spending $400 to watch backups. Lmao 😂

MJ SKA BOI

That Wolverine tease. Maybe the CCP is right about video games being spiritual opium.

Ryan Harvey

Dustin - first it was jaguar.. Now SeaGALL? hahaha 😂

LastStandMedia

Hey Alex! If this is for the show, be sure to use the weekly threads for Sacred that post on Wednesdays.

LastStandMedia

It's a logical next-step. I won't mind it at all so long as it's not forced, and it won't be.

Anonymous

That was me. I have a career and a marriage and lots of shit to do, I simply do not have time to sit on the computer all day refreshing 7 tabs hoping to find one in stock. Glad you were able to get one friend!

LastStandMedia

I don't know that there's anything wrong with that, and there are certain lines I won't personally cross. As I said on the show, if someone at a company is going to take aim at me so specifically as to block me on their corporate account, I'm glad speaking with my wallet. =)

John Pliskin

Idk conference was ok. But I just don’t think Sony will be able to compete with MSs upcoming games. Sony has no games with staying power. No multiplayer no RPGs. Those are the games that hook people. Sony is mainly known for 1 n done titles and this show was FULL of them.

Anonymous

Colin, Was it the milkman at the door?

Owen

Gibson literally said “Proud of #USSupremeCourt affirming the Texas law banning…” he specifically starts his tweet praising the affirmation of this law. So I think it’s very easy to know he was supporting this law.

Angel DeJesus

Hey Colin, just want to give my 2 cents on the tripwire CEO. I am prochoice, but I have no problem with prolife people just for being prolife, I have friends who have prolife. My issue is him supporting the law, which I don't think he's even researched. He said he was glad it had been affirmed by the Supreme Court, which tells me he supports it. Also, it doesn't take much governmental knowledge to know that it would take some time to even get to the Supreme Court. If he hasn't researched the law, he shouldn't make a comment to support it. It's a terrible law, that doesn't have a rape exemption, which is ridiculous.

Angel DeJesus

Let me also say, I hope he does come on with you. I know that you will have him clarify his stance, and explain how he could support the parts of the bill.

Chris

For this Tripwire guy, I mean you can talk to who you want, but personally I don't care to hear from him. I'm not a fan of cancel culture, but this is different. A middle aged man and CEO of a company expressing his approval of abortion laws is what I'd consider punching down, it doesn't help that the law is draconian and from an entirely different state. Then add in the fact that without his business he'd get no attention at all, so he basically spent their reputation to dunk on a bunch of poor people without provocation. That lack of maturity makes him unfit to be a leader, and his employees and business partners responded accordingly.

Chris

No, I support everyone's right to do what they feel is right. I just don't see how it's the government's decision when the topic is so complex. Should a woman be required to give 9 months of her life, with all the pain, the restrictions, that come with pregnancy, when it is the product of something as traumatic as rape? In a situation where the woman will die? In a situation of a horrible genetic disease in the unborn child that will kill them in infancy? These are decisions to be made by a woman and her doctor. And for all: if they deserve a pass, why is that child's life less valuable? Ideals are nice, and I doubt very many people are enthusiastic about an abortion. Having one catch-all law that is going to make it right for every single situation is impossible. And I mention poor people because they will be the only ones affected. Any with extra money and health insurance can simply buy a plane ticket

Anonymous

I don’t usually see comments as terrible as that last one left in this community and it’s pretty shocking. I liked when Colin discussed feeling like he has a community again. I think a lot of people feel that way in this group too. I know some people have different views than me but I kind of draw a line when people devalue the right of a woman to have control over her own body in favor of a potential life that is not a baby at that point. Really the worst part is most of these people won’t actually give a shit about this child once it’s born. You think kids never get molested or murdered in foster care? Back to the podcast though. I do wish we had Micah on the podcast when some of these conversations come up. I think a female perspective is really missing in some cases such as this topic.

Andrew Arana

Wipeout vr already exists mates. It was a part of the wipeout collection.

Chris

It's not cool to talk to people that way. We are just names on a screen. All you really know about any of us is that we like the gold standard of PlayStation news and analysis podcasts.

Michael Thew

Why shouldn’t he? It’s a law from the highest court in the United States. It’s not like he said he’s in favor of murder or rape, things that are illegal

Real Radec

The commercial that opened the show contained a bunch of easter eggs referencing the future announcements of the show (Ragnarok eey art, Drake and Chloe poster). People have found that there are more hints hidden in the video, including posters for an Aloy Fall Guys skin, Crash Bandicoot Wumpa League, and most notably an icon of Sly Cooper's calling card. For some reason this is giving me vibes of that tease of Crash Bandicoot coming back in that live action PS4 ad back in 2013. https://twitter.com/Blueknight_V2/status/1436121041403789314

TROTMAC96

I was really dissapointed that we finally didn't get to see what Abandoned was. My excitement for that game is practically dead at this point.

Wayde

Kotor 1 and 2 were some of my fondest highschool gaming memories. I just hope it's a quality remake

Brandon Soto

I’ll always have sympathy for your fallout with Greg & Kinda Funny. From the David Jaffe interview, I can tell how much you care for him still. You definitely belong, man. What you’ve built from essentially the ground up is astounding, and I’m glad to be in this community. Don’t ever give up or think otherwise.

