Death Stranding is finally here, and we use the word "finally" lightly. Conceived and developed at light speed compared to many of its AAA contemporaries, Hideo Kojima's new game came to fruition relatively quickly, and with lots of expectations in tow. What it delivers is one of the most unusual experiences we've ever played. And we mean that in the best way possible. So join us as we gush about Death Stranding for a while, and stay with us as we work through the PlayStation news of the week, from a corporate reshuffle at Sony HQ to an all-new first party studio working on PS5 games from Southeast Asia. Then, listener questions round-out the episode, per usual, with a requiem for PlayStation Vue, a lesson on how the Trophy system works, the possibility of Ghost of Tsushima preempting The Last of Us: Part II, and an unfortunate (albeit necessary) revisiting of last week's show, in which a listener pooped his pants on a date. (Turns out there's more to say about that, for some reason.)

I’m glad we’re getting a follow up to the poop story because I was really wondering how that turned out.

Nice title. Just read about the move, I hope everything goes as smooth as possible for you Colin. Is Erin moving with you?

Lets make the magic happen.

This show makes my morning coffee taste better!

Damn four 2-hour long episodes of SS in a row. It’s a Christmas miracle!

Andrew Christensen

You guys must not be watching a whole lot of ESPN, because I'm pretty sure 1of every 4 or 5 commercials on ESPN is for Jedi Fallen order.

Anonymous

Just a fyi, you can hold L1 for a bit and it will show you a destination marker on the world.

LastStandMedia

Thank you! Erin has some personal and professional obligations in Southern California, so she'll be staying behind for the time being.

The theme and message of Death Stranding is so timely. It’s definitely clicking with me on a deep level. I am only a few chapters in, but I didn’t expect the game to have such a vibe of positivity. We can choose to make our online communities this way. We can also choose not to be dragged down by all the negativity. This is why CLS is a big part of my weekly entertainment. I have intentionally disconnected from a lot of things other than sports gossip and CLS. Aesthetically, I think Death Stranding is a true accomplishment. I also agree with Chris and the Shadow of the Colossus reference. I had also recalled how that game was really two games in one, and the traversal part was really exciting. I will say that Death Stranding begins very slow and cutscene heavy in the beginning hours as they slowly roll out game mechanics. Once it starts to click, I think the game is extremely fun and addicting. I love planning out my gear, plotting the course, and then being surprised by what the game throws at me and improvising. I love raiding the Mule camps and returning people’s lost gear. A high point was being chased while going full speed on my bike loaded up with recaptured gear on my back.

Mitch Krassin

I had seen Playstation tweet about Romancing Saga and I saw the logo. Not going to lie I legit read it originally as Romancing Salsa and just wrote it off initially.

Luke Bernhard

Gotta disagree on the advertising for Fallen Order. I have seen a ton of advertising for it on FB, Youtube, and in commercials during NFL games (the only TV I watch since I only have antennae. While I agree, especially after the shitbag that was the Last Jedi, people might be Star Wars'd out - this game has definitely been well-advertised for - at least in my feeds.

My final word on the shitty underwear: Last week you and Chris said you hoped the date didn't go well, positing that perhaps the woman would be greeted with an unwelcome surprise should things get intimate. That implies the presence of shitty undies! I love you both.

Big Swingin' Rick

Great show boys, on SS+ last week you mentioned at one point that Chris was in NY. It was an offhanded remark but that gave it away that you guys were recording remotely

LastStandMedia

Hey! I reuploaded the audio for this episode so the credits at the end reflect November's producers. There are no other material changes to the show, but wanted to let y'all know in case there are any issues, RSS is acting weird, etc. Thank you!

Brent

Great discussion on DS. I am the same way in that I can’t explain the reason why I like it but it is very addictive and strangely satisfying. I think due to how you traverse the environment (terrain variation, wear on boots, balancing cargo, battery life, timefall, many more...) you feel more connected to the world. Unlike for example assassins creed where it seems like you’re just sprinting across terrain with no consequences following a map marker. The world in DS feels dangerous and unpredictable which allows for some great gaming moments and trying to carefully plot your routes and the gear that you take.

DB Cooper

Death Stranding is exactly why I agree with you that review outlets should get rid of numerical scores. Never have I played a game with such divisive reviews that I can lean with on each side (though I really enjoy the game). A "not for everyone" game like this just shows reviews that discuss the game and all involved aspects would do more for people than a numerical score. Just a thought.... Great episode as always!

Will Hahn

Hey Colin, Great episode. Just one quick thing. Is there a way to access the community feed/posts on the Patreon App? Ever since the app had an update, I can’t even find the community section. Maybe I’m dumb and it’s right in front of me, but I’m having an issue trying to access that certain tab. I know it’s been said time and time again, but the Patreon app is kind of trash lol.

FitzIsCoy

Firstly, congrats on pulling off remote podcasting and making it seamless for many of us. The reveal felt like the ending of Watchmen where after his villain monologue and the heroes saying "you won't get away with this!" Ozymandius says, "what do you take me for? some sort of comicbook villain? This was done weeks ago". Well done! Now, my question is about Scratt's Nutty Adventure. I got excited for this game after hearing you guys talk about this a few episodes ago and said it was being published by Bandai Namco. I remember Colin saying it looked similar to the Spyro games and it looked fun. I looked up the game and was stoked. I waited for game reviews and game review videos and got nothing. Even now it is very difficult a decent review for this game. Why is that? "Ice Age" seems like it should be mainstream enough to get a review. For some games, even if I don't end up buying them or have no intention to buy them, I love seeing/reading reviews. Its a bummer that Scratt's Nutty Adventure and other games don't get a chance to get highlighted (or exposed) in this way.

