For months, we've been noting the shocking level of silence emanating out of both Sony and Microsoft. Eventually, something had to give, and it has: Xbox Series X has a release date, a price, a launch library, and even a cheaper companion, the long-rumored Xbox Series S. These two machines are interesting in that they're truly different from one another. They play the same games, but they don't have nearly the same power, and it's an approach that allows Microsoft to attack Sony from below. So let's spend time working through Xbox's big news, and whether it all cumulatively represents a marked changing of fortunes for PlayStation's comparatively-struggling competitor. Then, let's chat about Ubisoft's new announcements -- including a clever new sports-driven battle royale-like game -- and deal with some other, smaller happenings in the industry before we move onto your inquiries. What's the perfect release window for single-player DLC? How do we feel about Colin Kaepernick's return to Madden? Will we see a post-release surge in popularity for The Avengers? What's the specific amount of time a towel can be used before being washed?

This might be the most excited I’ve been for an episode of Sacred Symbols!

Looking forward to it! Thanks for the timely upload this AM 😎

Dammit Colin you spelled License wrong :(

Anthony J Sanchez

Thank you for bringing up Fallout 3 DLC. I think it timed everything perfectly! I'm going to play Peril on Gorgon my next day off and I can't freaking wait. You guys are awesome, and keep up the great work!

Jose Horrach

Hi professional chef here. Peanut butter on burgers are actually great. I actually have a burger that sells like gangbusters, it's a burger Miso peanut butter, crisp bacon, and jalapeño jelly. It's like Crack.

Gr4vity400

Check out "Alone" on Netflix. Other seasons are on hulu if you like it.

Max Stahl

A price of for-fiddy is da oly wai.

lazer_josh

Just set it aaaand....

Jose Horrach

For Scott Pilgrim, there was the "Wallace Wells DLC pack" that added online multi-player. That DLC is included in the re-release so it's safe to assume it will have online multi-player.

Monterey Jack

Though the series s/x is appealing for 3rd party games, I wouldn't be happy about losing trophies on ps5.

Angel DeJesus

The majority of people don't have 4k tvs, but i think the majority of console gamers do.

Shaun Wilkinson

That person getting the Series S over a PS5 will regret that pretty fast imo. I have an One X with Gamepass and it’s not been a good experience for the last year.

David Kramme

I use Gamepass on my gaming PC and have a PS4 for exclusives, given the option of playing GP games on my TV I also plan on picking up a series S and wait for PS5 until they have a "killer app" in a year or so, take care guys.

Anonymous

Yeah Chris is way off and missing other details on the S. The 7.5gbs of usable ram and 128bit memory bandwidth are not even considered in his views.

Angel DeJesus

I will get game pass next yr when i upgrade my phone, and play the handful of Microsoft titles I wanna play there.

David Kramme

Money is not the issue, the library is pretty vast and growing all the time, even at $20 a month it’s an incredible value, I actually enjoyed Wasteland 3 so much I bought on Steam to kick InExile some cash.

Owen

I too am going to now be getting an Xbox series x. 34.99 with game pass ... like they wore me down boys. Like it’s such a good fucking deal.

Jake Z

Was the level of silence really "shocking"? The Switch price and release date was announced two months out as well.

Liam Mcnulty

Bought every single PS console on launch day since PS2, and even I'm considering going for Xbox day one this time. Microsoft are making all the right moves, and it's backwards compatible with all their previous generations. I'll still more than likely get the PS5 day one, but I'm happy to support Microsoft as well, given all the consumer friendly moves they've been making.

“Is it Valhalla or Ragnarok” Love you Colin. XD

Bryan King

Series S is a last gen console, it won't even use 4K assets. Every developer seems to hate it and say it will hold things back. What a surprise that Chris doesn't see a problem.... did he even consider the memory situation? This thing is terrible....

Jake Z

You know what looks worse than the Prince of Persia remake? Super Mario 3D All-Stars!

David Kramme

People are getting hella triggered here, love it!

David Kramme

That sounds incredible actually, never considered pb on a burger but the more I thought about it... I’m going to try it this weekend.

Jake Z

Is there actual data on this? Would be nice to know.

Omar Rosa

Peanut butter on a burger isn’t as bad as it sounds. Cream cheese on a burger is the truth!

BigArty

Two notes: Chris getting a 2018 Corolla for 2k is insanity, that’s a good friend right there selling it to him. Theres a local bar/grill is in my town that serves up a “Jiffy Burger”. It’s fucking fantastic. Give the peanut butter burger a try I promise it’s fantastic. Especially when ur drunk.

