We're about a month and a half out from PlayStation 5's launch, precariously close to the release of a console that at one time seemed unlikely to come out in 2020 at all. Yet, there's obvious trepidation lurking in the ecosystem. There's plenty of excitement too, no doubt, but something just feels a little... well... off. Doesn't it? Well, we'll let you guys and gals tell us, as we conduct a gut check based on five PS5-related parameters: Hardware, Price, Games, Marketing, and Optics. Only then can we truly identify the good, the bad, and the ugly, and figure out what's what in the shadow of PlayStation 5. (And we mean literally. The console is gigantic.)

Thanks very much for all the hard work, boys!

Anthony J Sanchez

Let's hope the PS5 messaging to it's consumers gets better in the weeks leading up to launch. And btw, I moved to central Florida from Chicago when I was 25 nearly 10 years ago. Life is so much less expensive and calm down here. Best personal decision I've ever made!

Anonymous

I’m feeling like waiting on getting the PS5. Might sell the preorder to a friend and wait a year or two to buy it when the exclusives hit.

Anonymous

Excellent!

Max Stahl

I'm actually excited to wait, truly. When a slimmer version of the console comes out with some of the kinks ironed out and it is in black, I'll be all over it. Hell, even if it's the same price. More games will be out by then and I'll have time to save for it. I don't even particularly plan on playing any of the crossover titles, really.

David Graham

Why was it necessary to censor the vitruvian man? Not that I'm complaining.

Anonymous

Cheers!

Cristian Colta

Why the censorship on the thumbnail?

Anonymous

Da Vinky?

Anonymous

That’s wild

Anonymous

Sexy Chris voice again. Buckle in, boys. We’re in for a show.

Anonymous

Japan be like...

Jake Z

God, the copying thing is so annoying. And it seems to happen randomly. That better be fixed next gen.

Aurang

The Triumphant return of Chris Earl Jones.

Richard Duflo

The silence is annoying, but I’m looking forward to another great PS console. Even at Sony’s lowest with the terrible PS3 launch they turned it around. They’ll be just fine imo. Gamepass is a great deal no question, but how sustainable is it in the long run? Games are so expensive to make. Does Microsoft really recover that cost from subscribers?

Mason M

I feel tired listening to this, just negative about everything. Some things are bad but it’s probably just me tired of the negativity and just ready to get this thing and enjoy it for what it is.

Anonymous

I have been seeing ps5 commercials and i dont watch alot of tv

Anonymous

The NBA has the PS5 logo on court. I've seen the logo on the sideboards during NHL games (Canadian feed at least). I wouldn't expect to see it during NFL games since XBOX is the official console of the NFL (w.e the fuck that means).

bix hutch

Do we know if PS5 has quick resume?

Real Radec

Eh idk Killzone Shadowfall was so mediocre that it killed the franchise. Shame cause Killzone 2 and 3 were so good on PS3. I also think its smart that Sony chose to remake Demon's Souls. Having the original fromsoft Souls game as a exclusive to entice the Souls fans who missed out on the original PS3 game. Also looking forward to the podcast next week, they just announced more pre-order details for Sackboy which looks really dope actually, Sackboy is one of my favorite characters!

Anonymous

I have just seen PlayStation announce deluxe editions for their launch titles. Sackboy's one seems pretty cool to me with the costumes and art book as a great celebration of Playstation! Also Demon's Souls continues to look phenomenal and for me is the star of November's exclusive lineup. I do have to say, however, the deluxe edition for Destruction AllStars indicates the game has microtransactions. I wrote in recently about that this game does not seem to justify its $70/£70/ €80 price tag and somehow now the situation is even worse! I hope I'm wrong about this and perhaps the currency can only be earned in-game. Can't help but think the optics of such pricing situations could turn bad very quickly.

Jake Z

I don't understand what all this trepidation talk is about. PS5 pre-orders are selling out immediately. Justin Davis said IGN's traffic on PS5 preorder day was unlike anything he's ever seen. I think you're getting a skewed view of how excited people are for this console launch.

Anonymous

When people say they’re abandoning ship, does that mean they’re just leaving playstation or leaving gaming in general?