Liam Mcnulty

Anyone else concerned that Sam Maggs is rewriting KOTOR? Somehow they feel this activist is a better writer than Bioware was at their peak. I was pumped when this was announced, then instantly deflated when it was revealed she was brought on to "modernise" it.

Liam Mcnulty

Same. I'm gutted, I was so hopeful it was Silent Hill. Whatever this game is I won't support it, because they clearly toyed with that IP to build up hype.

Anonymous

GT7 was the best trailer of the show

lazer_josh

WE ARE YOUR PEOPLE COLIN!

Samuel Ashley

The lack of any footage of Factions at this point is beginning to baffle me. For a project originally tied to TLoU2, you would think they would have a release date on the horizon.

Jeremy Seal

Chris is big on the voices this week. His "beta" voice was Kermit the Frog.

Max Stahl

Well, it does appear that my deliberate choice to wait to buy a PS5 will be rewarded! I'll go straight for that upgraded version, especially if it'll be smaller. Being a filthy, but patient casual fan does have its perks!

Liam Mcnulty

Many apologies, but one more comment, I'm slowly working through this awesomely long podcast; Why is it that when people support and advocate for zero limits on abortion, even up until birth, it's considered "stunning and brave", but when a line is drawn at a heartbeat (which I don't agree with, it's still too early for me), everyone loses their minds? 😂 Why is it wrong for him to support the pro life position, but when the same activist journalists who are angry at him, support a bill for abortion with no limit, that's somehow not radical? What happened to the compromise we had in the 90; safe, legal and rare. Now its one extreme or the other, but only the pro life people get dog piled and fired for their views. I'm kind of staggered that Chris doesn't get the pro life argument "at all", he doesn't get it even a little? That's insane. I see both sides. I'm pro choice.... To a point, I think after a certain amount of time an abortion seems morally questionable to me. I can't imagine how anyone can hold onto the pro choice argument when it comes to the 8 months point That's an insane position, one that's much more radical to me than the one this guy was fired for. But he's entitled to those views, it just took me by surprise. I didn't like how Chris and Dustin said the reason people are probably angry at him is because there's people on his side of the argument who protest outside an abortion clinic. So what? Doesn't mean he does. And let's not pretend the radicals on the pro choice side don't do ridiculous stuff like that. Sorry for the essay, it just seems like Colin was the only one speaking sense here. I'm moderately pro choice, but there has to be a point in the pregnancy where an abortion seems questionable at least, right?

Cash

Does it? You're 3 years late to the party (if it gets released in 2023) and spending more money. I'd much rather have bought a PS5 at launch, enjoyed it for 3 years, bought a PS5 Pro and sell my PS5 for almost full value (No way the shortage will be made up before 2023)

Anonymous

If it makes you feel any better, clearly neither Chris nor Dustin are among the great thinkers of our age, and I highly doubt either has done much research regarding the prenatal physiological development of humans so I wouldn’t put much stock in their views on the ethics, politics, or procedures regarding abortion. At least Chris isn’t big on China, and they are right that the punishment for political views only goes one way.

LastStandMedia

I wouldn't be too worried. Distance from TLoU2 just means the IP will be in people's minds longer.

NeO JD

“A lot of ass for a Thursday afternoon.” Oh Dustin, no such thing. 😄

David

I enjoyed it a lot. Like you all the middle was boring to me as I don't care for Tiny Tina or Guardians of the Galaxy (although if guardians gets good reviews I may get it when it's discounted). Started strong and ended strong. GT7 may be the first Gran Turismo game I buy. As I grew older I got more interested in cars and as my knowledge grew I know what goes into cars and what mods change on vehicles so with that knowledge it's got me very much intrigued

Wayde

I think the biggest issue for me with the Texas heartbeat law is the hypocrisy. These Texan politicians try to claim we all should have freedoms and autonomy to choose such as masks and vaccines but then want to restrict women's individual rights. Plus the $10k bounty garbage that's just pure insanity and ripe for abuse. They are pushing religious ideology when science does not back their claims as the heart and brain are not fully formed and functioning till 20 to 24 weeks. .. Freedom of choice is how you end this debate .those who are pro choice have The Choice to enforce their beliefs or ideology those who are pro life also have the ability to have their choices heard within the context of themselves. It's really not complicated but people pushing their own personal beliefs and ideology on other people is why it is such a complicated issue

Alexander Ivarson

It is still a complicated issue. Whether there is a heartbeat or brain function is null to a lot of people. A lot of it has to do with the sacredness of life. My woman is pregnant now and at 6 weeks I heard the heartbeat. A lot of people do not agree on many things though, and that's okay. Me personally I don't think it is right but I also believe what ever a woman decides is between her and whatever higher power or karma there is out there. But a lot of people point to me saying that and say shouldn't you be responsible to fight for any life. As I said, a very complicated issue.

Hey Colin, would love for the video podcast to be put up for $1 patrons at the same time as the audio 😅

Wayne Moss

Yer video hasn’t unlocked yet just audio for me also.

