Everyone figured there had to be some kind of flashback coming, because even as good as he is at it, why would they go to the trouble of bringing Hayden back just to have him stomp around in the suit? And it really says something about how popular he's become in the years since all the mockery he got in the prequels that, while there were of course a few jokes about how inappropriately old he looks with seemingly no attempt at digital de-aging, for the most part everyone was just super happy to see him as Anakin again. And of course, it also helps that he's finally getting to play the role without being saddled with George Lucas', I'll be diplomatic and say idiosyncratic dialogue style. Unfortunately, this episode also comes along with the reveal about the truth of Third Sister, which could have been really great if they hadn't totally botched the execution of it. Most obviously, the reveal comes far too late in the story with only one episode left to do anything with it, which I'm guessing is a consequence of this story originally being intended as a movie before they had to stretch it into six episodes. Plus, we've already seen her doing so much clearly evil stuff (I'm sure that woman who got her hand cut off feels so much better that it was in the cause of killing Vader) that it's impossible to now see her as actually being one of the good guys, which it feels from just the tone of the scene is what they're going for. And it's a shame, because this idea of a formerly good person warped into the very thing they hate could have been a really neat thing to explore, maybe even on a deeper level than Vader ever got, and Moses Ingram absolutely has the acting skills to pull that off, but it's just not something these writers are interested in, apparently.

This is my favorite episode of Kenobi. The flashbacks, the motivation of Reva gets revealed, the fight between the "rebels" and the empire and how fucking easily Vader beats Revas ass! I´m still hoping we´ll get Rebels and Bad Batch reactions after Kenobi... This is so much fun and I don´t want the "Star Wars Tuesdays" to end so soon... ^^ Your reaction are just so amazing! And you´ll love the characters (even Wrecker isn´t that bad in BB! xD)

Once again, I'll likely have to split my comments up as there’s plenty to say with this episode. I'll start by saying that yeah, say this show had been eight episodes long, it would have improved certain aspects of the show. It was great to see Kumail as Haja again. Addressing your comment about Leia in the vents, don't think I recall much in the way of complaints about Leia in the vents. I will say that I like that you liked how realistic it was that she didn’t instantly resolve the issue. I loved it when you again expressed love for Bail Organa, and when you called him an iconic compassionate king. Which he is. Yeah, Tala was a standout character for this show. I got invested in her fairly quickly. I'm still laughing how this contrasts my feelings of Indira Varma’s character in Game of Thrones, whom I HATED. I loved her scene with Obi-Wan where she amends her original statement about forgetting the past. Indira gave a great performance in that scene. Tala’s death got me super emotional, especially when NED shields her body. It got me in the heart seeing your reaction to that. I admit, however, being so impressed in Tala pulling out the thermal detonator, and basically saying, “If I'm dying, I'm taking you motherfuckers with me.” Now, to talk about the Third Sister and her backstory. First, I’m pleased that it was not spoiled for you. As I previously stated, I figured it out early on. I even got yelled at by some fans for not saying I figured it out. And when I was asked why I didn’t even mention the idea at least, I simply said, “Well... I thought it was obvious.” I had the similar thing as you have of trying not to actively figure things out. Yet, in this instance, the Third Sister’s backstory pieced itself together upon my learning that the Third Sister knew that Anakin was Darth Vader, because that was the only logical explanation. When I talked to my brother about it, he said he had a similar thought, and we both agreed that Obi-Wan succinctly spelled out the thought process as “The Third Sister knows Vader is Anakin. Vader’s hardly likely to tell her this, and she’s too young to have known him way back when, unless...” A chilling moment seeing the flashback of Anakin killing the younglings. And this is a Disney show, too. I think you hit it right on the head with the Third Sister in that she’s a character who has a massively sympathetic backstory who let herself be consumed by darkness and revenge that she’s become quite the villain herself with her actions like when she prepared to torture Leia. It's like a line from the book, Red Dragon, “As a child, my heart goes out to him. As an adult, he's irredeemable.” With the Third Sister, I think she’s meant to be kind of a middle ground of that line. How well that comes across has been a matter of debate since this show aired. I myself have been upfront of not having been the biggest fan of the character, that said, I have loved your getting into the character, and through your reactions, I find my stance softening somewhat on the Third Sister. Then there’s the flashbacks of Anakin and Obi-Wan. You're far from the only one being emotional seeing those scenes. I sobbed some myself. My brother, likewise, said he also sobbed seeing Ewan and Hayden in those scenes. As I see Ryan has pointed out, it got mild criticism in the de-aging. One, seeing Hayden now, he looks like he’s my age, and I'm a decade younger than he is. In any case, it becomes an irrelevant concern, because it was just so beautiful seeing the two men sharing the screen in the capacity that they did. All your comments on that aspect of the episode got me to cry, and say, “That’s it, Jess. You said it all.” Answering your question on Vader’s power level, your reaction to that scene with the ship being super fantastic by the way. I also loved you saying, “Not today, my Lord!” and when you pointed out the clever play on words, I laughed a little and said, “No, yeah, I saw you sort of twisted a little there with the wordplay.” In terms of power, the Emperor is the most powerful surviving force user at this point. If not, he and Yoda are roughly tied, Obi-Wan is below them. Darth Vader would be below Obi-Wan in terms of power. Had it not been for what happened on Mustafar, Vader would surpass everyone in terms of raw power. The suit hobbles him some, yet, as you see, his power is most impressive to behold. It is some of the most impressive showcasing of Vader’s power in terms of appearances in live-action.

