I recommend watching the shorts that precede the show. They're only a couple minutes apiece and they give good background on the characters.

They are not really necessary. One of them gets kind of mentioned later for Sabine's short, but its no biggie and doesn't affect the main story.

Zeb is based on the original concept art for Chewbacca, which makes his being passed off as a "hairless Wookie" a pretty fun in-joke.

Love Rebels so much. Its such a beautiful love letter to the original trilogy in heart and feel. And Kanan is soooo cool! :D

Your Star Wars journey has been rather dark lately. The Clone Wars finale, Tales of the Jedi and Obi-Wan Kenobi all went to some pretty grim places. Your Star Wars is about to become fun again. And I apologize if I were one of the people who said more than they should about future episodes. I believe the most spoilery thing I said was that you really should watch this show before another show that's upcoming for various reasons. And you really should. ;) But, perhaps I said more than I should.

Oh! And the Grand Inquisitor at the top of the episode is the same Grand Inquisitor that you met in Obi-Wan Kenobi. For you, it was a shock when he turned up alive in the fifth episode. The rest of us were expecting it.

It only really makes sense to watch them before you start the show to introduce you to the characters, but the opener also does a good job of that. I watched them before I started the show thankfully and I would recommend people do that if they want a full experience but it isn't necessary. Maybe the only important one is the Ezra one as it hints to the force-sensitivity, his collection of helmets and the TIE fighter pilot returning later on.