Mitun M

Video still locked?

Kevin Jay

So from what I’ve read the human eye kinda caps out 60 FPS and possibly a bit beyond that but I mean as for the “what FPS is the real world in?” I mean that question doesn’t make much sense because the real world doesn’t run in frames haha.

Danny Kellerman

Video feed still seems to be locked for $1 patrons

Wayne Moss

Yep video still seams to be locked for the $1 tier

TheMuff1nMon

I just have a very hard time believing PS5 Pro or any upgrade will happen so soon when most won't even have the base versions. I don't think this generation even needs a mid-gen refresh unlike last gen. Hope Tom is wrong and it doesnt happen. Won't trust him until I see it, been hearing about a Switch pro for years now and keep getting nothing lol

Kevin Cooper

I'm stoked to finally get my hands on Alan Wake, but I would be more excited had it released before Control launched (and maybe that was the plan at one point). Control's AWE DLC was a fun add-on, but the lore was completely lost on me because I had no point of reference in the Alan Wake universe -- and the Control DLC even spoils the plot of Alan Wake in some ways.

LastStandMedia

They just need to get it all into one game, OR release a large, standalone expansion that convinces me to go back.

Sam Dunham

Wipeout (the latest PS4 incarnation) is already fully playable in VR (and it is awesome).

Samuel Zamora

Overall I thought the showcase was good minus a few games I don’t care for but glad they are there to round out the catalog. I’m excited for Wolverine! I wished we would have got an announcement for a 3rd person shooter with either SOCOM or Syphon Filter that has a full fledged campaign (included with its own coop). I think Sony would be a good place to have tactical mil-sim shooter. None of this Battle Royale crap tho. Even a Killzone sideline story set during the first game would be cool. Next Gen consoles are definitely missing out on the tactical mil-sim shooters as the ones worth its wt are all on PC. And if they think this 5v5 Siege crap is the answer, they are very wrong.

Anonymous

Got to point out. Ireland voted in favour of removing an abortion ban 3 years ago. 66% for removing the ban. FYI.

Sweeney's Girlfriend Archive

I've heard people use PS5s to mine crypto. Is crypto mining coming into play with the shortage?

Travis B

Someone sticking up for an unborn child shouldn’t be a black balling offense.

LastStandMedia

I've heard this too, but as it's been explained to me, purchasing PS5s to mine crypto would be incredibly inefficient from a capital standpoint, when compared to availability and overall power.

The Eclectic Gamer

12 Minutes was a great experience, but can’t hold a candle to Disco Elysium…y’all had the entire summer to play through the game and you squandered it. Outlets are still writing pieces about this game… https://www.pcgamer.com/no-other-game-comes-close-to-disco-elysium/

Sweeney's Girlfriend Archive

I have tried several racing games and Forza Horizon games are the only ones that have the right feel when it comes to racing, vehicle damage, customizing appearance, and an immersive looking environment that doesn't get boring quickly.

Carlos Quintanilla

I play Avengers a few times a week primarily due to the Hero Challenge card objectives. Once a hero's challenge card is completed, enough in game currency is unlocked to purchase another hero's card without spending more money. I will say though, if this game has done anything, it's made me want Insomniac to make an Iron Man game. That Ant-Man stinger at the E3 reveal still pisses me off since he's still not in the game. What can you do? 😂

Wyvborn

I assume Tiny Tina's Wonderlands came from the fact that for years Borderlands fans have been asking for a DLC (or in this case, a spin-off) similar to that of Borderlands 2's Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep. It's regarded as many people's favorite Borderlands DLC. I don't know why they made it into a full on spinoff game though, but I'm excited nonetheless!

Kaz Redclaw

Yep, I'm not sure they'll be able to recapture the magic of that DLC in a longer game, I think there were factors outside of just the setting that really made that DLC shine as still being the single best borderlands DLC ever made. Of course, elaborating on that would be a spoiler for Dragon Keep. That kind of writing is also why I thought the story for Tales from the Borderlands was much better than most of the mainline games.

Kaz Redclaw

Given the chip shortages, it was accidentally wise that Sony made their processor a much smaller chip with fewer graphical cores, then clocked them higher. They can produce more chips with the same wafer allocation than the Xbox Series X can.

Kaz Redclaw

On the Texas law. I'm not really pro-life, but I think this law is interesting in that it uses a mechanism that the left has been hitting the right with on many fronts, and I find that if this law can poison that well and make that an invalid tactic for everyone to use, then it would be a net positive overall even if I think the law itself is terrible.

Jordan Clark

Thank you for the episode. I am a long time listener, first time supporter and I am pro-life. On the Texas Law conversation I just want to say THANK YOU so much for the conversation that was held on the topic. We need more conversations like this in the world. And in Regard to how we treat people on this topic all three of you had amazing answers. I love this podcast, I listen weekly, keep it up and please come do a live show in Saskatchewan, Canada. Haha.

Paul Andrew

Piggybacking off of this, amen. As a prolifer who is currently switching careers into game dev, this shouldn't just fall away. It's vitally important. People on both sides need to stop demonizing each other and portraying each other's arguments as the worst possible version
