This one has unfortunately been overshadowed by winning the Best Picture Oscar over Do the Right Thing, which many saw as a deliberate choosing of a safe, comforting movie about racial issues rather than Spike Lee’s angry, hard-hitting one. And it really didn’t help when history repeated itself just a few years ago with Green Book winning over Blackkklansman. At this point it’s basically impossible to find someone who can just consider the movie on its own merits.

Very true. I remember some ugliness over the Moonlight campaign as well -- I want to source this because I so clearly remember reading it, but I can't find it. People were talking about La La Land vs Moonlight well before the whole snafu at the ceremony, and some producer *literally* said "We gave them 12 Years A Slave; what more do they want?" So much in three words: We *gave* THEM. Mainstream Hollywood has a huge racism problem (along with all of their other problems).

Wild. I can't fully form an opinion as I've only seen Driving Miss Daisy from the bunch, and I obviously loved it. However, I have no reason to doubt the two of you and that quote Charity is absolutely appalling.

It's even caused Miss Daisy to be remembered as being much more about racial conflict than it actually is, with the focus actually being on getting older.

This is absolutely true, racial inclusion in this film is the b plot and is woven in subtly involving both African American and Jewish prejudice. It's meant to enhance the character's story, not be the story.

I didn’t know about the issue mentioned above with this movie, that is sad. For my family it has just always been a sweet, amusing, overall heartwarming film with the prejudice issues woven in as a smaller subplot the way you said. Also, when I was a teenager my older sister bestowed upon me the nickname Miss Daisy because while on a trip with her when we were going to pick up her friend, I just hopped in the back seat even though we had a little drive before actually getting to her friend’s place and she was like “are you seriously going to ride in the back seat while I drive up here…. Okay then ‘Miss Daisy’…”. And it has stuck since (often shortened now to just Daisy). Hahaha