Now, to talk about my favorite scene of the episode, and my second favorite scene of the series, the scene of the Third Sister trying to achieve her revenge, and Darth Vader completely and utterly demolishing the effort. You're far from the only one pointing out that it wasn’t the best moment for the Third Sister to try to take out Vader. The consensus view of the fandom is that we agree that one’s tactics would have to be downright Archimedean when going up against a Sith Lord of Darth Vader’s caliber, but it would be better suited to pick a different strategy other than walk up behind him, turn on the lightsaber, and yell “RRAAAGH!!!” I do like that outmatched though she was, the Third Sister did not roll over. Watching this show again with you, I'm even saying, “To her credit, she didn’t go down without a fight, I'll give her points for that.” I know how you say you feel bad for her, and that is probably something I was supposed to feel. Honestly though, I was too distracted by LOVING how ludicrously awesome Vader was in that scene. What particularly makes it stand out was that he never once drew his own lightsaber against the Third Sister. The height of disrespect is when he did the grabby-grab, split her blade in half, tossed her the one half, all but saying, “Go ahead, pick it up.” I was screaming and hollering in pure glee seeing this scene for the first time, it was SO BEAUTIFUL. I also loved the music throughout the scene. I got full body chills when Vader revealed that he knew what the Third Sister’s plan was all along, more specifically, it sent a cold shiver running down my spine hearing James Earl Jones say the word youngling. Another great moment when Vader then allows the Grand Inquisitor to get his turn in. I loved the smug satisfaction Rupert Friend injected into his lines, especially that great line, “Revenge does WONDERS for the will to live. Don't you think?” which hearing that line, I said, “That one I'm going to have to write down!” I am most pleased that the Grand Inquisitor still being alive was not spoiled for you. I confess that I had a little bit of fun at that moment seeing it for the first time. We see that the Grand Inquisitor still lives, I put a shocked expression on my face, let out a big dramatic gasp, then I shifted my expression to a look of being unsurprised as I quipped, “Yeah, I knew he wasn’t dead.” So, as of the end of the penultimate episode, we have the Empire in pursuit of the Path, and now poor Luke is in danger. A great place to leave it going into the final episode. Your reaction to it, I am most heavily anticipating. Thank you for another fantastic reaction to Obi-Wan, Jess, and I cannot wait for next week.

I guessed the backstory because it felt like the only reason that opening scene of the attack on the Jedi Temple would exist.

It's quite reminiscent of Peter's fight with the White Witch in the first Narnia movie, though that one also has the advantage of our being able to see Tilda Swinton's face and all of her contempt and toying with him.

That’s a good comparison. I'd say that Hayden did a good job of conveying, as you say, contempt and toying with the Third Sister. It looks like Vader’s insulted by how easy it is, considering how long the Third Sister has wanted revenge. It would be something to actually see Vader’s expression throughout the fight.

