I truly had no knowledge of this film going in, but there were still some expectations automatically associated with it being a Harrison Ford thriller. I could have NEVER expected this. Fascinating film, that while I didn't completely connect with every part of the story, I'm glad I watched.

This is a hugely nostalgic movie for me as it was one of my mother’s favorites while I was growing up and I’ve seen it many, many times. I personally love the ending because it is very realistic. If this were made today Samuel would have gotten Book’s gun and shot the bad guys in a big climactic ending, which would be completely antithetical to the belief system that had been built up throughout the entire second act. I actually saw a younger reactor predict just that when Eli makes the bell-ringing gesture to Samuel. This movie works because, in the end, everyone goes back to what they know to be true for themselves and don’t let themselves get caught up in a fantasy “happily ever after” ending. I also believe that after seeing the grim reality of John’s life she is brought back down to earth and knows she has to do what is best for her son and maintain his peaceful, safe life. As you can see, I have lots of thoughts about this one, lol. If you go back and pay attention to the other beardless Amish men you’ll see a baby Aragorn, Virgo Mortensen. He features in several scenes thought the movie.

That's exactly it! While I would have likely connected more had the film focused more on Samuel, I wouldn't have wanted an ending like that. I appreciate that the movie came and went without anyone fully going against what they believe is right. It makes sense.

Stupid, fun, joke-band that I loved growing up: The Electric Amish. They're very cute: https://youtu.be/ZiXZqRPfbEc
