Melody, the heart and soul of every song, but Ukulele players don't spend enough time fine tuning the craft. This Ukulele Music Theory Lesson will walk you through how to practice melody to help you learn to sing a song and then take it a step further and I'll show you how to analyze a melody to make you a more well wounded and complete musician and help you understand music theory in general.

Yes, this is an ukulele melody tutorial, and yes this will show you how to play melody, but it is really designed to show you how to practice melody on your ukulele. To master melody you need to be able to read sheet music (or have a refined year to the point where you can hear a melody and sing it) so here is a link to our series on how to read sheet music. The melody that we are using as an example for the this lesson is the first phrase to Somewhere Over the Rainbow, if you want to play Somewhere Over the Rainbow check out our strummer and chord melody tutorial.

Lesson 3 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjQiv...

Lesson 4 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HLNn...

In this lesson I am going to basically skip over the process of turning sheet music into melody, that is what the series is for, but that is also the first step. Once you have a melody tabbed out you can improve singing the song by playing and humming the melody at the same time and then playing and singing the melody at the same time. This will improve your break down of the song. Take it a step further and turn the melody into intervals and examine the relationship that those intervals have with the underlying harmony to have a better understanding of music theory in general. You can also use a looper to play the melody over the chords and lastly with that break down you can use the information to write your own melody on the ukulele, so this is also a how to compose melody on the ukulele tutorial, too! See how important melody is? And to think, you haven't beeb practicing it!
