An unexpected death creates a fresh opportunity to examine the criminal element amongst the colonies. Not your typical BSG fare, but it definitely still had a lot to think about.

Ever wondered what it would look like if a TV show went out of its way to keep a new character alive, then immediately realized they didn't have any actual idea what to do with him, so they quickly threw an episode together for the sole purpose of killing him off? I mean, if the answer's yes then you're a pretty weird person, but here it is anyway. This is popularly considered the show's single worst episode (something I don't agree with, but we'll get to that), and Ron Moore himself quickly agreed that it was a low point. About the only thing it really has going for it is Bill Duke being his usual great intimidating self, and otherwise we're left with an obvious retcon to Lee's past to no real purpose, and his taking the whole episode to come up with the obvious solution of just shooting the guy. The crew's whole attitude toward the episode is best summed up by its ending with an utter non-sequitor shot of Zarek wandering around, like they just needed to fill a few seconds and no one cared how.

Yea, I was so surprised they killed him off like that! I enjoyed the episode fine, but in hindsight I felt the way they vaguely introduced Apollo's backstory with the girl feel so random this far into the series.

Introducing this part of Apollo's backstory is so completely random, I agree. Also, something my friends and I have laughed a ton over is the fact that they introduced the idea that there is somehow a MASSIVE market for buying children among the 49000 remaining members of the human race. I mean, Shevon's daughter was sold within a day LOL. Really makes you think about Sharon's comment that maybe the human race doesn't deserve to survive... I told my friends on their first watch through that they shouldn't consider this episode "real" beyond the explanation of Fisk's death. It's so outlandish compared to the rest of the show.

I didn't even really think about the numbers. That's so true. If there's that much demand for kids then we have a real human problem.

" This is popularly considered the show's single worst episode (something I don't agree with, but we'll get to that)," -- I also don't agree and will be curious to find out when we get to yours. (Not that I don't think this episode is bad, it's just not my personal worst.)
