It's the calm before the storm, and we're looking to keep ourselves busy in the wake of Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Spider-Man. Colin took the unusual step of starting up Mass Effect Andromeda to pass the time. Did he make such a decision because he hates himself? We discuss. But beyond that, of course, there's news galore to go over. Spider-Man is getting New Game+, PS4 firmware 6.0 is in the wild, Assassin's Creed ports are PS4-bound... and we apparently scarred someone by discussing the Human Centipede last week. All of that news (plus much more) is accompanied by your questions, comments, and concerns. Let's enjoy the lull while we can, shall we?

Another great episode. (commented 2 seconds after posting, I just have a good feeling about this one)

I second that Tyler

First time getting an episode early now that I'm a Patreon supporter! This feels.....great!!!

Tony Colton

Flying to Birmingham for EXG in the morning so this is perfect in-flight listening 🤓

Craig Carter

Best title for Sacred Symbols so far.. I’d name my podcast Craig hates himself episode 1,2,3 etc etc. (Andromeda isn’t THAT bad)

Kenneth Oms

Now when i have a child, i can play last weeks episode when they're ready for the Human Centipede talk. Also, I enjoyed Dragon Age: Origins more than any of the other ones of the franchise. It felt like a good RPG to me, and even the expansions felt like true expansions. I always felt like it was one of the last true Bioware game. #MTGA

Matthew Clarkson

Pretty sure I’ll be on my own at work so I can listen while working.

Tyler

I was eating a delicious banana and then the human centipede talk began and I immediately lost my appetite....thanks, guys.

Joey Finelli

My favorite part of these episodes are the crappy new games you guys read.

Ian (616Entertainment)

I make my own schedule at work, and I’ve been purposely giving myself Tuesdays off recently because my girlfriend works all day and SS drops early. This gives me time to clean the house, do my laundry, yadda yadda, and get the show hot off the presses. You guys truly are making Tuesdays great again. On the Amalur front, I was going to write in and bring up that THQ basically said “yea we bought it but we don’t know what the fuck to do with it lol” but I knew you’d cover it anyway, and you said basically the same thing, that they’re just grabbing shit to grab it. I’m going back and playing Amalur a third time right now to get the Platinum and I’m having a blast. I never checked out the 2 DLC packs (Legend of Dead Kel and Teeth of Naros) and I intend to do so. I was even worried they wouldn’t be purchasable on the PSN anymore, but they are, luckily. Will you ever venture back into Amalur, Colin? And if it’s not too early to ask, what’s on the docket for SQ next week? Video essay or gameplay? Have a good day!

Owen

What Chris said about how everything you turn on being depressing... fucking thank you! - I stopped watching season 2 of West World this year cus I was just tired of being depressed. I've discovered I can only consume so much depressing ass content. Spider-Man was just... chill, and it still had it's depressing moments, but we need shit like this that leaves you with a feeling that not everything has to be negative, and edgy. -- Thanks for talking about this, I just wish people wouldn't always try and push narratives where there doesn't need to be one.

Brett Carlson

Colin wanted to get you take on the putrid Kotaku article about how Spiderman PS4 isnt political enough, and doesnt take a big enough stance. Basically the article says Spidermans love for police in the game is out of touch with reality. Can I not just go to a website about games and read actual thoughts on video games. How does any of that impact a damn game about a kid who gets bitten by a spider and start s shooting webs around the city. Hard issues should be tackled in our medium but I'm really disenchanted with the Polygons and Kotakus of the world where every article NEEDS to have some sort of political agenda. It's a game made by insomniac. You know the same studio who made action games with a marsupial main character and a robot sidekick.

Owen

Also Celeste is fantastic top 5 games this year for me. In my talks for GOTY

Jayce Tamulevich

Maybe this was from an earlier firmware update, but I was so pleased when I went to search for something on PSN recently and got a real virtual keyboard instead of that god awful column of letters. Was that a change in 6.0?

Matthew Perry

Actually I think that one was on a previous update !

LastStandMedia

I liked what Chris had to say, as well. I love political games and games with a message, but not every game has to have politics embedded in it, or any sort of message.

LastStandMedia

I think games media would be wise to focus on what games are trying to do, and how they might fail in those attempts, as opposed to solely writing about what they wish games did. It's weird.

LastStandMedia

That actually happened mid-update, as far as I know. To my knowledge, 6.0 literally "improves stability," and that's it.

