Alive Space | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 156

Strange and potentially exciting things are happening at Electronic Arts, the once-maligned super-publisher that seems intent on turning things around, at least when it comes to hardcore players' perceptions of its brand. After ruining Mass Effect, nearly running BioWare into the ground, closing down storied dev Visceral, and botching most of its exclusive run of Star Wars games, it seems EA finally gets it: The audience demands more single-player games. And rumors are EA's about to deliver another one in the form of a Dead Space revival. That makes what was once dead very much alive, and we're very excited to talk about it. Plus: It appears Castlevania is getting a new collection, Sony expects PS5 to break sales records once it can adequately manufacture units, Ghost of Tsushima may be getting a standalone expansion, and much more. Then: Is Microsoft's xCloud a really big deal? What does it mean for a developer to be "media trained?" Will Sony wow us when they return to the mobile market? Does Chris know the difference between Cesar Romero and George Romero? Who’s responsible for the name of this episode 😑

Mason M

How did Salt Bae make it onto the podcast?

Frank G.

Idk what's grosser the heads on the insects 😧🪳or that gold, brown hue from the ps3 graphics. 😂 Damn son.

AlexDiesTwice

Correction about Harada, he came out again and he said that the subtitles were wrong and that the project is not dead and will release eventually (?) lol

Anonymous

You guys forgot to mention that the Abandoned teaser trailer had Unreal Engine 4 assets that you can buy from Epic. That was crazy.

Hidari Shotaro

This Blue Box situation is turning everyone mad. Dustin's ticking point killed me lol

When it comes to the Bobby Kottick conversation I’m not sure I agree with Dustin. While it’s true that the $ Bobby gets isn’t directly taken from laid off employees. EA as a publicly traded company chooses whether to use its cash to buy back dividends (which they can give to Bobby) or invest in its studios. By choosing to buy back dividends they are in a sense taking that $ away from their current/former employees. I could be wrong though.

Jerison Reidell

"Survival" begins with an "S" and ends with an "L", and seems like it would fit the theme of this game based on what we've seen so far.

Antonio Pereira

Just to add on to how hilarious it was that people names their kids Khaleesi, that isn’t even her name on the show lol. I’m positive at least 50% of the people who named their kid that didn’t realize that.

P Neal

I played it in fidelity. 30 fps. I generally played graphics. I'm playing 60 fps on performance mode.

I pointed out on Twitter that there also exists a "Redbox Game Studios" (redboxgamestudios.com) and lo-and-behold, part of the site is in Turkish (Hasan is Turkish for Hideo). I wonder if that morse code "conversation" was directing to that.

Richard Duflo

Not exactly looking forward to PS mobile, but I wonder if a Fallout Shelter style Last of Us game would work

Sean P

Unless I missed it. How'd you guys forget about Calisto protocol. From the dead space creator. I want to know more about that game

Anonymous

It also has the guy that made Dead Space 2 as well. The Callisto Protocol is easily ny most anticipated game.

Cameron Sanderson

Colin, I don’t understand your hesitation with playing the FFVII remake and the Yuffie DLC on PS5. When you upload your PS4 save and bring it across to the PS5 version, all the trophies you earned pop straight away when you start the game on PS5. I did this and got mirror trophies on the PS5. Is this what you do not want to happen, or did you think you had to earn them again? I’m looking to now do my NewGame+ on the PS5 and get the Platinum, been holding off playing that second run until I could play the superior version on the PS5.

Liam Mcnulty

Colin: "Dead Space is the best horror game ever" *Angry Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 4: The Room noises*

easelgames

from my understanding he doesn't want two trophy lists for the same game.. which if that was the case he'd never play it unless he used a side account or something? idk

Josh Jelen

For me personally, I have to say that yeah Insomniac > Naughty Dog. I have absolutely loved everything Insomniac has done in recent memory especially. But I can certainly see it being the other way around for someone else.

Hey guys, Just wanted to point out that I got a physical copy of Ghost of Tsushima around Christmas of 2020 and it already had this "new" box art without the "only on PlayStation" line. Just wanted to point this out and see if that changes the story at all.

Raul Hernandez

Fighting game crossovers, Marvel Vs Capcom 4, 70 plus characters, keep that series alive

Tony Rivera

Chris looks like Howard Stern LOL

Jason Bristol

For Dustin, the Turtle guy side quest in FF7 Intermission gets you Fort Condor playing pieces which is worth it to play on hard mode so I recommend it. The quest isn’t hard so up to your preference.

Anonymous

Great ear, Chris. I was curious myself so I had to look it up. James Arnold Taylor does the voice acting for Ratchet and also apparently voiced Tidus in FFX as well. "Ahauhahahaha!"

Brian Salazar

Let’s reach a compromise. I will give up all superhero content as long as we also eradicate all anime content. This includes video games.

Germanos

Holy crap 😱 that take on game demo feedback was bad. As someone who works in software development, involved in production/product creation, it almost gave me cancer. Feels like a dodged a bullet. Phew.

For Chris. I have the Bioshock chains tattoo on just my left wrist. Thought about it for years before I got it done. Mostly because of judgemental religious upbringing/ family. I am very glad I got it and the meaning for me, considering my background, is spot on.

Nathan Guergis

Mobile gaming is much better than people think it is. It isn't even "mobile" anymore. Get an Apple TV, a $5 Apple Arcade subscription, and use a DualShock 4 with it. It's this incredible indie gaming console that nobody is talking about.

