Yay! Been checking for this every ten mins for the last 2 hrs. Sorry to hear you had a bit of an emergency making it and TLOU a bit delayed. It's no problem!

This show got a bit of undeserved flack early on from people under the impression that it was saying these guys would ultimately start the entire rebellion. The show runners actually had to make a public statement that they were just a very small part of it, likening them to one of the people in a remote defense outpost during the American Revolution.

So here we are finally Jess, you have now been blessed enough to meet the greatest legend in all Star Wars! No its not Luke, Obi-Wan, Vader or Yoda, but....... Chopper!!!!!!!!! :D Excited to see you start my favourite Star Wars show! Jumping to Rebels immediately after the emotion and tone of the later seasons of Clone Wars, is a bit jarring, especially since its lighter in tone, a lot of fun and much more for the younger age group to enjoy too - to start with! However at times is truly top tier Star Wars. I said enjoy it like you do Mando, its full of heart and goofiness before it settles down into something great. The reasons I love it are primarily because it feels like old school original trilogy Star Wars, like the capers Luke, Leia, Chewie, Han and the droids, get up to on the Death Star in A New Hope, and on Jabba's sail barge in Return Of The Jedi. The Ghost crew here get up to all sorts of mischief, getting under the Empire's skin, and the execution of it is done in a fun way, that at times will also be emotional. Another reason I love it, is because its a lot more cohesive throughout the series. Sure there are some slight 'filler' episodes, but everything is done for a reason, there is no fat at all in Rebels. It doesn't have quite the highest highs Clone Wars gets to, but it has some truly memorable moments of its own to stand out with. This was the first Star Wars IP done under Disney when they took over the franchise, and they cancelled Clone Wars after season 5, and some fans didn't give this show much of a chance at the time it was first aired, because Disney replaced Clone Wars with this, cut costs, and shifted the tone to a lighter feel. Each episode cost less than half of what went into a Clone Wars episode, so they had to redesign the way they animated things. And they went with a different art style, relying heavily on Star Wars original concept artist Ralph McQuarrie's original designs. Chopper and Zeb for instance are based off the original designs for R2-D2 and Chewbacca accordingly (which is kind of nodded to by Zeb with the wookier stuff!); the cockpit of The Ghost is what the original ship cockpit that then got remade into the Millenium Falcon was going to be; so keep that in mind throughout the show. Most things work, some don't, but I applaud their bravery in going with this artstyle. Lightsabres too far more reflect McQuarrie's rapier-like design, than the beefier ones we ended up with. Anyway I'm blabbering on, the first season is set 5 years before A New Hope - in the same year as Andor btw for reference, and each season gets closer and closer to that timeline. Have fun with it Jess, I'm sure once you get into it, you'll begin to love it.

It´s Rebels-Time! Hell yeah! And I was soooo happy that you like the Crew! Chopper is an icon from the beginning! :D But I didn´t realize how well Rebels fits after the Kenobi Series... I mean, Vader, the Inquisitor and Kenobi make an appearance in the first two Episodes...

There are some reasons why the majority of us asked you to watch Rebels first over Bad Batch, despite the latter being closer to Clone Wars chronologically, whilst this is bang-on Andor's timeline. There are things and concepts in this show that are featuring in other Star Wars content you've seen and will see. Bad Batch has connections here to this, and also the concept of Inquisitors were introduced in this show, that you have now seen in Kenobi, including the Grand Inquisitor (and one reason why he couldn't be killed in that show when he is shown later here). Rebels will be more important for the live stuff, especially Mando and Ahsoka, hence its good to catch up on this now.

This is most certainly going to be your type of show, Jess. I know how you love found family type stories. This one is especially good, and I definitely would like to continue to revisit and share it with you. Timeline-wise, this is fourteen years following Revenge of the Sith, approximately four years following the Obi-Wan show, and it transpires at or around the same time as the first season of Andor. I got super excited by the first scene, yelling, “HOLY SHIT!! DARTH VADER!!” particularly because it was James Earl Jones himself providing the voice. Sure, there’s a touch of age to it as James was around his early-mid eighties when this premiered, even so, it’s just so lovely to hear James as the beloved Sith Lord. Very much a lighthearted series opener. I love how a lot of the first bit of it feels very Aladdin meets The Last Crusade. The question of who your favorite character of the main group will be is something I’m most curious about myself. I could make a case for any of them being who I would think would be your favorite. If I had to put money down, I would think Sabine would be up there pretty high if not top of the list. They are all great. My cousin on my mom’s side, who is the closest thing I have to a sister; her favorite of both the show and Star Wars altogether is Hera. Personally, of the group, my favorite is Zeb. A big part of that is loving Steve Blum in the role. Steve’s a cool dude. In any event, I loved how you got so invested in all of them. Seeing you invest in the crew of the Ghost as quickly as you did, Jess, made me smile, and quote the Emperor by saying, “Everything is proceeding as I have foreseen.” I loved how protective you were of the Wookies; that was so very sweet. I KNEW you’d have a strong reaction over Obi-Wan's appearance. No worry about my ears as they were fine. As I say, I very much would love to continue to share your journey through this show, and it is my sincere hope that you have enough views so that you continue to react to it. However, if this does not come to pass, if there aren’t enough views for that, then I still strongly encourage you to see the rest of the show for yourself. Whichever way it plays out, I am if nothing else SO happy to see that from the first two episodes alone, you really like Rebels. Thank you for this reaction to the premiere of Rebels, it was so great, Jess.

Very much an original trilogy feel to this show, yes. And there’s a more intimate feel to this than there is with The Clone Wars. With Clone Wars it’s very much a Shakespearean tragedy, thus it had to cover lots of ground. Rebels has the focus primarily on the group, thus like you say feels more cohesive. I can tell just from your comments just how excited you are, and it’s making me smile.

I first binged this show during the first COVID lockdown and I think it kept me sane. So I am very excited you are reacting to this as I just know how much you're going to like it!

Yes, TCW has to cover the whole war and it did so spectacularly. The Rebel Alliance here hasn't yet started, so this is one crew's journey to try to make a difference, and does have a more intimate feel, in the main. It sometimes isn't the most subtle in its story-telling, but Filoni always said all kids should have their own Star Wars, and this was it for some, who can learn life-lessons on the way. There is just something warming about the show that we can relate to, that we get with the best Star Wars, especially the original trilogy, which this echoes as much as it can. And its not just that, it has a very good story with the characters in and among themselves, as well as the bigger picture. For the budget they were given for the show, Filoni and co worked wonders. :)

Yeah the characters are all pretty great. We can make a case for most of them becoming a fave of Jess, and they almost all have become iconic in the fanbase now despite this show's rocky beginnings with said fanbase. I personally love all of them and my love for this show is such that I won't pick a fave because they are all dear to my heart. As we spoke about the other week, James Earl Jones I think sounds fine here, but in Rogue One which was just released about a year after season 1/2 of this, he did sound notably older. It matters not though, as hearing J.E.J Vader in a show like this, which some in the fanbase still roll their eyes at, as for some reason they don't take the animations seriously, is great.

Seeing who Jess picks as her favorite of the main group of characters is definitely part of the reactions to Rebels that I'm looking forward to. I thought about it some while rewatching the first two episodes, and said to myself, “Well, that, that could be any of them! Any of them could be Jess’s favorite!” They are all great.