Real Radec

Yeah the excitement is definitely there for sure. A bunch of people at my residence who I wouldnt consider "hardcore gamers" seem pretty stoked for the PS5. Same goes for Xbox too

Explosivebob

Probably in general, why explore the post apocalyptic landscape of the last of us if we can experience first hand with real life graphics.

David Kramme

PSA if you own a PS4, do not SLEEP on 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim, I can't really explain w/o spoiling it but it's not what you think it is...that is all, great discussion, thanks for that.

Real Radec

Emmett Graves deserves more. Starhawk was sick and I'm glad he was added to PSAS. We need more great PoC main characters in the video game medium.

Anonymous

I remember ps2 smoothing out the games and fast lousing ps1 games.

Dr. Peter Venkman

Ive been with playstation for a long time. Im ready and waiting to jump to ps5. Im excited. Ive raised the banner. But sony just doesn't seem like they want me to buy their console and celebrate. Ill keep a look out to see if I can purchase one before next year.

Anonymous

Y'all being quite negative tbh. 2021 is looking to be one of the best first party lineups ever.

Dom posa

The Ps4 controller regular price is $64.99

Anonymous

Nah no way this is happening. Less than 10% will actually be jumping ship I imagine

Chris

If Microsoft, Amazon, or Google ever really decided to take over the gaming market, I think they probably could. These companies have like half a billion in cash on hand, but Sony’s dominance is due to the time they took in carefully cultivating and nurturing their studios while taking advantage of being a platform holder. To this day I don’t see what the fuss is about Game Pass, I check every month to see if it’s time, but the games on there just aren’t that special, I wouldn’t give the library a leg up on PlayStation Now, especially if you’re looking to play this gen’s games, and especially since it is a third of the price. Game Pass is a promise for the future: your subscription will include the new Halo and Gears games, upcoming EA play games, and now all of Bethesda’s games day and date. Maybe they’re reading the tea leaves correctly, but $15 a month won’t recoup the value, a 30% cut off microtransactions and dlc for this “free to play” business model will.

Chris

Also I’m betting that horizon 2 is their spring game, putting it position to be PS5’s infamous second son. Allowing Horizon to be cross gen relegates PS5 to a PS4 Pro 2, and that’s what it will be until they release something truly compelling, like hopefully god of war.

Dom posa

Wasn’t horizon confirmed as launch window? As long as we can fly in ps5 version and not in ps4 I’m good but that better happen. At first I was upset about the Ps4 versions but the developers of quantum error confirmed that they are making 2 separate version so that makes me believe them about the others . If they go day and date ps now you can kiss big budget single player games goodbye and get ready for unfinished games full of micro transactions. Sony 1st party games were always better than Xbox but since gamepass they got significantly worse.

Chris

Gotta say, I’m a little tipsy and it’s my bday, but this has gotta be one of the best shows you guys have done. Chris had really insightful takes. People can have different opinions and that’s fine, but always fun when someone says something and you’re like yesss exactly. Closing prediction/thoughts: ps5 will trounce Xbox in the next gen in terms of hardware sales, but Xbox is banking on a new measure of success: turning their platform into an app that’s available on iOS, android, TVs, Amazon fire sticks, etc. Presumably, they’ll still get 30% of mtx and dlc sold through their app (-30% from the hardware manufacturer?), plus the subscription fees from people who would never buy a dedicated console. It remains to be seen if they’ll be successful, or who it will be good for. I could foresee them being the highest revenue generator in the gaming industry overall, while drawing more attention to Sony and Nintendo, because a percentage of their user base will be looking for deeper experiences. In a way, it’s like leaving the industry.

Miles Williams

The only reason I'm even considering buying a PS5 at launch is Demon's Souls. I'm a huge Souls fan though. If it wasn't for that game I wouldn't worry about it. Ratchet looks great also, but I can wait for it.

Miles Williams

Also if they announce Bloodborne 2 in a couple years I'll sell my kidney for a PS5 Haha. I bought a PS4 for Bloodborne... I'd gladly do the same for PS5.

Joey Rawlings

I think there’s a vast difference between complete negativity and open criticism.