Brandon Soto

Super Mario Galaxy should get its own Knockback episode. Fond memories from that game.

Cory Towler

Now we talked about using a towel often before washing it after a shower.... but.... what’s the standard with using a towel after a bath? These are the real answers we need in life. Help me be better.

Miles Williams

I've never owned a Xbox console, but the price of the series s, along with Gamepass, is super intriguing. I haven't seen any PS5 games that I "must have" at launch. So I might just wait until Demon's Souls comes out until I get a PS5.

Liam Mcnulty

Microsoft are making all the right moves at the moment. Can't fault them really.

Bryan King

Cancelling my sub. Sorry Colin this is not a PlayStation podcast.

Jose Horrach

Imagine being a fanboy in 2020.

Tony Colton

Fri 13th... Superstitious day to launch 😱

Josh Lucas

The weird thing about Xbox Series S is that it’s weaker than the Xbox One X, and they’re discontinuing the Xbox One X, but keeping the Xbox One S. It has been been confirmed by Microsoft that the Xbox Series S won’t be able to run the Xbox One X enhanced versions of backwards compatible games, and will be running the Xbox one S versions. Seems like they realized Xbox One X was a better buy, and discontinued it so that people would choose the Series S over the One X.

Kevin Sullivan

I was about to replay Witcher 3 but now I'll just wait for the PS5 upgrade. God bless CDPR. This will be your time to finally see it through, Colin. To speak to another topic you covered in this episode, CDPR set the bar for the industry with the two expansions for the game.

Dom posa

Facts. People acting like 300 isn’t shit but 400 is so expensive. What can I play on the series s that can’t be played on the current Xbox

Brandon Soto

Agreed. This makes 505 Games / Remedy look even more full of it now.

Brandon Soto

The Avengers game is definitely good & I’m enjoying it as well, just wish the Single-player was longer. I was convinced when I saw Crystal Dynamics was working on it. Those Tomb Raider reboot games were great.

Jake Z

My initial reaction to the Series S was basically Colin's, and then I was sort of persuaded of Chris's view that it won't hold back games because it basically has the same specs as the Series X, but targets 1080p output. Then I watched this DF video where they show concern that the Series S won't be enough for some next gen games. We won't know till it comes out if it's powerful enough, but they give reasons to be worried. It would be wild if third party AAA developers abandon the Series S in the near future. https://youtu.be/mL4OC46VzFw

Adrian Pinter

I love how respectful you guys are when you talk to each other.

Philip Andersen

My take is that the series S suggest is made for people as a entry point to get into the eco-system, a system for a kid or someone who just don’t play much. Because just buying extra storage gonna be expensive as heck and removing and re-download/installing games constantly is painful for many of us already with 1tb . Even tho your drive is 500gb, your system data and reserved storage also takes space (eg. 1tb Xbox one x, you can only use 780gb), so u may only have 400gb, hopefully like 450gb to use for games/apps.

Benito

there was a super interesting thread on resetera (yes I know...) that compiled a bunch of developer reactions to the Series S. While some of them were positive others were surprisingly pretty negative. In particular they were worried about the 10gb of ram on the S compared to the 16 os the X. Just something to keep in mind when the inevitable Digital Foundry game comparison videos start coming in lining up the PS5 and two Xboxs side by side.

Craig Mcguire

Strap in lads because the fanboys will only get more crazy in the coming weeks. God help us if these PS5 prices arent what we expect.

Frank G.

I really think the series S is pretty impressive i might get one as a back up in the future, because I already had my mindset on the mini-fridge lol, I want all the specs and the price isn't too high. Its a better design than the ps5 IMO but as soon as I found out you can update the memory and Ssd on the playstation I don't care how tall that modem looking shit is.

Anonymous

Chris, we've already been over this. You don't need a special HDMI cable for 4k.

DeucesBruh

It does not make financial sense to finance something as mundane as a video game console. You should generally only finance things like vehicles and real estate. As a finance person it always makes me wince.

