Today we are going to learn how to play Refugee by Tom Petty. Tom Petty was really good at taking a couple of chords and turning them into a magic song. A lot like CCR and John Fogerty, Tom was proof that if you had a solid idea and good melody you could do a lot with simple ideas. Complicated doesn't' automatically mean good nor simple automatically mean bad. It is a great example of knowing who you are as a musician, knowing what you are good at, working on what you are good at and lastly getting the most out of what you are good at.

Will Improve

  • Simple riffs
  • Connecting chords with scales
  • Vocal phrasing that doesn't start at the 1st beat
  • Groove in general
  • Power chords (If you want to push yourself)

Refugee - Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers - Ukulele Tutorial

New Ukulele Tutorials every Wednesday (Technique) and Saturday (Song) Today we are going to learn how to play Refugee by Tom Petty. At its core the song is just a 3 chord, F#m (the key) A and E. I turned the E into E7 to make the song a little easier, and as F#m is the key where the bVII chord can be turned into a bVII7 diatonically (thin the V chord of A) so it didn't take away from the sound of the song or add a new note, it simply made things easier. In the beginning of the song I included the E5, A5 and another B7 shape. The B7 is just for beginners to make the song easier but the E5 and A5 are the shapes that the band is actually playing in the verse, making it slightly more accurate. 1-1 Lessons - Tenthumbsproductions@gmail.com.
