We've been recording KnockBack week-in and week-out for more than two years, and while we tell lots of stories about our time with video games, TV shows, movies, toys, and much more, we also include mentions of some very important people: Our childhood friends. These folks aren't just random characters from our past; they're people who helped shape who we were then, and still are today. To celebrate some of the individuals most important to us in our youth, we thought we'd dedicate an episode of KnockBack specifically to them, telling tales of how we met, the times we spent together, and how they molded us. Dedicated listeners of the show have definitely heard these names before, but never in this much detail and with this much love. As always, we hope you enjoy. (Topic begins at 1:04:07.)

In case you missed on Twitter: This episode is late because Dagan lost power yesterday, so we had to wait a day to record! Thank you for your patience. <3

The media will only give a shit about blm for another week or until the next “tragedy” that should get us worked up. I had the same feeling as Dagan did about when Obama was elected. I was hoping that it would bring us together as Americans as a whole. Continue what Dave Chappelle started with the Chappelle show, were we can make jokes about our differences and grow that way. How can black Americans believe that they are oppressed when they can hold the highest office in this country? Well all I can say is from his 8 years in office has only divided us more as a country. I blame this solely on the libs and mainstream media. Then everyone shits on Trump, like he has control of the 100k+ police officers. Where was the blame game when Michael Brown was killed? It was non existent, the same goes for the black and black violence. BLM and the media could care less, because a lot of the inner cities are warzones everyday, because it doesn’t fit the lefts narrative. These cities are run solely from the left and all they produce are horrible schools so the youth cannot escape, their revolving door justice system that put violent criminals on the street and even worse social programs that keep the black person down by giving them just enough money to get by. Last thing before I go, where is the outrage from the left about mass groupings in the riots and protests? Sure don’t seem like a big deal anymore. I’ve been called a murderer and worse but now it’s ok. Double standards are the norm and division is the media’s end goal.

I would consider myself non racist to the point of actually being culturally insensitive (if that makes sense), so this was a good thing for me to hear guys. I would fall into the "all lives matter" category. After heaing this I realise thats not actually the point and ive been looking at it the wrong way. I am more ignorant than I thought in regards to how rampant racism actually still is in the world, It is very frustrating because we all want equality, but it just seems impossible for some reason. Thanks for the insight anyways guys!

Craig Carter

I know the MADtv sketch you're talking about "You are the love of my life.. you are the love of my life, love of my liiiiiffffeeee" lol

Dimitreus Newell

Thank you gentlemen for your input on the first third of this episode.

Colin, huge congratulations to your Patreon being #1 for nerd culture and games. You’ve deserved every ounce and grain of success with this platform. That’s a big deal man, nice job. 👍

Great picture in the thumbnail =)

Friendship reunions are always hard. Especially the Day 1’s where it all suddenly just stops. We all should reconnect in some way when we’re older.

I have to vote for PJ to be on a podcast because I share his love for horror films and also collect VHS horror films. I'm 37 and long for the days of going and looking at horror films to rent at the local video store (I'm from a tiny town so there was no "Blockbuster" ours was called "Billboard Video") so have him on! I'd be friends with him based on that alone. I'm not on social media anymore so I can't direct message Dagan about this or I would do so. Be safe guys, I love you!

LastStandMedia

Well, I believe All Lives Matter, too. But the thing is, that's kind of an intrinsic feeling for most of us. Black Lives Matter is simply saying that, hey... these lives matter, also. Not to the exclusion of others, but rather not to forget they exist. I've softened on this a lot over the years, but I never really had a problem with the BLM proclamation, as it were.

LastStandMedia

That would be ideal. In some way, I think social media has made us lazier, because we feel like we're with other people even though we aren't.

Travis B

Nailed the intro. Do us a favor and become a politician! Or at the very least, keep talking man!

My childhood best friend just passed away this week. I will definitely be giving this a listen and trying to remember all the great memories I had with him.

Ian (616Entertainment)

I left a very long comment regarding the first hour that I was really looking forward to hearing your response to. I just came back to the page and it's... gone. Sweet. It was up for like 5 minutes and now it's gone. I've heard people say Patreon sucks but this is the first time I'm experiencing it. Very, very upsetting.

Ian (616Entertainment)

On a positive note, though, huge congratulations on becoming the #1 nerd culture Patreon in the world. That's incredible, and I'm extremely proud to have been here since day one. You work so hard, and your success is well earned.

Gerald Stemo

Adlai Stevenson I was the vice president under Grover Cleveland's second term. Adlai Stevenson II was his grandson. Just thought I would make that correction. Thanks for the Great Podcast.

At some point in your childhood you and your friends went outside to play together for the last time...😭

Angel M Rivera

I still hang out with my childhood friends. Well, the one's that are still alive and haven't been taken by the streets 😭

Explosivebob

Knockback has such a unique vibe for a podcast. I joined the patreon for sacred symbols and knockback was such a nice surprise to find.

Andres

Kudos to Dagan for being able to empathize with the plight of Black Americans far more than Colin. Love your work Colin but that's how you came off in that discussion.