Xbox One S is a great value. However, many are missing out on its potential flaws/ setbacks. I love Chris, but like various media outlets - he’s kind of over simplifying it and thinking it’s gods gift to gaming. A flood of devs from major studios actually took to Twitter to voice their concerns about the console. In particular, they feel it will be a bottleneck because it’s low ram, and handicapped specs. Colin is right, in that Devs will now have to cater to the lowest common denominator, and it’s not as simple as them just scaling down. Whereas they might have used the full power of next-gen specs initially (it’s not just for graphics, things like AI, scripting, loading, world design) - they now have to be mindful of the Xbox One S and not relying on the specs for certain design elements. I truly think gamers are expecting it to hit 1440p at 120fps for every major title, but are gonna be let down when these games end up having to be scaled back and have many compromises. Also while Sony is making a clear line in the sand between generations, Microsoft’s first party titles are gonna be focusing on the lower system (so PS5 exclusives are going to look way more next-gen). While multiplat titles never use the full specs of a console, it’s still another hurdle they now have to think about. It’s more work for them, and you might see them catering to the S more if that console ends up outselling the X by a large margin. I dunno just my thoughts. I also think Alanah Pearce made a good point, in that MS is 100% diving into the mobile strategy with all access payments. That probably means MS will release a new Xbox every 2 years, and once a players contract is up and paid off (again just like smart phones) they will push to have the player enter a new contract for the upgraded system. The reason this is a problem, is that Sony designed their system to last 6-7 years. No doubt they will prob release a Pro model in 3 years. But if MS starts putting out new iterations every 2 years like phone providers do, that effectively makes our PlayStation console outdated. It would massively shift the way Devs make games (as specs would be continually shifting). So I dunno. I think Xbox S is a great value. But I’m not 100% sure this is all glowing and wonderful news.

Piston Pants

A Chris solo episode on what people think he gets wrong? Shit 7 hour podcast it is then.

NeO JD

PB on a burger sounds awful. The towel question...I’d say a week or less. Col, I’m 29 and don’t have a license either. Although, I use Lyft and not Uber. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Matthew Cooper

From a business perspective, I understand Microsoft offering a finance plan. But from a consumer perspective, it's not a good idea. If you can't just pay for your new video game console, you don't need to be buying it. It's not any kind of necessity...it's a toy.

LastStandMedia

I think it sounds great for a guy like me, who might turn it on a few times a year at most.

LastStandMedia

I think he means you need a newer HDMI cable, which you do. I went through that with my new house, so I only know that because I have some experience.

LastStandMedia

It's my concern as well, as you said... but that's Xbox's issue. PS5 won't have that problem, which should give it a power edge and a nice boost of morale to the dev ecosystem.

Cameron Sanderson

I’m a huge fan of peanut butter, love all types of peanut butter concoctions like the peanut butter flavoured shake at Shake Shack. I’m also a massive burger fan, but peanut butter in a burger just sounds wrong. No thanks!

Napoleon in Rags

Colin you mentioned that you were searching for something to watch on Netflix but nothing caught your eye but surely you’ve watched High Score by now yes? Thoughts?

Craig Mcguire

Regards the S and its ram issues. I dont know of its as damaging as some would say. If we are to believe what the Xbox hardware engineer says the tools in place like sampler feedback should increase memory efficiency by 2.5x the raw specs, then theres the new velocity architecture and the SSD which I'm guessing they could offload certain tasks to. The fact that they got Gears 5 one of the most graphically demanding games on the Xbox running at 120fps is impressive as hell and most minimum PC specs for ram are still below what the series S has. Some of the devs that did express concern like Billy Khan at id said gamers shouldnt worry and that they would always prefer more ram. I dont know i feel like gamers get worried about shit thats completely beyond us, but the fanboys really jumped on this, maybe its an issue down the road but who knows. The only thing to truly take away is playstation first party just won't have this on their plate at all unless there's a pro model already in the pipeline... maybe.

Jordan Goodeye

As soon as the boys said they were hearing a lot of new music in THPS, the first thing I thought of was my favorite band growing up, Billy Talent. They never got much play outside of Canada and Germany and I’m so happy they were included on the soundtrack.

Luke Silletta

Wow Sam FIsher is now in Rainbow 6? This guy seems pretty popular they should give him his own game.

Samuel Ashley

Back in high school I had a friend who had Ninja Gaiden Sigma on the ps3 and I thought it looked really cool, so I was pretty excited to get Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. Then the story came out that unlike the 360 version, the ps3 version of the game was getting almost all the blood removed from the enemies. Back then that bummed me out enough to skip out on the game, so I’m interested in going back into the trilogy now to finally see what I missed out on.

LastStandMedia

I only played the first Ninja Gaiden on Xbox, as far as the Team Ninja games are concerned. So I'd be interested in a trilogy...

