Definitely one of the best ship-only episodes of the series. It is as you say very deliberately paced, and in a good way. Loved the character of Dr. Daystrom. I thought William Marshall gave a most thoroughly excellent performance, especially in the scene where he communicates with the M-5. Like you observed it was quite nice that Daystrom was a far more nuanced character than one would generally expect from the type of character that usually is featured in these types of tropes. It is as you noted a consistent trope in sci-fi of the computer going rogue and/or not being as perfect as it’s programmed to be, and here it was done very well. You mentioned the question of how prevalent said trope was at that time. Not entirely sure. I know that the HAL9000 is perhaps the most famous example of the trope, and this episode actually predates 2001 A Space Odyssey by about a month if I have my information correctly. You joked about Kirk and the spotlight, and I did so as well, though I was a tiny bit mean about it. When Kirk questioned is he that jealous and petty, I quipped, “Well, to hear George Takei describe it and considering how Nichelle Nichols used to say tha- Oh, wait, we’re talking about Kirk, the character. Well... No, actually, yeah, that would be applicable to Kirk as well, in all honesty.” I too enjoyed the as you called them “Bestie moments” that Spock and Bones had with Kirk, the one Spock had was particularly heartwarming. I had a laugh over the Commodore jumping to the conclusion that Kirk was to blame as well. I said something similar to what you said, by saying, “You’re the one who set this whole thing up with the business of the computer having control of the Enterprise! How the hell do you just automatically assume the cheese has slid off Kirk’s Cracker and that he’s at fault?!” Another small highlight of your reaction to this episode was your being delighted over how Sulu was part of the twenty essential crewmembers. This was a particularly fun and most enjoyable reaction, Jess, thanks.

Hmm, during Sesska's break I may get around to watching these again. Love me some old school classic Star Trek. Anyone know if Sesska will do TNG after, or has she seen it maybe?

I know Jess has said she’s seen Next Gen. I believe she has mentioned the idea of revisiting Next Gen, though nothing has been set in stone, at least not that I recall. I also believe that she said that she is planning to watch at least the original series films, though again I may be mistaken in my recollection.

Ah great, the films in the main are pretty good and a lot of fun. TNG would be great too, since imo its the best of the Star Trek series, even if the early seasons can be a tad rough. Will keep an eye out and see what happens.