I have never been shy to show my disregard for Hayden's Anakin in the films; but I have to say, seeing him at the start of this episode, and back in this series, just felt right; and I'm not ashamed to say, I shed a nostalgic tear or two about it. While Matt Lanter's Clone Wars Anakin will always be the definitive Anakin for me, it was good seeing Hayden back. While we don't see Anakin much in this series, Hayden does a superb job playing Vader. You can see he's not as skinny as he was in the prequels (and in fact ordinarily is still skinny), as he bulked up to get in the Vader suit. At times he looks like a 40 year old padawan, but he still has his babyface, so gets away without the deageing. Ewan has a few more wrinkles and is past 50 now, so won't get away with portraying an early 30-something Obi-Wan without a little help now! :D I love that this episode is written like a dance between the two, to see who can outwit the other. The two actors haven't lost their touch much since 2005 and Revenge Of The Sith and fight very well still. Good old Star Wars, Lola has red lights on now to indicate she's a baddie! :D Going back to the duel scenes, they do deliver well on them. We see how Anakin was a very athletic fighter who used unorthodox moves in his form IV technique. Then when he becomes Vader, he's more precise with his strikes, and delivers even more powerful blows to overwhelm his opponents, as he had to adapt his form due to his injuries, cybernetics and the restriction of the suit. He also uses his advantage over everyone (aside from Sidious) in the force when need be. Reva is very mixed up. She wants revenge for what happened that night in the Temple, but revenge is not the Jedi way, and she is corrupted now by the Inquisitorius. To me this echoes the likes of Darth Maul, who felt abandoned by Sidious and sought his own destiny, but rather than try to become something else, only knew the darkside. Of course Obi-Wan doesn't want Anakin destroyed, he would like to bring him back if he could and thats the difference; even in Obi-Wan's darkest hours here, he is still on the path of the light and tries to do the right thing, and is acting on his line to Maul in TCW : "It takes strength to resist the darkside, only the weak embrace it". In Reva's case, she isn't weak, but misguided as she has grown up from being a child with all this. That scene with Vader and the freighter is ridiculous, and I love it!!! We've seen Ahsoka try with a small ship to bring it back with all her might, and fail, but if anyone can bring down a freighter with one hand, it would be the Chosen One! Obi outsmarts him once more though, like he does in their duel to show he's still the master. Vader toying with Reva, yeah, it was a half-decent plan on her part but she underestimated him, and yes he is at his peak in this show, as later the effects of the suit imo start to take their toll, hence one of the reasons Sidious wanted Luke to be his apprentice in the original trilogy, as he has all the potential of Anakin without the baggage. The Grand Inquisitor (who had to survive as we know he is in later stuff) returning with his legendary "Hellooooo" always has me in stitches. I'm not fond of people getting stabbed by lightsabres through the gut and surviving like Reva and the GI here, but Lucas started all this when Maul 'somehow returned' after being cut in half.

Yeah Wrecker calms down a wee bit in BB, but he's still something!

"I thought it was obvious" - you reminded me of Tech with that line Thomas! But yes I figured it out straight away from the first time we saw Reva she was one of the kids in the opening scene at the temple, especially since we know that most Inquisitors are ex-Jedi.

Never been interested in the Narnia stuff, they passed me by, but if Tilda Swinton is in it and kicking ass, I may give them a shot.

Anonymous

Not sure if I meant to deliberately channel Tech, but that’s what it felt like.

Honestly, Tilda Swinton alone makes the Narnia movies worth it. She is devilishly wonderful as the White Witch.

I never held any ill will towards Hayden as I always thought he was good. As I've gotten older, I find my criticisms are towards the writing that he got saddled with. So emotional seeing him and Ewan sharing those scenes. I love how they still got it with the fight choreography. The Third Sister feels like pure fear led her down the path she took. I’d say she’s a perfect representation of Yoda’s famous line, “Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate... leads to suffering.” Made worse that she presumably had no real support system thus is left to wallow in that and let her desire for revenge fester and corrupt her. Vader and the freighter was fantastic. Seeing Darth Vader in action like he is in his duel with the Third Sister was something I had been wanting to see since I was a little kid, and it was beautiful. Like I say, ludicrously out matched though the Third Sister was, she still fought, thus one thought was, “Then you will die braver than most.” The Grand Inquisitor moment was indeed priceless. As I mentioned in my comment I had fun with it. It was also at the scene that made me say, “You know what? Rupert Friend was great as the Grand Inquisitor. Yeah, I would have much preferred Jason Issacs in the role, even so, Rupert did a great job.” My brother’s less familiar with the Grand Inquisitor and he’s of a similar sentiment. In his case it’s more being a fan of Jason Issacs as my brother and I are both big fans of Jason’s work.

Ok guys you have twisted my arm, will look them out sometime soon.