Jeff Pollard

It took me a long time to build up the courage to submit a question. lol Thanks for selecting mine and explaining the trophy system. I like going after trophies and achievements. I think, in many cases, they allow you to get even more out of a game.

Michal Dudic

CRPGs coming to consoles is indeed very exciting. Playing them is like a day at a spa. If you're ever going to play just one, make it Baldur's Gate 2. But don't miss out on Disco Elysium next year no matter what, it's this year's goty (and reasonably short).

Sam Dunham

One needs no further evidence that Sony dropped the ball on PlayStation Vue marketing than Colin saying, "It makes it seem as though, and I guess you do, need a PlayStation device to use it." No. You don't. Vue is available on Roku, TVs, etc... I understand WHY Sony branded Vue with PlayStation (at the time, the PlayStation brand was on fire compared to the Sony brand). But it was a massive miscalculation. If you put "PlayStation" in the name, people are going to assume you need a PlayStation to use it. That, coupled with increasing costs from content providers to carry their channels, was a recipe for failure. I was hoping they could weather the storm long enough for another player to get knocked out of the market, as Vue is/was arguably the best "Cable-like" offering on the market, but alas, it wasn't in the cards.

My favorite reoccurring bit is when someone who shares a last name with someone or something famous and Colin proceeds to thank that person for whatever that thing is. I don't know why but the "Kellogg" bit had me laughing for a good minute.

Philip Andersen

If Pokemon had a platinum trophy for getting all pokemon.... I would easily do 300h or even more if they had everyone.... I’ve done it twice in the past; gen2/crystal and gen3/sapphire. 😜

Philip Andersen

I think it was probably much harder for Guerrilla to handle that their lead producer for horizon zero dawn passed away suddenly than Herman leaving the company. Will be interesting how the sequel will turn out now tho.

Chad Lewis

Still can’t get over you being scared of kids 😂

NeO JD

“They’re just children. They’re going to be depressed real soon.” Lmfao. Chris makes a good point about how EA treats Respawn. I’d hope to see Vince and team leave if they ever can. Having the review embargo be the day it comes out is sketchy. All these Sony Corporate shakeups have me worried. I’m not sure what to expect.

LastStandMedia

It's true. You really need to pay attention to things. I don't know that I've ever studied an environment quite like I have in Death Stranding, merely because it's a necessity to play and survive.

Nlindz27

I'm positive you knew private division was a Take Two owned publisher as i'm sure you mentioned it on the show a few weeks back, this is the only show i listen too so i can't think where else i would have heard it

Jimmy Champane

I loved the deep conversation about Death Stranding in this episode. I haven't picked it up yet but I think it's going to be the game I play when I have time off at Christmas. Anyway, congrats on the move away from Cali. I often question how long I can last out here.

Daniel Rivas

I’m late as hell but I’m just happy to hear you’re returning to Nioh. It’s time to take Onryoki down.

Barrel Titor

What I hate about trophies now. The notification leaves an extra gap instead of being flush against the corner of the screen. Like it was on the PS3. Dumbest UI decision.

Context Should Matter

1:45:50 Tried looking for the Andrew Ryan interview and I kept getting the Bioshock character info. It's actually the Jim Ryan interview. Link below. https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2019-11-07-sonys-jim-ryan-we-had-to-make-changes-to-deliver-our-ps5-dream

At 3:06 is that an editing joke? If so well played

Death Stranding is hardly anything new. It’s just a bunch of ideas cobbled together from other games. The Parcel Delivery Game might as well be American Truck Simulator. Taking care of the Baby by shaking your controller? Yakuza 6 already did that like 2 years ago. Building stuff and surviving? Welcome to Fortnite and every other survival game. Being dragged into black tar by beings from another world? Oh hello ICO on PS2. I feel like this game has done absolutely nothing new. It’s just borrowed a bunch of ideas from other games and tried to incorporate them into something that is a complete and utter mess. Way too systems heavy and barely fun to play. But more than that, the story is about as deep as a puddle. And worse still, practically bashes you over your head with every last meaning to the point where it feels like Kojima thinks his audience is too stupid to get it. If my post sounds vitriolic that’s because it is. Death Stranding sucks. It’s about as deep as a puddle and is hardly a new genre as Kojima likes to claim. And this isn’t because I’m some ignorant hick that just likes his first person shooters like Kojima claims. I’m all for games that break the mould and try new things. Hell, I like Shenmue for crying out loud and it was the definition of boring walking and talking sim back in the day by most in the mainstream. I like games that do break the mould and try something different. But I don’t see anything new here. Just a bunch of ideas other games have already experiemented with wrapped in a layer of pretentious story telling. I’d rather just play American Truck Simulator. At least it doesn’t get up its own ass and pretend to be something more than it actually is. Love the show, but when it comes to Death Stranding? The eight or nine hours I played of it did not leave good impressions for me. Just feels like a chore not worth my time.

Orion88

Per the PS Vue, Colin you mentioned a playstation is required but that’s not true, you can download the app directly to a Roku or smart tv. What’s outrageous is that on amazon right now, there are Insignia smart TVs for sale that come with playstation Vue built in! How pissed must be people who bought those TVs with the plan to use the service!

LastStandMedia

See, if Switch had some sort of Achievement system, who knows where I'd be with that handheld right now?

LastStandMedia

The good news for Respawn, at least, is that they're being heavily used, so they seem safe.

LastStandMedia

"It's just a bunch of ideas cobbled together from other games" is really just about any game. That said, in my 30+ years of gaming, I've never played anything like Death Stranding. I won't say nothing like it exists, but I don't think anything does!

LastStandMedia

Someone already said this above, but you should submit a correction for next week, if it pleases you!

Jose Garcia

Definitely not mad that you’re moving- happy for you! You bastuuuuuurd