George

Just being totally honest, I feel like the Human Centipede question is not particularly difficult to answer at all. I wouldn't voluntarily eat anybody's shit. But, if I had to eat someone's shit, and I get to choose whose shit, I'm gonna pick someone like Jennifer Lopez, or Jessica Alba, or Emily Ratajkowski etc. It's a 'make the best of a bad situation' type deal. And then for behind you'd obviously pick someone you hate or who sucks, like Trump or Osama bin Laden etc. Just my 2¢.

Marcus Brown

Like Chris I too am terrified of the ocean. I feared you wouldn't be to high on Andromeda for it's not even close to the original trilogy but I found a lot of fun in it. I'm super hyped for A.C. and I hope you dive back in I would love to know your thoughts! Also I tried to send you a friend request but unsurprisingly your maxed out lol. I'm happy with a follow. As always great show and thanks for everything.

I like the content and these episodes do make Tuesday great again.

"Fucking.. Stupid Fish."

Black flag is the best assassins creed game in that series. Don’t @ me

Jason Pettet

Skippy extra crunchy is the only peanut butter in the Pettet household.

I lawled at "Shut up, nerd - we're going to space".

Not sure if either of you remember this, but that Blind game you advertised sounds like an iPhone game that was out years ago called Papa Sangre. It required headphones or stereo speakers to play where you use sound to avoid being devoured by a monster you cant see. You used the screen to control your characters footsteps. It was a great game actually, but unfortunately it, and its sequel, arent on any smartphone app store anymore. Not sure why. Kinda doubt I'll be buying a VR headset to play Blind, tbh.

Jason Stafford

On the subject of Assassin's Creed, if you're not a fan of the way AC used to play, you probably want to stay away from Syndicate. I'm no expert by any means, but Origins (Egypt) is where things really changed. Origins is much more like a narrative-driven, 3rd person action rpg. Odyssey (Greece) appears to be an extrapolation of that. To be truthful, I never really got into AC previously, and had given up on it after Syndicate, but Origins tickled my fancy quite a bit.

Matthew Perry

Any thoughts on the news with the playstation mini coming out in December ? I like the whole concept but not too hot on the 20 games they are releasing with it !

Tyson Williams

AC Origins was actually when people started liking AC again, Syndicate is basically the same as the rest but Origin was a big change in the series. I would strongly recommend you try to jump back in with Origins

I started listening to Car Talk because of this episode and it is hilarious. Glad to be new supporter on here.

LastStandMedia

Thank you for the advice. Thankfully, I have a full smorgasbord of games to keep me busy in the interim.

Daddy Dilkers

Hello Colin and Chris! I was just about to play Rainbow Six Siege but had to take the time to delete 75gb off of my hard drive to download the 1.4gb update. When it finally started downloading it finished in about a minute and then proceeded to “copy” the update for over 20 minutes. This is fucking unacceptable. I absolutely love PlayStation but if this nonsense is still happening by the time the PS5 comes out I will start looking towards gaming on PC. What are your thoughts on this? Do you have these problems? All of my friends do. I hope Xbox makes their next console better than the Xbone so Sony will be forced to improve. Thanks guys, you’re the handsomest boys in video games.

bk200jj

Car Talk is the polar opposite of being the last person in a human centipede.

Tony Colton

Great episode cheers lads. Colin plz plz make a fireside chat happen with Lorne Lanning. Always loved the back and forth between u guys in the KF days 👍

Nate McKinney

"Shut up, Nerd, we're going to fucking space!" And I'm dead. Fucking dead. Almost spit water out all over my desk. Great episode, guys!

Brett Gomolka

Im not sure if anyone commented about this but i wanted to make you aware of a south park episode about Apple and the human-centipede movie. Of course like more SP plots this one is silly, Stan doesn't read the terms of service(who has time) for the new Itunes update but agrees to it, of course all the other kids declined the terms of service after reading the fine print. Long story story Stan ends up being ass to mouth with another man forming Steve Jobs's greatest creation the human-centipad. Thanks for the great content as always guys -Brett

The banter is getting better week by week boys. Keep putting numbers on the board

Colin, read the book “What a Fish Knows”. Fish do feel pain and are way smarter than most people think!

In reference to your discussion on Dragon Age, Dragon Age Inquisition got GOTY from IGN the year it came out. I don’t know how well it did sales-wise but I do know it made something of a splash when it came out.

