What an interesting take on an Alien film. In the end I wasn't rooting for who I thought I'd be, but I would definitely watch more of this story. Thanks Holly for this selection!

This is one of those movies where public opinion has been very up and down ever since it came out, and a big part of that is Neil Blomkamp’s later career path. When the movie was released, he was hailed as a great new original voice with his ability to use science fiction as a hard-hitting allegory for real world social issues, but then his subsequent films Elysium and Chappie left the impression that this kind of allegory was the only trick he knew, which drew more attention to how heavy-handed and even illogical it could be, like how District 9 requires us to believe the entire rest of the world would be perfectly fine with the South African government taking sole custody of our first alien visitors and throwing them in a dirty slum. Maybe things could have gone better for him if the entries in the Alien and Halo franchises he was attached to hadn’t dried up, but as it is, his new film Gran Turismo has been getting roundly mocked and panned sight unseen, and he really didn’t help himself with an interview just this week where he came off as bizarrely combative despite the journalist’s best efforts and the magazine being among the few who gave Chappie a good review. I should note after all this that I do really like the movie, though I was pretty confused in the theater about how it sets up a neat documentary setup and then just abandons it after a half hour. Even with that hiccup it’s a very involving story with truly detestable villains who you can’t wait to see get theirs, and it definitely doesn’t disappoint on that score. Despite Blomkamp having long missed the promised three years where a sequel was clearly being set up, I continue to hope he’ll get around to it.

I think I can see either side with the choices in this film wrt logic. On one hand…aliens, first contact, holy hell. But on the side of the political metaphor the South African apartheid was definitely an event/experience that was in itself heavy handed and very direct and a thing that it took longer than would seem reasonable for countries to respond to appropriately, so I can understand what Neil is doing with that side of things. Agree though that it has been a while since I’ve heard much good from him for his films unfortunately

Despite its unrealistic elements, overall I think this is a great movie. All scifi, no matter how realistic or grounded they try to make it, requires some degree of willing suspension of disbelief. Because I knew you had previously mentioned wanting to see this movie, I was happy to pick it for you. I hope that they do get around to making the sequel, even thought the director has been saying 'it's definitely going to happen' practically since this movie came out.

I have read that there’s some forward motion, but I don’t know if that’s a result of the directors statements or a fact. Either way, thanks for picking it!
