This was the last of three stories written by Chris Boucher, after The Face of Evil and The Robots of Death. He moved on to Blake's 7 on a recommendation by Robert Holmes, where he was the script editor throughout its entire run and wrote numerous episodes himself. It's also Louise Jameson's favorite of her stories, as she'd always gotten along with Boucher the best of all the writers. Though Boucher himself was rather harder on it, saying the story simply couldn't handle being spread across four episodes and he had to resort to some very obvious padding.

I'd say this is the weakest of his three stories, but I think it say a lot that a story this good is his weakest.