John Lynch

Colin, love the epsisode as always You mentioned space travel excites you and the expanse is what got you to play Andromeda, and so I’m curious as I too love space travel, what books would you recommend about space travel? I’m a huge interstellar fan, loved the Martian after you mentioned it before and I’m looking for books that follow a similar vein. Thanks guys and keep up the good work! Chris I think you’re doing amazing and you guys are starting to grow and organic rhetoric and it’s starting to show

Hi guys, Thanks for making Friday's great as well. One thing Colin, I think you are wrong regarding the lack of concern about lootbox regulation and the recent involvement by a couple of European nations in the news recently. So far it's been primarily Scandinavian countries and a few big players like France investigating this. This should be a concern as more and more European nations are getting worked up about thus. The EU as a whole is not scared to make massive changes to existing law, look at the recent GDPR changes. Once Germany get's involved, shit will really hit the fan for big publishers. Just from my experience, they are extremely stringent on public policy and tend to lead on these types of policy changes. I can see this becoming a really big issue in the next year or so. And hopefully the furore will categorically kill the "Oh it's not gambling" bullshit that gets trotted out each time these companies get pushed on this.

LastStandMedia

Packing For Mars by Mary Roach is a great place to start. Thanks for listening (and for your kind words)!

LastStandMedia

I need to slow my life down a bit, because I don't even remember talking about lootboxes and regulation on this episode (or any other one).

I hate gone home, *NOT* for its lesbian relationship but for two factors: 1. It's intital advertising campaign was very "this is a horror game" which we know now is complete BS. 2. The romance while interesting they chose to go with a lesbian couple wasn't exactly all that interesting or even gripping outside of that factor, it was two people who love each other who almost fell apart after one decided to try and join the military but then they run away together. That's it. I understand and respect that you love it Colin and it's one of your favorites but I personally can't stand it and find it to be a huge missed opportunity especially since they weren't frank about it until after release. Also the factor we were playing a secondary character to the relationship while also being a third party observing this situation really felt disconnected, it felt like finding your your sister's best friend who you met twice came out as lesbian. Great for them(not sarcastic in any way) ...but I'm too distant from this to feel much more that that. Mind you I'm a bisexual man so I understand it's hard to come out but it wasn't horrible for me. Unrelated to my feeling about gone home: Also to that reader's question about culture of what journalist jump on and by extension all those journalist who jump on gaming there already was a "Goddess of war" it was called heavenly sword by Ninja theory, it was a decent launch window game for ps3 and hellblade for ps4 is a decent in some ways follow up to heavenly sword and even did the Norse setting . actually wish those people would go play those games. /end mini rant

That black guy

As for why people don't positively view depression quest as a game is unlike even Zork or the old DnD text adventure myou literally are going through a few days of the life of a depressed person that is slowly sinking deeper into their depression and its got one solitary ending. I support twine(the program used to create DQ) here on Patreon and I've dug into it myself. I know you can make super complex text based adventures who have branches and super different endings that take every choice into it, the only limit is how much time and effort you as a creator put into it and your grasp of the language you're making it in. You could make a Harry Potter fan adventure and have it end so Harry ends up expelled and imprisoned because he used advada Kardavra on Draco Malfoy in potions class , or he chooses to become house slyterin and actually the next dark lord or simply he makes choices that make Neville Longbottom have to step up as the hero and he instead slowly becomes a background character in the fight against voldermort until the final battle. So in straight reasons people shit on DQ as a game because it's much more of a text based version of a visual novel with choices that lead back to the same narrative with no change, than a game.

John Lynch

Another great episode. Just wanted to say I was glad to hear you say that many writers don’t have anything interesting to write about other than inciting outrage. I’ve just recently been noticing that writers were trying to outrage intentionally but I have long felt that many writers in the industry don’t know about games. It’s one thing to make an honest mistake but the articles are just frequently wrong and constantly have incorrect information in them. They’ve reminded me of GameStop employees that just work at the store but don’t really know or understand games

LastStandMedia

I liked Heavenly Sword. As for Gone Home, well... it's the way the story is told tangentially and through exploration that makes it work, so I'm afraid I don't really understand your complaints, though you're entitled to 'em!

LastStandMedia

Most writers working at game websites today categorically know very little about video games. It would be funny as hell to do a video game Jeopardy! with them, and prove it. =)

That black guy

Heavenly sword: I know you do, I remember your love for it back on IGN and how you'd fondly talk about it when Ninja theory was brought up in the podcast beyond days. That comment was more directed at the people who was being talked about. I understand you like it for That aspect and sometimes it works for me but for gone home, it didn't. it's like ice or no ice situation , I personally don't mind the dilution and depending on the drink actually enjoy the dilution (a strong tea or a hi c/kool-aid sugary drink). I felt too disconnected, to keep up i WHT the previous metaphor, I needed the ice.