Pete

Hey Colin, One downside to the Series S that people don't seem to talk about, is that if/when people opt to go with a Series S + PS5 to get access to both ecosystems, most people will play multi-platform games on the PS5 rather than the Series S, since the PS5 is the more performant machine. Which means 30% cut for Sony rather than MS. Do you think this could come and bite MS in the long run? Cheers, Pete

Jajcen Harris

I mean are you really taking a hit? Ratchet can't even hit 60FPS at 4K...so I think the comparison is close when we are talking about 1440p.

Jajcen Harris

Can we just take time to appreciate how Microsoft has successfully snuck in digital only next gen?! I mean thier assumed mass market console is digital games only. Think they really nailed it. Pretty similar when they were the only console to skip dial up for broadband only back in the day.

Shoulder

'Colin was right'. Yes Ubi Pune has had a torturous development cycle on PoP - custom engine, new team. Like a year behind schedule. I feel for those guys and gals.

Jono Pech

Hey fellas, it was cool to see PS Plus is getting rejigged for the first time in a long time. I've always seen Microsoft's consumer-friendly practices to be their way to catch up to PlayStation, especially with the great value of Game Pass. Sony seems happy to stay away from competing with a similar deal, but I see next-gen going one of three directions and I'd love to know your expectations. Scenario one - PS5 continues to outsell the Xbox at a similar rate, and things stay just the same as they are now. Scenario two - either console sales are somewhat equal, or Xbox jumps ahead, and PlayStation realises they need to catch up, so they bundle PS+ and PS Now in some fashion. Scenario three is the same again, but instead of Sony catching up, Microsoft decides they're giving away too much value and they shrink the Game Pass library, or start to charge way more. So what's the most likely outcome to you? Will PlayStation will ever offer a subscription with the same value as Xbox, or is Game Pass simply too good to last?

Jono Pech

I wasn't sure where to post this for the next episode - guessing there will be a thread so I'll post it in both.

Nokeystothecity

I think Triple A design is stagnating to be more precise, but ultimately I don't feel concerned about design innovation in games. I think we will always see developers push the boundaries in some way or form. There are so many untapped markets, so many holes that the big companies are not filling. When developers try to make titles for a broad audience to satisfy their Publishers, or have a cash-grab, games will more than likely start to look the same, but someone always will come along and shift the paradigm to breathe new life into gaming. And, not to mention, there's money to be made in innovation, look at Rocket League, it's just riskier, look at Dreams, so I understand why the big companies don't go all-in on innovation, and by virtue of that, design tends to stagnate and we see and feel a lot of similarities in games. Horizon Zero Dawn, Days Gone, Spider Man, Ghost of Tsushima, and even Death Stranding are very similar, just with different aesthetics and concepts, but the end result is running around an open-world, sneaking in tall grass, taking out enemy camps, etc. Even the linear games mirror each other a little. Uncharted, The Last of Us, and God of War. They all have companions that love to get in your way, softcore puzzles, and similar narrative beats. All the Ubisoft games have been iterations of themselves for nearly a decade now. Assassin's Creed, Watch Dogs, Ghost Recon, Far Cry. Bethesda and Rockstar too. Maybe this design repetitiveness could just also be a conflict of the developers' ambitions and limitations of the consoles and the current power of this generation. With all that being said, I'm not saying that any of those games are bad (except the Assassin's Creed franchise, that shit sucks), in fact, I own most of those titles and enjoy them all on some level, but the overall zeitgeist of design in gaming is undeniably stuck in a predictable and underwhelming pattern. But for all my criticism and complaints on gaming, I still give games a chance, especially if it's a new IP, and try to find the value in every developers' vision. And most major releases are generally good these days, even if they are all the same-ish. And we all know, as gamers, we're not going to stop gaming, no matter the state of the industry, if all games gradually became Fallout 76-esque and Anthem-like, I'm sure most of us will continue gaming, only a small demographic will pick up a new hobby. (Spoiler Alert, kind of) Also to add to Chris's point, Naughty Dog subverts that expectation in ensuing combat really well in the chapter The Birthday Gift. Another great episode. I can't believe this product is free and I'm very grateful, but honestly, food for thought, if it wasn't free, I would pay for it. And yes that does make me a bonafide Scallywag.

LastStandMedia

The success of both consoles ultimately rides on how many of outside publishers' games are purchased on the systems. So, anything that slants that one way or another is going to be huge.
