I know many think this is a pointless rehash of the cartoon, but as a huge fan of the animated movie, Belle, and Emma Watson, this movie is everything my 14 year old wished for. I remember Watson being fan-cast for so long that it was surreal when they actually cast her. I understand the criticisms and would also have preferred some additional story beats, but that doesn't detract from the movie to me.

This is where the live action movies really started to lose me. Unlike Cinderella or The Jungle Book, this one barely tries to pretend there’s any point to its existence as it mostly is just the same movie, and the few things it does change are for the worse. Like, I still have absolutely no idea why it’s supposed to be a huge shocking twist that Belle’s mother died of a plague, and the magic book just introduces a huge plot hole in why no one uses it during the climax (there actually was a deleted scene explaining why they weren’t using it, but if you take something out of the movie that’s necessary to understand it, guess whose fault it is when people don’t understand it?).

Agreed, it felt like the most pointless remake yet. As you say, almost scene for scene in some areas.

One other big issue is that Disney was clearly trying to tap into how feminist heroes had become such a big talking point again, but their way of doing it was to have the whole town be horrible sexists who even scoff at the idea of women being able to read, which makes it impossible to care about any of them and isn't even accurate to the period.

That’s a nice yellow color on the shirt you wore, and I like how it matches the yellow in Belle’s dress. I would agree that Belle’s dress is a darker shade of blue than the blue in your necklace, but I still think it’s a nice gesture, and really, it’s the thought that counts. Also, the blue from the mug matches so it balances out. So, unlike the last two films, I had seen this one prior to these films winning on the poll. The original animated Beauty and the Beast is in my top five Disney animated films. I was born the year the original animated film was released, and I remember well how everyone was obsessed with this growing up. I therefore understand what you mean by being exhausted by it, particularly if you didn’t actively go out of your way to rewatch it many times like I did when I was a kid. The music and songs by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman are of course superb. My favorites are The Mob Song and Gaston. As a kid, I probably sang Gaston the most, which my family would likely happily verify that fact. You could have knocked me over with a feather when you said that The Mob Song was your favorite. I heard you say that, and I quoted Palpatine, saying, “A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.” Your statement on The Mob Song being catchy as hell, of course it is, it’s a villain song. The villain songs are always the catchiest songs, which is why they’re always the best songs. Belle is in my top three Disney princesses. The Beast, likewise, is for me at least at or around top five male leads/ princes in Disney films. Concerning your opinion of the Beast, don’t sweat it, Jess. You did not piss me off with your opinion of the Beast, primarily because you stated that you still appreciate the overall messages and the concept of the romance, even though you’re not fond of the romance itself, and you were honest about how you feel. Your criticisms of the character are valid, and I thoroughly enjoyed your taking him to task for his unpleasantness. At one point, I even said, “Goddamn, Jess is ruthless in her opinion of the Beast! I am LOVING this!” I’m such a broken record with this, but again the villains are my favorite characters, both in the original animated film and this newer version. I quite enjoyed Luke Evans and Josh Gad as Gaston and LeFou. I remember being worried about the casting for Lumière, Cogsworth, and Mrs. Potts because for my money, Jerry Orbach, David Ogden Stiers, and Angela Lansbury were some of the most perfect castings in Disney. To then learn that Ewan McGregor, Sir Ian McKellen, and Emma Thompson were cast made me happy knowing the characters were in good hands, and all three were great. Kevin Kline was terrific as he always is as Maurice. Also loved Audra McDonald and Stanley Tucci’s performances. I had forgotten that Gugu Mbatha-Raw was Babette. The look on your face when you heard the name change was priceless. Primary criticism I have is about the book, and I'll leave it at that as I don’t want to go on a tangent. I share your quibble about the singing, especially the singing for Gaston as I’m too fond of and used to that great bass voice that Richard E. White had in the film, as well as the talented actors in the Boadway musical. I’m a sucker for a phenomenal bass singing voice. And yes, comparing any singing to the legendary Angela is unfair; you are correct on that. You mention about the Enchantress at the end, it is a good question. Revisiting this film, I think overall it feels like how you said it met expectations. I knew there wasn’t any chance it would be superior to the original, so I went in with the thought of so long as it’s relatively enjoyable, I should like this well enough. Sorry that the technical difficulties persist, particularly after the nightmare that was the technical difficulties that you had in you Hamilton reaction. All in all, this was another most enjoyable reaction to the live-action Disney films, and again I am finding it to be such a joy sharing these films with you, Jess.

The really weird part is casting Audra MacDonald, one of the greatest singers of our time, as someone who spends most of the movie asleep. I got so pissed off when Emma Thompson stole her rendition of the title song at the end.

Thomas Corp

I mean, I was just happy that Audra was in the movie, but yes, it is a rather jarring irony in the casting her as a character that sleeps a fair amount, I agree.