Yes I think I have seen that too with Hayden even when I first saw the prequels, and used his rather dry and characterless acting in the first two films as a way for me to cope with how poor these films are imo. In Revenge Of The Sith he loosens up more and has some good scenes in that film, but the damage was done. It wasn't just him in the prequels that fell flat acting wise, Natalie Portman too was very dry, and that lass can certainly act! George's uninspired direction throughout being reflected by two of his lead actors performances. Ewan and Ian McDiarmid were the only two really to come out of those films well. I'm more willing to forgive certain things these days, and glad to say I've come around to Hayden playing the characters now, and good for him, after the hell some of the fanbase would have put him through for it. He's great in the finale too, and I hope we see him back in some form for the Ahsoka series too. They were filming both series around the same time, so surely kept him around for some scenes there too. This would also add weight to Ahsoka's character, for those who don't know her from the animations. Yeah Reva is in her own world of pain, outside of being stabbed in the gut from a lightsabre! I don't get why she goes after Luke yet though, as I've never really thought about it, and I'm sure we'll be discussing it when Jess uploads the finale; and tbh I wasn't bothered about it on first viewing as my only concern was how they were going to resolve Obi-Wan's arc in the show. Will dwell more on it when I rewatch it this week though. Vader toying with Reva is great, though I'd already got my fix from him from his Rogue One corridor scene, which is just utterly horrifying for the poor sods trapped in there with him. This is different though, as Reva is a trained force-user and the scene was executed very well to show the vast gulf in ability and power. Vader shows this off elsewhere too, where the "die braver than most" line comes from, but we'll get to that another time! I'm fine with Rupert Friend's performance too as the GI. Sure Jason would have been great to play him, but I believe his schedule was full when they were planning the series, so had to recast. Would like to see Jason back in live action as someone else though one day; but again, thats for later. Most people's issues with Friend came from his look, which is rather silly when they were comparing him to a look elsewhere in Star Wars, that is often derided for how it looks aesthetically! Its the same doughnuts moaning about Ahsoka's lekku for example.

When the prequels came out when I was a kid, I was aware of the backlash towards Hayden, and I didn’t have a problem with him or even the dialogue for that matter. Looking back on it now that I'm in my thirties, I'll freely admit how clunky the dialogue is, and even then, I'll stick up for Hayden and Natalie Portman, who yes, certainly can act, in that I hold the opinion that they did the best they could, given the writing they were saddled with. I will say that Hayden gives the stronger performance in Revenge of the Sith as you can tell he’s got a better handle on the character, that and it felt like Lucas listened to some of the backlash and adjustments were made with the writing. It's so great to see how the fandom’s come around with Hayden. I’ve heard differing opinions as to why the Third Sister goes after Luke. I'm also curious to hear what Jess will say about that. Right, though we’ve had the hallway scene in Rogue One, the fight here is between a fellow Force-user, and it shows that, diminished though Vader’s abilities may be, he is an absolute monster in combat, and it just hammers home how the Third Sister isn’t anywhere near his level. Scheduling conflicts would explain why no Jason Issacs as the Grand Inquisitor in this show since, as I recall, he stated he would be most agreeable to playing the character in live-action. Again, Rupert Friend was good in the role. Yeah, I remember the fans complaining about his look which I thought was stupid people got that upset over it. Same with Ahsoka’s look in live-action, which I give that a pass for practicality purposes.

I'm a fair bit older than yourself, and remember when he debuted in AOTC. We heard of this young exciting kid who was going to blow us all away, as if he was a new Marlon Brando, and THAT is what we got. The more I heard about how things were handled by Lucas on set for the prequels though over the years, the more I'm now willing to forgive the acting. And I'm glad to say that Hayden completely won me over in this series, and I'm pleased for him and those in the fanbase who stood by him all these years. I hope he can come back anytime he wants to, to play Vader or force ghost Anakin, if need be. Vader still being able to use the force and fight like this, is testament to his will (which the same cannot be said for Anakin!), to show that overwhelming force power, when he has no limbs left, and that diminished in the force he is, in comparison to what he should be at this time, he is still nigh on unstoppable. I may speak about his abilities with a lightsabre after the finale though - or perhaps leave that also for later, I'll see - as I have opinions on all that, that plenty don't agree with me about! :D And yes, Ahsoka's headdress would be to unwieldy for her style in live action, so have no issue with them making her lekku smaller. In my headcanon I can say its like hair for her, that she can trim if she wants to. I really like Ahsoka's live look as well tbf, as it suits Rosario Dawson's diminutive frame too.