Jake Woods

Colin, I think your perspective needs a bit more nuance. First, to spend so much time on "Antifa" which is not a thing with some sort of card membership like you think, with a passing glance at how the cops are acting towards peaceful protests is a strange look. Cops are literally tax funded and they are surpressing speech. The looters are just some idiots. Plus they are enforcing curfews basically giving cops the go ahead to attack protestors cause now they're breaking a law that none of us signed up for. Second, for the few rioters who are rioting you gotta ask.... why? You don't address that. Third, defund the police doesn't mean get rid of police. It means reallocate funds towards mental health, drug addiction clinics, maybe a new agency to deal with homeless. Cause lets face it, the police have more on their plate than they should. So, I hope my poor grammar makes sense and that I don't get banned. Lol

LastStandMedia

This idea that Antifa isn't organized or "real" is of course a fallacy, as covered by Lara Logan and other journalists and authors. I'm also pretty sure they just occupied Seattle City Hall and created a six square block "independent" zone in the middle of the city. Antifa is real. Just because there isn't an Antifa ID doesn't mean it's not real. There aren't a "few" rioters. There are thousands. There is no excuse for the violent, looting, arson, assault, etc., any more than there's an excuse for cops to rough up and kill innocent people. I stand in condemnation of all violence, but I'm not so easily cowed as to ignore the literally billions of dollars in damage done by the rioters, the 20+ deaths that happened because of them, or the thousands of innocent victims who saw their business, or home, or car, or place of business burst into flames. If "defund the police" doesn't mean "defund the police," then may I humbly suggest a different word. Words have predetermined meanings; that's the idea of language. And there are plenty of people using that verbiage that do agree with it in the literal sense. If you want change, you've gotta market better. "Police reform," for instance. A vast majority of Americans don't want police to lose any of their funding; indeed, polling shows that most Americans want cops to get more money, especially after all of this. Hell, San Diego City Council just voted 8-1 to increase their own police budget, after watching what happened all over the country. They won't be the last municipality to do so.

Jake Woods

There aren't a "few" bad cops there are thousands. How many ptotests need to happen before change happens? You have to understand the frustrations of the people here. I agree violence is not the answer, but I think youre missing the bigger picture. People understood why Malcom X did what he did and Malcom X was not the underlying issue. The underlying issue then and now is systemic racism and police brutality. I watched a pest control worker get shot to death by a police man with a gun that had "Youre fucked" inscribed on it. in my home state of Arizona while he was on the floor crying and following directions. Ive been pulled over more time than I can count when driving with my black friends and almost never whilst driving alone. I watched the cops topple over a 75 year old man and the president say he's probably antifa and fell harder than he was pushed. The cops have killed over 5000 people since 2015. Jails are at capacity. As Americans we are supposed to stand up against tyranny and this is absolutely tyranny.

Jake Woods

Also, why is antifa considered a terrorist organization while the KKK is good to go?

Kevin McChesney

This comment is for Dagan and I hope you see this. Your focus on the riots/looting aspect of the situation is completely misguided. We tried peaceful protest and it didn’t work. It was completely ignored and then the police force were the ones who escalated the violence with gas, smoke bombs and rubber bullets. Peaceful protests can be ignored but riots can’t. There would have been absolutely no justice for Floyd had the situation not escalated. The political right would have continued to ignore the plight of POC and the murderer would have continued to live a free man. I think you need to think deeper about what happened because I think you’re on the wrong side of this particular position.

Cash

Well, Antifa has more active members, the KKK is largely irrelevant. Are you really telling me you're seeing all this KKK presence on the news?

Dee Han

I was disappointed when I heard Dagan say that (paraphrasing) we should allow for that explosion following an injustice, allow for windows to be broken, etc. That “buffer” as he calls it. Should we allow that for every other injustice as well? And how far should we let that “buffer”? People died during that “buffer”, livelihoods and lives were lost. All that happened because of this type of attitude where this violence is ok.

Anthony Masters

Although undesirable, most fights for independence or change do incur casualties. South Africans fighting against apartheid , the civil rights movement, even the Hong Kong protests all had people die. If we never participated in activities we perceived as dangerous, how many things would never happen?

Jake Woods

I guess "Cash" is just into defending the KKK. You're an idiot for that.

Cash

Yeah, I'm really defending them. They're largely irrelevant, don't give them any oxygen.

LastStandMedia

I don't agree that there are thousands of "bad" cops, as you're describing them. I just don't think that's true.

LastStandMedia

I have no problem with the KKK being designated a terrorist organization, but the KKK barely exists in the 21st century. It's not even a notable entity, as I understand it, and hasn't been for decades. I'm sure there are other white supremacist organizations that could be targeted, though.

LastStandMedia

Just because it's happened doesn't mean it has to happen. Not all revolutions are the same, nor is every righted injustice.

Anthony Masters

Absolutely - But that would require an oppressive regime to recognise the error of its policies, and I don’t think humanity is there yet. In a revolution, you have the side fighting for change and the side fighting to keep the status-quo. They are the same in that way. Even the suffragettes had to burn shit down.
