This is just a classic planetscape and this episode was featured in TV Sci-Fi Monthly Poster Magazine . On the cover was a still of the Doctor and Sarah crouching behind one of the fantastic jungle plants within the eerie blue lit jungle and the still was also the interior poster of the month. That set had to have set them back a fortune. Of course, there are ehoes of The Forbidden Planet's Id monster. Another freeze frame ending, akin to the previous seasons 'Genesis of the Daleks' with poor Sarah falling. Hoping you are beginning to feel better, Jess. This damn thing just hangs on. Keep your strength up and bless you Jess. You're winning!

Yes! I was thinking the monster was inspired by Forbidden Planet. The first time I saw this episode back in the 70s I hadn't seen Forbidden Planet yet, but now that I've seen the movie, that was my first thought.

Thanks for another great reaction. I never found this to be the most engaging story but very notable for just how weird it is. It is as mentioned, a little akin to the Forbidden Planet and at this stage in Classic Who, they have ventured into giving a nod to classic sci/fi horror Themes. Just as Robot was a bit of a nod to King Kong, this was like the Forbidden Planet. Having said that I think there is a story a little further down the line which is much more like the Forbidden Planet, but I'll mention that when we see it. I love the theme of the planet and just how eerie they made it look & yes, there's always one M***er F***er and that commander is very much the one in this story! See you next time & hoping you're feeling better!

And, of course, the M***er F***er in question is played by Prentis Hancock. Blink and you'll miss him in 'Spearhead From Space' where he is a reporter at the hospital, but by this time, 1976, he's been one of the Moonbase Alpha team in Space 1999 - Series One only - as Main Mission Controller and second in command Paul Morrow.

Ian Smith

Michael Wisher - exercising his apparent "I have to be cast in every other Doctor Who story, somewhere" contract clause.
