The first eleven days of the #TenThumbsBluesChallenge was dedicated to giving you a large variety of rhythm tools and the ability to look at the 12 bar and know what goes where and what options you have. The breakdown for Day 11 in the PDF is very comprehensive, make sure you download it.

For the last 4 days we are going to shift gears and start to talk about the other half of the blues, the lead part, soloing, we are learning how to jam.

Day 12, the first day transitioning to the soloing, we are going to look at the next shape in our key of G Blues, the G Blues Scale shape 3. We are also going to talk about ornamentation and we are going to introduce two techniques, the hammer on, and the pull off, these two.

What lick should I use for the challenge?

  • You can either use any of the licks in the PDF that have a hammer on or a pull off
  • Or you can create your own Lick
  • Your own lick must have either a hammer on or pull off
  • It also must resolve on the Root note, meaning the last note is a G note, which for shape three is the 3rd fret of the E string

Will improve

  • Use of the blues scale
  • Transforming the minor pentatonic into a blues scale
  • Resolving licks
  • Hammer on
  • Pull off
  • Triplets

Is the blue note the Db ? Cause in a previous lesson I feel it was the B note. ? Is there two of them ?

Tyler Austenfeld

The Devil's 5th is Db, the blue note is the B. They are both notes that you can work on top of a pentatonic base to give the scale a more bluesy flavor.

Mary Anne Scovel-Pearson

So are we incorporating this lick into the 12 bar blues we have been playing so far? Exactly how may bars of this new lick are we playing? Are we playing your version or our version of a random 12 bars of licks?
