In this episode, we are in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, interviewing the two 'coyotes' who agreed to give us a tour of their human smuggling route across the U.S.-Mexico border.

We discuss many issues, such as drownings in the Rio Grande and the worship of unofficial Catholic saint, Santa Muerte.

More to come.

GOATED in the sauce, US Gov funds militias in Central America to destroy infrastructure projects which attempt to bridge the Damien gap, the myth that no road crosses it as a result of difficult terrain and environmental protections is false, the connection is already half complete on the east coast but has been continuously bombed. I don't understand their reasoning, nor if it's a direct intentional attempt to stop development by US Gov or simply the goal of the militias they fund for other purposes, but the acts of terrorism in the communities not connected via road on the east coast of panama are quite concerning and are only reported in very small obscure local news. Also, there's a man called Munsis Message, from India, who is a coyette for Africans and Asians, he picks them up in Brazil (or near there?) and brings them on the journey to the US border, he hikes with them through the Damien Gap and posts videos about it. He used to have a YT page but now it's all on Facebook. I'm a Canadian, never been to Damien gap, but I spent a long time planning the logistics for road and bridge infrastructure in the area, a theoretical engineering exercise to attempt to find the cheapest and most effective method to bridge the gap, and ended up learning a lot about illegal migration and militias in the area. Talked to a lot of people in the area, towns with road connections to other towns in the area, but inexplicably cutoff from neiboring town groupings. The connections between these town groups are constantly built then blown up.

Awesome series, I think the Santa Muerte bit was a bit of a random detour and I think you mistakenly used some footage of Mayan ruins when speaking of Aztecs, but otherwise pretty good reporting.

Gaius Nietzsche Patton

You really think Santa Muerte and worship of it is “cool”? This nihilistic death-centric belief that has supplied justification to the rampant violence within Mexico and cartel culture? I think you’re straight wrong there bro, shitty ass take. Idk if you’re drinking too much of these coyote’s koolaid but they’re not good people no matter what they told you. They are directly responsible for leading people to their deaths while extorting them for their life savings. Don’t forget these small time independent clowns are only getting these struggling families and the actual cartel organizations are helping an entirely different class of people cross, people that are not giving themselves up to border patrol for the comfy free Uber ride to Chicago or Phoenix. All you’ve focused on are “give ups” when “get aways” represent an entirely different undocumented danger. Yes of course if someone gives themselves up it’s probably because they’re legitimately struggling but it’s been often proven that give ups are used as targeted distractions to take up CBP’s time and resources so the cartels can then send getaways across in a different location on the border. These are the people we know nothing about and for very nefarious reasons do not want to be documented by CBP upon entry.

Worried about something - if you use software to blur the faces in your videos, can that same software be used (if provided to authorities) to unblur those faces? Maybe solid color blocks would be more secure.

Anonymous

Native Spanish speaker here; I think there's a "lost in translation" moment in here when talking about the price for crossing the border. I think what they are saying is that it went from 8K USD to 4K USD, not MXN. There's just a slight moment where one coyote mentions "pesos" and agreed with Andrew that 4K MXN are around 200 USD, but for the rest of the conversation the coyotes keep referring to the price of crossing in USD (4K). This coincides with the common knowledge of crossing the border being between 5K-10K USD.

djdeutschebahn

No ... you can't recreate/ "hallicunate" this kind of information, once it is removed (such as blurred). Facial features are very detailed, information wise.

Sean Andrews

i don't think any mainstream news organization would ever consider crossing the border and interviewing coyotes while crossing the border with them. you guys have huge balls for taking that risk and i respect that.

Anonymous

5:57 he said "hasta san anto" which he means San Antonio

Anonymous

Right - these young coyotes are obviously conflicted, expressing regret about the path they've chosen and not wishing it for their siblings. They're afraid - don't give consistent answers: "do you have a boss?" "Yes we do --" "we're our own bosses". "I believe in God but I worship death" - watch any cartel videos online (I highly recommend you don't) and you'll see why their fear is wholly justified and why they quite obviously live in regret - a true shame that just as the main interviewee was getting personal and opening up about this tension, cow excitement took over... In general, fantastic work from Channel 5 as always - thank you!

BCL

Ruben and Matt are clearly zoomers that don't value human life, or prefer edginess in the face of human tragedy by siding with nihilism. I hear you man. I think this needed both sides of the spectrum insofar as perspective is concerned. Just because Santa Muerte is a reaction to cartel violence and untold suffering doesn't automatically make it "cool" because it's a middle finger to Catholocism. I don't like that take at all. The historical context was neat, but co-signing a literal death cult during the country's most tragic period in its post-colonial history is sort of f*cked.