Hey C&C, in light of the Twitter feeds in regards to CDPR crunch or just crunch in general. I'm an Emergency Healthcare employee that has been consistently faced with incredibly long mandatory shifts due to COVID. It completely baffles me that people are complaining about a crunch culture when devs have to work extended hours for a few months. Maybe they lack perspective on the matter. These people wouldn't want me walking out on their sick family members because I reach my 40hr work week. I just think a dev working on a highly prestigious title working extra isn't a big issue. It's something they are proud of and invested in and it's the same reason I don't walk out of my job. Thanks for the conversations and the podcast, always great content

Kevin Tuber

I’m so bummed I wasn’t able to preorder a ps5. I had to start my twelve hour shift at work just before the early preorder madness started and by the time I had heard what happened it was too late. I was only able to preorder accessories and games but no console. This sucks.

Toren R. (KESA)

Wait.... Who erased the penis on the Vertruvian Man for the title art lololol?

Brad Felix

Agreed. This sounds like the doom and gloom show! Some unbelievable looking games (Demons, Spider Man, FF XVI, God of War, Horizon, Deathloop, Gran Turismo 7, Ratchet and Clank, WAY better loading speeds, 4K games, I'm excited!

rubber nipples 209

Hey KKK. What is sony up to ? Xbox is showing older games and UI. Why is Sony not showing anything. In August 2013 Sony was showing the PS4 menu and other stuff.

Brent

I have to be honest if Chris wants a machine to replay older games and have them look better... it’s called a PC and I’ve been playing 10 year old games in 4K 60 FPS for a long time.

JusticeSoulTuna

Great show guys. I'm getting a Series X at launch to hop back into Destiny 2 on console, from PC. I want to upgrade my PC eventually, but I love the console experience and tbh £450 to have a next gen console on par with PC is good for me. I'll get PS5 when Horizon and God of War comes out. PS4 was my exclusives console, so PS5 will be the same

Jeremy Miller

Thanks for reading my question/comment Colin! Really made my day 😁

Real Radec

Yo heads up the source code for the PS5 website reveals some cool tidbits, this thread and the first comment list them, including up to 100 person party chats lmao. https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingLeaksAndRumours/comments/j28s89/more_ps5_info_on_backcompat_forced/

NeO JD

Didn’t think Chris had buying property money. CLS paying the big stacks. Hardware - Visually, this generation of consoles are the worst looking. I’m not a fan of either design. The fact that the PS5 comes with the floor stand which has to be used even when its set horizontally says to me that they went overboard on the visual aesthetic. Controller - I love the DS4 and I’m uneasy about the DS5 being bigger. For reference, my favorite controller is still the Xbox 360 controller with the DS4 right behind it. I think game streaming will always be irrelevant as long as consoles exist. Nobody wants to play games in an inferior way with lag and such. I don’t think PS has to worry about services as long their exclusive games keep their quality. In terms of jumping ship and going back to Xbox as my primary, I would only do so if the Xbox runs multi-platform games significantly better and if PS5 doesn’t have a good equivalent to Xbox’s Quick Resume feature. I don’t think PS will try to copy GamePass simply because they can’t afford to take that hit like Xbox can. They don’t have the same war chest.

RD_21

Ok this time I think it's fair to point the HYPOCRISY 😜 of Colin. You always said that you did not care for the look of a console so I couldn't help but laugh a little when you finally understood some of the people who swear by the look of a console when you said honestly I don't want this thing in my entertainment center now.

Michal Dudic

A little tidbit that may or may not be directly related to the slow PS4 DL speeds. Downloading things is a CPU-bound activity because there is real-time decompression happening whenever you are downloading things. That's why PC users sometimes see a bump in DL speeds after they upgrade their CPU - they have a faster connection that was being bottlenecked by their CPU. Maybe PS4's CPU is bad at that type of workload. Expect to see massive improvements next gen.

Anonymous

You're right in principle, but with how low the speeds usually capped out, you're likely dealing with a network bottleneck.

KomakiKhaos

I’m curious about the actual dimensions of the console. I’ll need to get more shelf space

Brandon Soto

Damn, was hoping my comment would get read. Nonetheless, great episode. The silence & lack of communication is very tiresome from Sony. It’s clear as day that they don’t have enough consoles made. STILL don’t know what the UI looks like or how PS4 games will look/run. Weird, early PS3 vibes like I said.

