Last month's Patreon-exclusive podcast was an episode of Fireside Chats, so this time around, I thought I'd do an episode of KnockBack!

Today, I brought my best friend Ramon out of the bullpen to discuss a beloved movie trilogy from our childhood: The Mighty Ducks! We watched all three movies in sequence, and stopped in between each movie to record our thoughts.

I present to you these unnecessarily extensive and surprisingly deep thoughts on The Mighty Ducks. Enjoy.

I think the reason they lost the championship game in the first movie is because Bombay was in the shootout and since he didn’t score the game was over.

Being a St. Paul native and owning a small business in St. Paul, I gotta say the twin cities got a lot going on. I'm from MN and know exactly what the cake eater line is referencing. It is an insult directed toward kids from Edina, MN which is a very affluent suburb of Minneapolis. Cake eater comes from a stereotype that rich people eat cake. When I was in HS, this term came up ALOT whenever Edina would come up in conversations.

It's a little confusing to be honest, because the scoreboard is I believe tied in the footage, and as someone who grew up playing youth hockey, travel hockey, etc. year-round from ages 6-18, there was no such thing as a shootout at any level. My takeaway -- although it's probably wrong -- is that he had a penalty shot, he missed, and they lost later. But the other team celebrates when he misses. I dunno. LOL.

Thanks so much for these exclusives Colin. By the way I been meaning to say this but it is incredible how Dagan has never been on a podcast before this one. It’s crazy how natural it comes to him. Obviously been listening to you for years so we know what you bring to the table but if you have never said anything I would have thought he had his own show before this one.

Such a great podcast! My brother and I used to love these movies growing up, and my dad, who played hockey for 10 years, used to get angry at us for watching them so much. Basically he thought they were an absolutely ridiculous mockery of the sport... which they are haha. I still remember him saying shit like “nobody would ever have time to set up a knuckle puck” and “the Flying V is offside”... lol this was a fun trip down memory lane. I do have to say, though, that these movies certainly contributed to our passion for the sport, and my brother now works for the Blues. So, I’ve got to give the movies a lot of credit for sparking a love for hockey in kids from my generation. One other great insane moment you guys didn’t mention... the silent drama when Julie makes the save during the shootout at the end of D2... did it go in or not?! As if anyone in the crowd on that end of the ice wouldn’t immediately be able to tell... haha. Anyways - this made my day! Thanks for all your great content, Colin.

What Ramon mentions about the dialogue being lost on you is so true. When I go back and watch Disney movies and the like as a 30 year old man, it happens all the time where I hear a line and I'm like "I just got that..." Look at Aladdin and how many things the Genie says throughout the course of that movie, it's nuts.

I recently bought this trilogy because it was $15 for all 3 DVD’s on Amazon. I have to give all the movies one thing, those musical scores are damn good. Especially the shootout music in D2. I also always laugh at the end of D3 when the Ducks banner drops over the Warriors banner and Dwayne says in that accent “Look what Bombay did,” but only Charlie saw Bombay. Like how do you know Bombay did that shit, and how did Bombay secretly put a banner that could fall with no pull string exactly at the moment the JV won, if they won? Still classic movies.

This was so much fun. I’ve only seen the first one, and it had to have been like 20 years ago. Hearing you two nimrods talk about these fucking movies for an hour and a half made my day. Oh man. Ramon is the fucking best. That’s a special kind of friendship, when you pitch “hey, do you want to watch an entire trilogy back to back to back and review them as we go?” and they respond “yea dude.” Hahaha

You hit on something, which is that the rise in hockey with the mainstream in the '90s had at least something to do with The Mighty Ducks. Which is awesome. I played hockey starting very young, so I was on a travel team when D2 came out, and I remember for a few practices people were trying the knucklepuck. It was ridiculous. Never saw it attempted in a game. =D

Finished all the movies 3 was definitely the weakest but when Bombay was back for a little bit it was my favorite part of the trilogy.

Yeah and it was awesome to see how much Bombay had grown since the last film instead of a repeat of him becoming a shit head and redeeming himself

As a kid I always loved D2 because of the stuff that makes it weird now. But even back then some of the plot wholes were hard to ignore. Like Russ being added at the last minute and the team being allowed to change into Duck uniforms at the end.
