I love how much this show just trusts us to put the pieces together on our own, with Ellie having lied that she was alone when she was bitten in the mall, and then saying that kid in Kansas City wasn’t the first time she killed someone. So many other shows I could name would just explicitly spell out what happened next, but not this one.

Considering how bad you say your congestion has been as of late, I do hope the final two episodes go easy on the making you cry, though knowing this show, I'm not too optimistic. Still, I hope any crying in the final two episodes of the season will not be too bad for your congestion, Jess. Concerning this episode, I’m going to start by potentially risking getting myself killed in saying that this episode was my least favorite thus far. Now, I haven’t looked into what the consensus view of the episode was, so I don’t know how much praise it received, a lot or a little. If this is in fact a beloved episode, and it’s just me who was not particularly taken with it, then fine, ok, I'm an asshole. Wouldn't be the first time it’s happened. In fairness, I didn’t have the best night last night, which likely hampered my enjoyment of the episode. Maybe. Who knows? I don’t know. To briefly discuss Joel, I think he was telling Ellie to go to Tommy and leave him to die. Half so she could save herself, half so she wouldn’t have to see him die. Lovely that she stays with him. I had a near identical reaction to what you did with the needle at the end. I went, “Hrghh! Stop showing that please. I don’t need to see that.” I’m happy to see you get more context that you were wanting to see with Ellie. I ‘m also happy that you liked the glimmers of happiness, or however it was exactly that you phrased it. It was an interesting dynamic between Ellie and Riley. I like the fact that you found it cute; that it warmed your heart. Midway through, I found myself saying, “Wow. So, Ellie’s schtick isn’t solely for Joel’s benefit. She really is just a smartass kid who doesn’t know when to shut the fuck up for more than ten seconds at a time. Good to know.” I found the whole mall sequence gave me anxiety out the ass. I sounded like a dad when they were on the escalator, saying, “Stay in the center. Avoid the sides, or else your pants get caught and a bloodbath ensues, which is why you fear and respect that escalator.” When they had the booze, I was saying, “Go easy, children, that stuff’ll take the paint off your stomach.” I got distracted by the arcade section trying to look at all the machines, seeing what the selection was. I also kept trying to figure out the puns and groaned in pain at each of them. The screenshot one especially was awful. The masked dance between Ellie and Riley was, as you said, wonderfully weird, I agree. As I'm writing this, I realize part of my lackluster response to this episode is that I knew about Riley, her relationship with Ellie, and her probable fate because the internet was loud beyond belief about it thus the surprise factor of this episode was gone, which likely fueled my melancholic disposition in watching this episode. It made me look forward to your reaction where hopefully you weren’t spoiled, and I'm glad to see you weren’t. During the clicker scene, I quoted Thanos saying, “You should have gone for the head.” thus, when Ellie finally does so, I said, “There ya go.” Your reaction to the revelation that Ellie and Riley got bit, and subsequently their last scenes together, one, that was the standout moment of the reaction. Two, I found I got more emotional seeing your reaction to the scene than I did watching the scene itself. Make of that what you will. I find I don’t have much to say or add to your post-episode thoughts. I will say I share your liking the examination of FEDRA versus the fireflies, and that the show’s not dealing in absolutes about them. I also second your liking the one guy at the school who had the talk with Ellie. I liked hearing everything you had to say. So, all in all, an occasion where I much enjoyed your reaction far more than the episode itself. I wish I liked the episode more than I did. Sorry. As to what’s to come, I don’t know beyond one thing this season, and I’m not going to say what until we get to it, which I actually am looking forward to. Thanks for the great reaction, Jess.

the game is pretty much identical to this episode for the DLC also called Left Behind, only differences is Ellie rummage through a different abandoned mall for supplies to help Joel instead and there are multiple Clickers for game play reasons

The journey on this show reminds of another scifi show called "The Odyssey" from 1992-1994. Theres a world of ruin where the main charater is searching to find something they lost. Joel in the last of us is searching for what he once was throuh the eyes of his new companion. Jay in the odyssey is searching for his father that lost when he was very little in world of ruin created when ends up in a coma. So you have real world and the upsidedown of sorts where actors play dual roles in both worlds. So is the nightmare world that Joel is living in hoping he can wake up in world where his daughter is alive and remembered to bring home a cake to celebrate a birthday one simple life.

This is such a bittersweet episode. Seeing Ellie and her best friend have the best night of their lives, with things we take for granted, then seeing the hints of first love shine through especially on Ellie's side, was indeed so sweet, and beautifully handled. The chemistry between the actresses made their interactions just lovely, as they are trying to handle all the emotions going through them, and what their futures will be; only for their world to turn upside down as they get bitten... We don't see what happens, but we can assume that Ellie in the end, shoots her friend before she becomes too far gone. Joel at death's door says the appropriate thing, for Ellie to let him die and head to Tommy; but after all thats happened now, she will not lose him too.
