On today's episode of KnockBack, Dagan and I veer back into the realm of video games, and reach back toward one of our absolute favorite consoles: The NES. With a ton of games in its library, it makes sense that some titles would go underappreciated, unnoticed, or underrated. This podcast is dedicated to the latter, specifically: Underrated NES games -- well-known or otherwise -- that don't get the love they deserve.

Initial knee-jerk game that popped into my mind. Willow. That game was WAY better than it should have been and young me got tons of mileage out of it.

Can't wait to see if they mention Little Nemo: The Dream Master. It's one of the earliest games I remember playing, and it creeped me the heck out.

Excited to hear this one! I love the NES but I don't know many games under the radar, besides Guardian Legend and a few other that I'm sure you guys will mention. Thanks for making Thursdays great guys!

Joey Finelli

The Lion King! Easiest the hardest game i've ever played.

Jordan Falduto

This is awesome. Next up underrated SNES then PS1?? I've really enjoyed Knockback so far - thank you for the additional content, Colin!

Bryan Finck

Just starting but my vote is for Crystalis, loved that game so much.

We played the hell out of Faxanadu back then. Now I’m waiting for the inevitable snes episode of this. Curious to find out if you two were x-band gamers

Anton Kaye

Jackal! My brother and I played this like crazy.

Will Hahn

I need to try the Castlevanyia games! I feel like I’m really missing out. Oh and when you said “Castlevanyia 3 is hard game... but you can be it, if you aren’t a bitch.” 😂 Great stuff, guys!

Kenny Gutzler

I remember getting through the water part of TMNT (1989) - such a satisfying gaming moment for me as a kid.

Jason Kelley

I'm loving Knockback so much. When I first heard of the show, I thought, "Man, I don't want to listen to Colin's stupid brother. C'mon!" But it turns out, I love Dagan!

Is it blasphemy to say Super Mario 2 is a better than the original? Super Mario Bros was more important and groundbreaking obviously but I’d rather play 2 any day.

BettyAnn Moriarty

I love him too! (So glad the boys are doing this together. Makes a mom happy. )😉❤️❤️

BettyAnn Moriarty

Sorry, out if order- was replying to Jason. 😬

I'm glad you're enjoying the show, and enjoying what Dagan brings to the table. He's so fucking good at this. I love it.

LastStandMedia

Blasphemous? No. I think you're right: You've gotta separate importance from greatness. I actually think they're both important and they're both great, but I'd rather play SMB2.

Jason Kelley

Every time I hear Colin read the names of his Patrons, when he gets to you, I’m like, “Awww, that’s his Mom!!!!”

Is the podcast not showing up in anyone else's podcast feed?

You are 100% right about Castlevania 2 and Zelda 2. Every time I hear in podcasts and general gaming discussions about how those games are not good it blows my mind. Those are two of my favorite games on the NES. I will never forget when my brother and I played Castlevania 2 for the first time and it turned night time and we got terrified because the enemies all of a sudden took more damage. Our first instincts were to go back to the safety of the town only to find out all the doors are locked and there are monsters so we just have to survive the night. What an awesome game.

As a kid I couldn’t even beat World 1-2 in SMB2 USA, the game was cryptic and a lot of stuff never made sense for me, such as eggs and flying carpets. So I never cared for the game and moved on to other platformer games. I still appreciate what it established with characters and their personalities etc. as eg. Luigi has since been my favorite, some say ”slippier” the same way Mario 3 has been criticized for, but I feel in both, the flow of the game changes and I really like that, and Luigi jumps higher, which is just even better.

LastStandMedia

That's a really interesting point. I wonder if I would have found my way through the game if not for Dagan? Never thought about it.

Omar Rosa

any chance you can post the list?

6 year old me could not get passed the swimming part in TMNT. Might be the first time a game pissed me off, ha.

Shawn Jones

Blaster Master was my Everest. I have yet to reach that summit...

Andrew Tamagni

Been dipping into the NES library having missed it in my youth. Perfect discussion from people who are clearly passionate about the system and games to give me something to go to after I've been through the most popular titles. Great stuff again!

Jeremy Seal

Colin, you should really check out Retrogamer3's Castlevania 2 upgrade. It is really amazing.