Hi Colin, Chris & Dustin. I feel compelled to write in for something that has been bothering me for quite a while with the show, and I'd be interested to hear your take on it. A considerable portion of your podcasts are spent discussing how you think a company should market their game. At the end of this episode, a discussion about how to announce a studio and a project lasts over 15minutes, and this happens almost every podcast regarding how Sony handle their announcements etc. I feel like you've discussed before how you're anti-hype and don't really care for PR and consider yourself an outsider etc. which is fine, I know you can hold two opinions at once. However, I would like to know if you think discussing how a reveal of something goes is at all relevant to people not in the industry. It seems you considered the Haven story a non-story, but then proceeded to talk about it over three episodes now, sort of wasting people's time. I get that journalists wrote about it and you want to fire back somewhat, but your audience really doesn't care what someone on Kotaku wrote. Industry News comes with discussions on announcements, I get that, but I don't know if a critical, analytical, breakdown of PR speak for a self described non-story is really relevant... to anything other than the PR teams themselves. I wish your discussions about games were longer and more nuanced, the three of you cover a spectrum of player types so it's actually really interesting to hear what some of you like/dislike and when there's crossover. You're averse to being "part of the conversation", yet, rarely talk about games that you revisit, maybe because of a sale it can be worth talking about something not current. When you occasionally do revisit a game, it's typically a very short discussion. I hope you can also pose the question to the audience, I'd love to hear what others think of this too. Thanks, Darren

LastStandMedia

Interesting. Yet, people are writing in saying they just bought a copy from Sony during that sale with that branding. So.

WhatDarrenPlays

The business side is great, super interesting - but if you come across something and think it's not worth (journalists) writing about, surely spending more than a few minutes on it contradicts that sentiment? Anyways, thanks for reading and replying.

Raul Hernandez

MVC 4 cross over, Megaman v Strider, I know about how Smash does things, we need a SNK style cross over fighting game

Nygile Oliver

Oh no Dustin's missing out on those Yuffie DLC side quests, the Happy Turtle quest is worth it just for the Happy Turtle man's jingle blasting through the controller alone, and Fort Condor is the other side quest, it's an incredible strategy MOBA thing that deserves its own Vita port for how fun and high quality it is as a minigame you'll rue this day

Hi Colin I know your mostly all In for Digital on PS5. I am still mostly physical . In New Zealand physical games even brand new are significantly cheaper. I was able to purchase Ratchet & Clank for 80 New Zealand Dollars and Digitally on PSN it is $140. NZD. I know in North America new game releases prices seem to be pretty consistent across retailers and PSN. Do you think if prices where drastically different you would Still purchase games digitally, When I preorder games I also often receive my games 1 -3 days early. My work schedule is mostly weekends so this works out for me. There is also the fact that certain good ps4 games have been delisted from the psn store and if it weren't for Physical games it would be impossible to play these games unless you had already bought them.

Greeting, chums! After seeing a leak about Sony's acquisition of Bluepoint then watching that "Death Stranding: Director's Cut" trailer again, I cannot help but believe that Blue Box is code name for the development of a Metal Gear Solid remake by Bluepoint. Sam jumping in and out of the box a la Solid Snake then placing it back on the shelf so we can see the print "handled with love" is a clearly and allegory of Kojima's passing of the torch to the more than capable hands of Bluepoint Studios. Then again Kojima is a master of mindfuckery and it's very possible that this is just another one many illusions veiling any minute detail regarding his next project. Are you guys sick of discussing this or still intrigued? Have you constructed any new theories as more news has developed or do you no longer care? Thanks, as always, for the awesome content. Please stay salmonella free.

Homz

I'm from NZ as well. Its very rare that I by a game digitally. The price is just way to high and given how many games i buy a year it can mean another two or three games.

Kaz Redclaw

Insomniac has always been my favorite studio making Playstation games in the US. Even back in the PS1 era, I greatly preferred Spyro to Crash, and Ratchet over Jak. There's been mediocre games from Insomniac, but they're far between. (Slow Down, Bull was a little bland, FUSE had all the life sucked out of it by EA's focus testing, Full Frontal Assault and Deadlocked were kind of the worst Ratchet games.) Even their weird Facebook game and their indie games have been really fun. My favorite games from Naughty Dog were Uncharted, and the first Last of Us, and even those weren't among my favorite games overall. At this point, Insomniac is #1 to me, with Naughty Dog somewhere around #3rd behind Suckerpunch (I like everything they've done.)

BlindRiot

So Sony just bought two studios that you’d be forgiven for thinking they already owned? Note, Colin called this quite awhile ago. All hail the only hero we need. They are both great buys, a diversified Sony is perhaps on its way?

LastStandMedia

We'll discuss this more, I think, but I may want to relegate it to an episode of +. Who knows.

Tiago Müller

Been happening for a while now, but I share Colin's frustration when it comes to the PS4 releases of PS5 games. I'm from Brazil and paid a fortune for my PS5 at launch, only to see myself having to content with 60FPS re-releases or "better on PS5" approach for games that comes to both consoles. Oh well, at least some of them plats auto-pop.

Chris Brinkley

Can't access the episode after this one

LastStandMedia

It's bonkers that Sony doesn't better adjust their own prices to compete. It could be part of their deal with their retailer friends, though...