Kind of agree. That was a weird way to transition from a young man telling Andrew that vice and greed had left him feeling totally alone. Surprising in any case.

Anthony Nittolo

It looked to me like deflecting from a subject that could change the mood. We are watching this and feeling safe, Andrew makes it seem like all is good but I would imagine in that moment he was handling all kinds of emotions and maybe didn't want to take a dive into what the young man was talking about. What if it led to conversations that the young man didn't want to have? They might have decided to stop them from filming. I don't believe he did it to be disrespectful.

PeterSParker

Everyone upset with Andrew cutting homie off when he got deep, just remember these young dudes are out here putting themselves at risk to show Andrew the skinny. Yes we want to know their story, however, if their story tells us who they are in a real way, it could get them killed. These narco communities are big, but a lot more familiar than people realize. Faces, tattoos, stories, your family, and past, too many details could get these people in trouble, and I'm sure Andrew is scared this entire time. You'd be stupid not to be. Just trying to stay safe and get the story out. Don't hate on homie for that. Especially when they talk about not having a boss. That was sketch. Like they were with the cartels but then their "boss" or whatever died. Now they're independent? Idk, sounds weird. Mad respect for them and the Channel 5 team.

Incredible reporting you guys are making history

bccs22

Na man, I think they have a boss. Everyone has a boss. Felt like that whole exchange from 7:30 to 8 is them working out that they can't say that they have a boss. The second guy knew the bosses don't want their existence even acknowledged on a video like this, or any video, and he cut off his buddy real quick with the "We're our own boss" trying to end the discussion. The rest was the first guy trying to talk his way out of mentioning it.

bccs22

Yea I agree. You don't want that situation taking a wrong turn.

bccs22

It does seem crazy that there's not a road connecting the two continents by now. I'll have to look into these bombings. I always assumed part of the reason was there's no real trade between the countries. Most of the goods are going way north of Panama to the US. And part because the US, and maybe the countries in between, don't want the immigration.

bccs22

I liked it. Takes us into the culture and history.

bccs22

The only shitty ass take here is yours, not recognizing "cool" means interesting and you being a blow hard. Based on your backwards logic, these people are forcing thousands of regular people over the border just to hide a few bad ones. Get a grip on reality dude.

SanestFlexican

Babe wake up 🚨 la Santa muerte 🚨 lore mentioned

Owen Degen

@bccs22 Perceived lack of national/international economic incentive would explain the lack of bridge over the Atrato River, which is the only substantial bridge necessary to connect the two continents. However, a ferry could quite affordably fix this issue. Whilst long haul commercial transportation likely wouldn't be able to utilize a small ferry, tourists and the tens of thousands of locals (population #s are hard to find, but I can say with certainty it's above 15K, and my conservative guess is 20K+) who live right above the river, many of whom own cars/motorcycles and use them for travel between their towns disconnected from the rest of the world, would benefit greatly from it. What is not clear is the reasoning behind the destruction of bridges between these towns, by militias, who are sponsored by the US government. On the east coast of the damien gap if you examine the road network, there's a clear line of roads, bridges and towns running north north west, but there's inexplicable gaps. Admittedly it's quite conspiratorial to suggest the US Gov is intending to restrict the bridging of continents, but the situation is quite confusing and suspicious. Is suspect the local militas have their reasons, and they just so happen to be sponsored by the US for other reasons, similar to the whole "CIA sell crack" thing, where the CIA sponsored a group that just so happened to smuggle crack as one of their revenue streams. Idk.

SanestFlexican

Waiting for the Malverde lore DLC, great job Andrew and crew 👏🏽

Gaius Nietzsche Patton

Lmao you’re the one who needs to get a grip on reality and stop coping for the cartels. How much did they pay you to post this comment? 40 pesos? But you’re absolutely right. I should definitely take the word of some “union labor” loser over the numerous county sheriffs in these border jurisdictions that have been observing this exact pattern for the past 3 years. Keep living in blissful denial of the facts and keep jerking off the cartels. I’m sure they appreciate it; they’re very progressive and pro-union bro!

Keep it up 👍 Since your HBO documentary there’s been banger after banger about on-the-streets videos and journalism of real people and their lives, even in a video like the ‘ocean city’ in Jersey it’s so refreshing and informing 👍 can’t wait for what you produce in the future, keep it up

Aldeeenii

Yes, he will. Yes, it is annoying when he says "join my patreon to see the rest of these videos" and they haven't been uploaded yet - but you now have front row first release access. You will see every video before YT, you can help give feedback and input, and you will see some patreon-only vids. Trust me, your $5/month will be worth it - it sure is for me. Almost none of the YT (if any) can be monetized due to "controversial" content. This patreon is the only way the videos get funded. The YT helps educate people. the patreon helps fund the education of people. It will be worth it!