Brandon Soto

Completely agree. If people actually looked at the games on GamePass, there’s really a bunch of garbage & B/C-tier games. And people shitting on $70 games from Sony acting like $70 Series X games won’t also be a thing. People really think every new game will be on GamePass. Most Xbox One exclusives aren’t that impressive either.

Just wanted to say it’s so good to hear Chris again. Dustin was great and all, but Chris and Colin have genuinely great chemistry together. Listening to you guys banter is one of the best things I hear all week and it really cheers me up.

Romeo

The Roast of PS5

Nokeystothecity

It's funny Chris brought up that copying update shit... Rainbow Six Siege does this to me all the time. It did it to me the other day, and that was the final straw... I decided to finally look up what the fuck reason this shit is about... I looked it up online and the answer I found was it's pretty much re-downloading the entire game again, or a large portion of the game at least. I don't know if this is true and if that's what Colin meant by what he said about the "zip file thing." Either way, it is a time-suck.

David P

I'm glad to see some criticism of the PS5's design become more accepted. It's ridiculous. I'm sure the size is a necessity, but those fins are extraneous and seem like they could even snap off. I'm specifically waiting for a slim revision now, one that hopefully still has a disc slot. The Series X is pretty big too, but it's simple. I also find it elegant, even if it's "just a box". And they have a smaller cheaper option too, one that I've actually been genuinely considering picking up.

King0fChickens

Fantastic episode, I constantly tell friend that this is undoubtedly the best gaming podcast, I think Ryan over at IGN does a great Xbox podcast but I seriously think you've set an unbeatable, premium level for gaming podcasts. You've captured the attention of an Xbox only user with your humour, knowledge and fairness. I wait eagerly for each episode to drop, thank you and take care! (glad Chris is well again)

Your Boi Nicky V

You guys were on the ball with the comment about Sony having a likeable cast of personalities. Seems almost the opposite now, Spencer couldn't have done a worse job preparing the 1st party for launch but he's honest, likeable, pro-consumer and charismatic. Huge contrast to Jim Ryan.

LastStandMedia

I mean that, as far as I understand, the console downloads a package and therefore needs twice the space of that package, because it then needs to decompress the package and copy the file.

Jeremy

The only thing I disagree with is that only 3 PS5 games will come to PS4 (which I'm not happy about) but just to say that aside 3 games, the PS5 will still be worth it as the rest won't come to PS4 :'D

Anis

Playstation 5 is worth it for the speed of the sdd alone, my pc already use ssd from years ago, it's a game changer for me when I used windows 10. Also demons souls and spider-man at 60 fps is nice, although I prefer if horizon 2 is a true ps5 exclusive. Oh, and I think ps4 pro price in my country is still high, so I can sells it with a couple of games to subsidize at least 50% of my ps5 purchase. For playstation services, I think sony should close psnow and fold it into psplus, give us $40 psplus and $60 psplus platinum, the same as psplus but we get all of psnow games. For streaming, copy geforce now, you can play all of your ps5 games on streaming if you get psplus, or a only couple of hours a week if you don't have psnow.

Michael Maneage

I think Sony has to remember what turned the tide during the PS3 era. They started with an expensive system that wasn't easy to develop or port games. Yet they clawed their way back with exclusives. They are at their best when they are acquiring teams that are ready to take the next step. The Insomniac purchase, though ultimately good, struck me as worrisome in its philosophy. I know they've been working together for ages. Sony got a proven heavy hitter. Yet it makes me wonder if they are out of the business of finding the next heavyweight. Microsoft is throwing its weight and wallet around buying and creating teams. Though there is a lot of focus on hardware performance, backwards compatibility and cross platform play- I still think that it will ultimately come down to console exclusives. What can you create that people can only play on your box and/or wifi router shaped object?

Kevin McChesney

Was anyone else upset when Colin brought up Jack Trenton without doing his famous “Jackie T” impression?

Zack Fair

The Internet speeds should be better with the PS5 as it has WiFi 6 which offers 9.6gbps whereas the PS4 pro offered 3.5gbps. The Series S and X is going to still use WiFi 5

LastStandMedia

They need to be hungry. It remains to be seen if they are. I really don't know the answer.

Zack Fair

Love your content dude and followed you since the Beyond days.

Nate McKinney

In terms of ads, I've seen some on YouTube playing before videos, but that's it
